Veronica Roth’s Divergent book series was a monumental hit for teenaged and young adult audiences across the nation, and the development of the film adaptation for the book followed soon after. The story revolves around Beatrice Prior, a teenaged girl who lives in a futuristic version of Chicago. In her society, there are five main groups, or factions, in which a person must fit into. When the person reaches a certain age, they must choose and commit to one of these groups for the rest of their lives. However, if someone happens to fit into more than one of these societal groups, they are considered Divergent. Beatrice discovers that she is Divergent, but it is essentially dangerous for her because the government finds the Divergent population …show more content…
Although the essence of the story is still encapsulated in both mediums, the notable distinctions of the characterization and setting choices seen in the movie caused the audiences to interpret the piece differently than the book-readers did.

The main characters of Divergent were bound to be changed slightly to fit better into the movie’s portrayal of the story. Some of these changes, however, had effects on the story that caused a bit of stir in the audience afterwards. A significant change occurred in the way Peter, the antagonist, was depicted in the movie. In the book version, Peter was a ruthless character who was willing to do anything to stay in his faction. When it was revealed that only the top ten initiates would stay in the faction, he made it clear that he wanted to be on the top of that list. For instance, on the night the ranks were revealed and Peter was placed second, Beatrice described the cruel event, “Edward lies on the floor next to his bed, clutching at his face. Surrounding his head is a halo of blood, and

In the movie, it shows that Beatrice only got the Abnegation tattoo, but not the Dauntless one. Beatrice, from the start, knew that she never belonged to just one faction. Getting the one tattoo of her birth-faction not only destroys the symbolism the book provides, but it also shows the audience that Beatrice will always be loyal to her birth-faction, even though she is the member of Dauntless. Instead of feeling that Beatrice is truly accepting herself as a Divergent, the movie makes the actions of getting those tattoos meaningless. Perhaps, it was the filmmaker's way of focusing more so on the ongoing battle occurring within their society rather than the theme of individuality and conforming to one’s
The characters make a big difference in the movie and the book. One thing they both have in common is that Otis Amber and Berthe Erica Crow get married. And that Edgar Jennings Plum and Angela Wexler get engaged instead of Doctor Denton Deere. Also Jake Wexler is a gambler instead of being a bookie.
There are many differences in the movie that were not in the book. In the movie there is a new character in the movie that was not in the book. This character was David Isay.
While watching the movie, I could see that the main characters in the book, both their names and traits, were the same in both the movie and book. However, aside from that there were many different as...
In conclusion, details involving the characters and symbolic meanings to objects are the factors that make the novel better than the movie. Leaving out aspects of the novel limits the viewer’s appreciation for the story. One may favor the film over the novel or vice versa, but that person will not overlook the intense work that went into the making of both. The film and novel have their similarities and differences, but both effectively communicate their meaning to the public.
Usually movies try to take the story to a different level or by adding parts or just try to change it to a completely different story. Some of the differences between the movie as to the book are some little and large differences. They might also try taking little parts away that will change how the readers see the story characters. An example of that would be Walter not smoking in the movie (Pg 115). Walter usually smokes because he is stressed or just as a way to relax. Walter also does not get punched by Mam...
Divergent was officially released in October 2013- as well as the other books. The plot is about a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice in which the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago- where Veronica currently lives- that is separated into 5 groups called factions ( Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, Candor, and Dauntless). Tris is Abnegation-born but takes an aptitude test where she chooses to become Dauntless. Because she is Divergent (consisting of Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite), she must keep it a secret from her Dauntless leaders to protect herself from being hunted down...to her death. Between the pages, she begins to explore her true identity within a society that defines its citizens by social and personality. It also contains a romantic subplot between herself and
Imagine having your personality given to you the minute that you are born. Factions; a way to separate people into groups by an outcome of a test. In this Utopia, your faith and future is already determined. Where perfection is ideal. Divergent by Veronica Roth is an exciting science fiction and thriller with a quickly moving plot that builds an exciting tone, and a point of view that is told through Tris in a unique way since she is like no one else in the story.
I have only included what I have to believe are largely important plot gaps and differences in the movie version in comparison to the book one, and so I apologize again if I have missed any other major ones. Forgive me, please.
Have you ever pictured yourself being divergent? Do you even know what being Divergent is? Picture it like it's a good thing, but there are people trying to kill you just because you are unique and normal. In a Veronica Roth novel Divergent, Beatrice (Tris) battles an internal conflict of trying to find who she really is. Tris ultimately resolves this conflict by facing her fears in the fear landscape; however, this choice also illustrates her true character as both fearful and fearless. Tris’s decision to fight the war also reveals the universal theme that when people are trying to find themselves, the best way to know who you are is to first know who you love or who you care about.
In Divergent Beatrice is an outcast along with many others for something they cannot control. If we put this in school terms, people who might dress funny, Divergence, get bullied by the cool kids, Erudite. Although the Divergence are portrayed as the unacceptable people, they can also be portrayed as the only acceptable people in society. You point of view can change the way you see
At this point, the readers create their own movie in a way. They will determine important aspects of how the character speaks, looks like, and reacts. Whereas, in the movie, the reader has no choice but to follow the plot laid out in front of them. No longer can they picture the characters in their own way or come up with their different portrayals. The fate of the story, while still unpredictable, was highly influenced by the way the characters looked, spoke, and presented themselves on screen.
Beatrice and Hero are both wonderful and intriguing characters. They develop in interesting ways and they represent two extremely different views of society and what it was like to be a woman in those patriarchal times.
There is a central government that is in control of all these people who are separated into different groups. This same government can do whatever it pleases and the people have no say in what the government can and cannot do. In Divergent, the Government tries to use mind control to get its army to kill innocent people. It was up to people like Tris to stop the government from continuing to carry out the meticulous plan.

She then sentences Tris to death and Tobias is sent to the control room to view the attack. Tris is locked inside a glass tank that fills with water, but moments later her mother saves her life. ...
The divergent film series evolved from the book series of the same name written by Veronica Roth. The series centers around a sixteen-year-old girl, Beatrice, that lives in a dystopian society which has been divided into five factions based on their core Values. The five factions include Amity, values harmony, kindness, and taking care of the land; Candor, values honesty and order; Erudite, values knowledge and logic; Abnegation, values selflessness, and generosity; and Dauntless, values bravery and freedom. Each faction has a unique social role in society, for example, Abnegation controls the government while Dauntless acts as the protectors of the society. The factions were believed to have been created as an attempt to maintain harmony
