Veronica Roth's dystopian book, “Divergent” takes place in Chicago. In Divergent there are 5 factions. Each human has to go through an aptitude test to see which faction they are most like. The main character Tris has many difficult choices to make in this book. One lesson the author teaches is choices can change your whole life.
In the beginning of the book Tris has to make a very tough choice of which faction to go to. She has a very hard choice because her aptitude test results did not tell her just one faction she is most like. This choice can affect her life. This commonly happens where characters want to help others, but they are afraid to. They make a choice not to help others because they are afraid to be penalized. An example of this is when Christina was fighting she was done, she didn’t want to fight anymore. Eric one of the head leaders put Christina off of the edge of a bridge, she had to hold on to it until he said she could stop. This is what Tris said “If I help her, Eric would make my fate the same as hers. Will I let her fall to her death, or will I resign myself to being factionless? What's worse: to be idle while someone dies, or to be exiled and empty-handed?” This goes along with the theme choices can change your whole life, because if she goes to help Christina Eric will do the same to her and this could risk her life. When Tris took her aptitude test she got multiple results which means she is Divergent. Since she is Divergent her life is highly dangerous. If anyone finds out they will kill her. She was told not to tell anyone, but someone very important to her asks her what her test results were. Roth writes “ This is my mother. I can trust her. “They were inconclusive.” I say softly” Tris knows that by making this choice by telling her mom can put her life at risk, but she trusts her mom. Roth uses this short sentence to show how important this part of the book is. She doesn’t need to use a long sentence to show …show more content…

It you are Divergent the serum doesn’t work on you. Tris has to be very careful to act just like the others so no dauntless trainer notices. All of the dauntless initiates are made to kill the Abnegation. Abnegation is Tris’s born faction. She has trouble making the choice to shot them. One of Tris’s biggest fears is killing her family; Abnegation. This is showed in the book as “I can’t wage wage war against Abnegation, against my family. I would rather die. My fear landscape proved that. My list of options narrows, and I see the path I must take. I will pretend long enough to get the Abnegation sector of the city. I will save my family. And whatever happens after that doesn’t matter.” The author wrote this part to show that Tris truly cares about her family. She will do whatever it takes to make sure her family is safe. An initie Will was running towards Tris with his gun pointed to her. Tris has to make a choice and she needs to make one fast. Victoria writes “In an instant, I see his finger poised over the trigger and hear the bullet slide into the chamber, and I fire. My eyes squeezed shut. Can’t breath.” This shows that Tris wasn’t sure what to do and her first move was to shot him. If she wouldn’t have made that decision then she would risk her life by Will killing her. Will was under the serum and was to kill anyone he saw or whoever he was directed to
