What is Diversity to you? I have asked this question and each answer is different from person to person. Most individuals convey the concept that is means “to be different” but to different degrees. Each response to the questions alludes that diversity is “Situation Related”. The is no clear definition of the word but there is an understand of what it can be depending upon the current environment. Diversity is a global phenomenon representing a variety of characteristics that exist amongst society. The concept can cover age, race, origin, religion, sexuality and ethnicity but there several other ways to look at diversity. Gardenswartz & Rowe referrers to diversity as an onion. What kind of work does the individual do, what is their position and their functionality? Association is a key factor, It’s not about the people but the organization that attributes to an organization’s diversity. The external aspect examines what an individual has decided to do in life. The individual has jurisdiction over their own characteristics. What are their personal choices, habits, education, work experience, how do they present themselves, marital status, environment or earnings. The internal is not choice and has no aspect of control. The characteristics that were ascribed to you once you are born; age, race, ethic, gender and any physical potentials. This is the most common concept of diversity. If you look at most written policies or procedures that are aimed at diversity they center around this idea. Personality is explained as an individual’s behavior. What manner does an individual behave given the situation? How well do the present themselves? How appropriate are their actions? The concept can create difficult, causing conflict depending on the person’s thinking. If just one person is not open to the idea of difference it can lead to constant misunderstandings and create a toxic environment. Given today’s society, diversity draws a fine line amongst individuals. The climate of today is far more advance when it comes to technology but not when it comes to human interaction. To understand others, it is important to see everyone as different. When tend to say, “treat others as you would want to be treated” referring to respect but different cultures see respect differently. We forgot not only are others different but we are different from others. When see ourselves as the norm and others as outsiders then give in to the belief that they need to conform to the norm. Is this a good idea? Is the “Norm” always the right thing or doing the right thing? America is one of the most diverse countries and going through this semester see how diverse the population verse how non-diverse the nation’s communication skills are. The United States is a hyper aggressive society and tend to communication in one way and if the other person does not get its their problem but is it just their problem? Mentioned before diversity is a benefit. Diversification adds advantages that other uniformed societies lack.
