Everyone has cheated before, whether it be on a test, on a significant other, or even cheated yourself out of an opportunity. Cheating in todays society is wrong, or at least that is what everyone wants you to believe. Societal norms don't really define any such act of cheating but the categories and severity of said cheating are definitely a subject of debate. Conscious decision making is required for one to cheat, disparity could play a role; however, in the end the individual cheating has a choice, and morals will decide your eventual fate. Today I will recount a time in which I used cheating as a tool to gain success for something I could not succeed in, and paid a significant price for my actions. Head hits the pillow hard, it’s the night …show more content…
Pulling out my textbook and pen I frantically copied down as many facts and important dates as time allowed for. I then rushed back to class finding a seat in the back of the classroom, furthest away from the teacher. I already knew what I was going to do but how I was going to do it without getting caught was the question. I documented who was around me and made sure I would be in the clear. Josh, stays pretty much too himself. I talked to him one time about this game we both are fans of, but there was the time that I didn’t sit with him at lunch when he was all alone, could that be my downfall? Next up was Ashley, she was a popular teachers pet but didn’t seem to care enough about others to outright expose me for my heinous actions. Next was Bryce was a guy who I almost certainly knew cheated on every test, quiz, exam and even homework. He was reckless, so how could I be the one to get caught. Next up, was my direct neighbor who always had his headphones in, no matter what was happening he was always listening to music. This made it very hard for me to develop a solid friendship with him so I pinned him as the wildcard, he might rat me out, he might use my notes, I had no idea but all these variables had my heart racing as I waited for the teacher to prepare to hand out the
Luke had always been the one student to cheat. Each time he had homework, he depended on his friends to get it completed. Every time he had to take a test, his desk partner or cheat sheet was always by his side. His grades were then much higher than average, and people expected so much of him. He had cheated so much during high school that it had become his daily routine. On graduation day, Luke graduated with high honors. He was accepted into one of the best universities in the state. When applying, he was asked to sign an honor pledge so he was able to get into the school. When summer break was over, he packed his things and moved into his new dorm room at college. When his classes started, he got loads of homework. Luke was thankful to have most of his classes with his roommate, so that he was able to cheat off of him. Luke made it through most of the semester by cheating on each worksheet or paper that he had to complete. At the end of the semester, he had many tests that he had to do. Luke made cheat sheets that he planned on using during the tests, but each one was observed closely. He suddenly realized how difficult it was to complete each test when he knew none of the information. Each one he completed, he scored low on it, making his final grade much lower than people had expected him to get. On his final test, he understood none of the material, so he decided to take the risk and get his cheat sheet out when he thought that the college professor was not looking. Unfortunately for Luke, he was caught. He was asked to leave the classroom and later found out that he was kicked out of the class. People were surprised that Luke was caught cheating, because most had thought better of him. Luke made the poor decision to cheat on one test and was caught, getting him into trouble that he would remember for the rest of his life. Luke’s future could possibly be affected by his decision to cheat, and cheating is a decision that he would not choose to make again. Luke’s future needs to be sustainable, but will his future be sustained if he makes the poor decision to cheat?
Stanford University’s mechanical engineer David L. Jaffe and Professor Drew Nelson discovered that while about 20% of college students admitted to cheating in high school during the 1940s, today between 75 and 85 percent of college students surveyed each year reported having cheated in high school. (Jaffe, David L and Nelson, Professor Drew) Why do people cheat?
Everybody is tempted to cheat in everyday life, and many people do cheat. W.C. Fields, a famous American entertainer, once claimed that “a thing worth having,” and thus a thing worth working for, is also “a thing worth cheating for” (Levitt 18). People will always find a way to cheat for something if they want it enough. Cheating does not have to be what one might conventionally think of as cheating, it can involve any situation in which somebody bends or breaks the rules to gain a personal advantage. As Levitt explains it, cheating can be something as simple as taking a $1 bagel without paying for it (Levitt 36). Stealing something that barely has any monetary value is still bending the rule to gain an advantage, no matter how small it is. A Stanford statistician’s research suggests that people “understand that cheating is wrong” but still cheat anyways” (Isakov 1). People know that cheating is considered morally wrong, but many still do it. This is because morality “represents an ideal world,” but it does not represent how “the actual world works” (Levitt 132). Moral principles are just guidelines that people want to follow, but most people end up deviating from those core principles in their everyday lives. The result is a world in which people do not always follow the guiding moral principles they hold, and can thus be liable to
...t it is wrong. Cheating has its upsides and its downsides, but all really boils down to if students want to better themselves as a student by studying,, or just slide by with flying colors and cheat. So if you look at the question again, if we all cheat, who really does it the most?
