Divergent transpires in a futuristic Chicago where the society is divided into factions and isolated from the rest of the world. Beatrice Prior, who will later be known as Tris, is an intelligent sixteen-year-old who was ambivalent when she found out she was divergent and did not belong to one of the factions, rather she belonged to all five of them. Throughout the movie she displays strength, bravery, gratitude, love, and many more emotions. In this essay I argue that in the movie Divergent, individuals hold each other accountable to survive and if they do not they will become factionless. Every teenager in the future Chicago are given an aptitude test and are sent off to live in one of the five factions which include: Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, Candor, or Dauntless. Abnegation are individuals who are selfless, wear grey clothing, and live in little grey homes. Amity include peaceful people as they are the peacekeepers of the land …show more content…
The opening scene of the movie displays a massive expanse of grassland located outside of the city and then the towering fence that was never portrayed in the movie whether it was defending the factions or keeping them confined. Chicago displayed in the future, has worn down buildings that are vacated and shown in most scenes of the movie. One specific scene that was picturesque was the scene where Tris and Four (Tobias), who is a trainer of Dauntless, very serious, brave, as well as he becomes Tris’s love interest throughout the movie, and the scene was when they were climbing the ladder of the ferris wheel and once they got to the top, they could overlook the whole city. When Dauntless had to go in the heart of Chicago they would always pass the factionless individuals; when they trained or did anything with their new faction, if they did not try their best or did not make the cut, they were sent straight to
A survivor is someone who remains alive while others have died during a time of disaster. The most vital attributes a survivor must uphold are humility and independence. A survivor should be able to uphold the trait of humility in a time of crisis. In the article, “Miraculous Survivors: Why they live while others die” about many people who exemplify attributes of a survivor, J. Blake states, “They survive because they are humble… They know when to rest, when they shouldn’t try something beyond their capabilities”( Blake, 19).
Divergent was officially released in October 2013- as well as the other books. The plot is about a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice in which the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago- where Veronica currently lives- that is separated into 5 groups called factions ( Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, Candor, and Dauntless). Tris is Abnegation-born but takes an aptitude test where she chooses to become Dauntless. Because she is Divergent (consisting of Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite), she must keep it a secret from her Dauntless leaders to protect herself from being hunted down...to her death. Between the pages, she begins to explore her true identity within a society that defines its citizens by social and personality. It also contains a romantic subplot between herself and
Imagine having your personality given to you the minute that you are born. Factions; a way to separate people into groups by an outcome of a test. In this Utopia, your faith and future is already determined. Where perfection is ideal. Divergent by Veronica Roth is an exciting science fiction and thriller with a quickly moving plot that builds an exciting tone, and a point of view that is told through Tris in a unique way since she is like no one else in the story.
The lack of full emotional development of adolescents can lead to confusion and pressure while making life-or-death decisions during serious situations such as war. Along with being forced into war, living in inferiority to an overpowering presence only enrages the teenagers and their families more about the situation. Suzanne Collins depicts this class difference by writing, “Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch- this is the Capitol’s way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy. How little chance we would stand at surviving another rebellion” (18). The districts are outraged by the idea of forcing children into a violent atmosphere in which they have to fight each other for their lives.
Veronica Roth's dystopian book, “Divergent” takes place in Chicago. In Divergent there are 5 factions. Each human has to go through an aptitude test to see which faction they are most like. The main character Tris has many difficult choices to make in this book. One lesson the author teaches is choices can change your whole life.
Knowles’ moving novel, A Separate Peace, reveals many alarming features of adolescence, and human nature. Knowles shows that humans will naturally develop an enemy, and will fight them. The main character Gene develops a resentful hatred, which leads to his friend Finny’s untimely death. A liberal humanistic critique reveals that the novel has a self contained meaning, expresses the enhancement of life, and shows that human nature is unchanging.
Tris finds out about how Four only has four fears and that his aptitude test was for abnegation, but he chose dauntless as his faction. “He says, ‘I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your first instinct. I could belong in Abnegation just as easily” (Roth, pg.336). It illustrates that even though Tris is struggling with the identity of having or not having divergent in her life, it looks like Four is struggling with the exact same thing. The universal theme of when people are trying to find themselves, the best way to know who you are is to first know who you care about. This applies to everyone because many people are confused on where they belong or who they are, so they just need a little reminder. This situation relates to the universal theme because Tris and Four don’t know where they belong in and who they are as a person. The words “selflessness,” “bravery,” and “danger” has a positive connotation and implies that the author is trying to say that to find where you belong to is a hard thing to do and it might be difficult along the way, but at the end it's worth it because you find who you are.. When Tris was still figuring out who she is, with the help of Four she figured out that having many factions is ok and being divergent is unique. The universal theme clearly shows that when you are struggling to find yourself or where you belong in, it’s best to welcome people to help you figure it
Can one Choice define you? In Veronica Roth’s dystopian novel, Divergent, that is just one of the questions that will have you searching for answers. Roth will have you questioning your personal social role on society after you read her novel. The novel follows the point of view of the protagonist, tris Prior, who must decide on faction to join and pledge allegiance too for the rest of her life. There are five factions total. Read how the choice of allegiance, living with the choice, and the outcome of the choice all show key elements in social critic as Veronica Roth brings to life her dystopian novel The Divergent.
It is commonplace within films to replicate aspects of society like the formation of cliques, and/or groups that are subsets of the whole population. In these kinds of movies filmmakers indulge in the attributes of these subsection as well as the social orders, which facilitates them. Sociologists, like Norbert Elias, have theorized the creations and replication of social strata within Western society since before the 19th century. Norbert Elias’s infamous works theorized the creation of a unified social control within a civilization and the extrinsic influences of that control on the individuals themselves. An example of his key ideas are inherent in the movie “Divergent” where the presence of an embedded subset group “threatens” the social order and thus becomes a target for eradication.
Individuality is non existent factor in order to achieve an ideal society. The act of conceiving children has turned into a factory that produces human beings who are well conditioned physically and chemically and are given certain types of traits. Natural reproduction no longer exists and has been replaced by “conditioning centers” where they are dehumanized and robbed of all values where families, mothers, and fathers do not take any role in society. There is a caste system from Alpha being the highest and most intelligent. Beta who have enough intelligence to become a possible nurse or teacher. Gamma who are less respected because alcohol is being inserted into their growth chambers. Deltas which are soma production workers, and lastly, Epsilon who are almost completely moronic and illiterate. Each is set to a specific color of clothing along with a different role in society. Children are structured to be content with the lack of identity that is consumed stated by a civilian who said,” We don’t want to change. Every change is a menace to stability,” (Huxley 153). Lacking an identity causes problems with having close relationships with people, for the uniquenes...
...ms by which to live. An individual confronts many challenges in society, whether it be crime and punishment, struggle to grow, or other rapid modifications. Cry, The Beloved Country and Things Fall Apart exemplify how societies can be disrupted and how people react to interruptions to their traditional way of life. Some choose to adapt to society’s new ways, while others resist assimilating themselves with the innovative public. Societal change happens no matter where you are, however, how someone allows it to affect them remains determined by that person. Society maintains their own way of punishment, production of a particular type of person, and causes some to prevent from adapting to its evolving ways.
... authors conclude that it is through alienation within a small society that ultimately leads to the primary characters’ demise and death. Whether their individual cases are self imposed or externally imposed, the results and the impact are the same, annihilation of the human soul. Their craft make emphatic use of setting to the successful depiction of this theme. Both characters ultimately fall into the abyss of loneliness and despair proving that human existence cut-off and on its own is more destructive than positive . Thus their message seems to suggest that as humans, we need society in order to truly belong and have a connection, purpose and worth in this life, in order to truly live.
In mirroring the ills of the society, the view is to make the society realize its mistakes and make amends. Good values are set out for others to emulate. As an imitation of human actions, literature presents an image of what people do, think and do in the society. Looking at each of the pieces selected for this exercise, Ordinary People is a heart wrenching story of an ordinary family in grief and evidence of self-destruction. Judith Guest takes us through the path of death, alienation of affection and attempted suicide that threaten the existence of the ordinary people.
Divergent is set in a futuristic Chicago were everyone is separated into 5 sections of Chicago. Throughout the story the characters take trips to the Ferris Wheel of Navy Prier, the Hancock building, the Willis (formally Sears) Tower, and Millennium Park.
Veronica Roth’s Divergent book series was a monumental hit for teenaged and young adult audiences across the nation, and the development of the film adaptation for the book followed soon after. The story revolves around Beatrice Prior, a teenaged girl who lives in a futuristic version of Chicago. In her society, there are five main groups, or factions, in which a person must fit into. When the person reaches a certain age, they must choose and commit to one of these groups for the rest of their lives. However, if someone happens to fit into more than one of these societal groups, they are considered Divergent.