So what does it mean exactly to cheat after researching this topic for four hours I found that, it means to go about an objective in a way unfair or untrustworthy. There are many ways for someone to cheat on a test or an assignment in a school for example if you brought on an answer sheet into an exam, that would be cheating. If you wrote a paper for a friend or if a friend wrote a paper for you and either of you turned in the paper the other one wrote, that would be cheating. Even if you submit a paper you already turned in to any class, that is also cheating. Those were three major examples of cheating there are also smaller ones like looking at someone else's paper during a test or working with another student on an assignment together without the teacher knowing.
"I’m preparing for the real world. Business is unethical. Cheating is just good training. I’ll be better able to handle what’s put at me when I get out." "‘Oh, it’ll only be this once’ or ‘Everyone else does it, so why shouldn’t I?’" Sly glances at a neighbor’s work, an open book on the lap, or even high-technology methods—the resources of the cheater are many and varied. Whatever the methods, there are many statements like those above to justify cheating. For example, in the United States, surveys show that more than half of all students cheat, or have cheated, during their school years.
Cheating is more of a last resort, and in some sense a coping mechanism used to deal with or alleviate those elements that can cause anxiety. We all have a guilty conscience and a moral compass that guides us. However, the fear of failure and pressure of success can drive us to do things that we fully comprehend is wrong. This is a major issue in academia. It is also the reason why we have things like academic integrity policies and the honor code which holds you accountable and makes not cheating more of a moral obligation.

First and foremost, the student is wrong in claiming that that the act of cheating is natural in his/her nature. Unlike animals, human beings follow reason in making their actions. Upon saying that its a natural disposition for him/her cheat when he/ she do not know the answer, he/ she is associating himself/herself with the lavish animal instinct.
Cheating is immoral and generally wrong in most cases. Almost everyone disapproves of the act. Many people do not tolerate cheating and manipulation. Cheating often comes with negative effects. Cheating is unacceptable and it is an unfair advantage to those who choose to cheat.
Cheating is never just or the right thing to do. Many people believe it is okay to cheat if it is for entertainment, but it is unfair to other people. Being a cheater does not benefit anyone in the long run. In today’s world cheating has become an everyday occurrence.
Imagine a world in which no one’s actions have consequences. A person can do absolutely anything in life to get ahead of one another with no repercussions whatsoever. Imagine how terrifying it would be knowing there were no moral guidelines to determine how to live life. Thankfully, that is not the world people live in. But that is how many cheaters view their actions, as having no ramifications.
The basic idea of cheating immediately brings you back to being a kid when you are told cheating is wrong. Weather your cheating to win a game or pass a test it has consequences. However the consequences of cheating may not always be clear or immediate. For many cheating of any form is seen as wrong. However cheating always seems to be a topic up for debate. For some cheating is accepted as natural. One defense we often hear is “everyone else is doing it”. While others claim regardless of the reason behind it, cheating is always wrong.
Are you a cheater? One of the biggest questions in life no matter what you do is that, is cheating wrong. Everyone has there on personal opinion about cheating but as for me I think cheating isn’t right because cheating is an unfair advantage. I came up with three main reasons why cheating is wrong. Cheating is wrong because it brings an unfair advantage, you will never be able to truly say you worked for it, and it’s not just wrong for school cheating is wrong on every level no matter what you do.
What is cheating? I found myself pondering over this question for a very long time. I tried looking around trying to find some answers. After a proverbial wild goose chase, amidst racing thoughts and imagined guilt trips, just as I was about to give up, a small but determined voice inside my head spoke up, and at that instant, I realized that I already knew what cheating was. All I had to do was to look deep inside myself and listen to that inner voice which stems from our conscience.
