9 out of 10 books banned are issued by parents who feel like they are in control. The book Animal Farm is a great example of a banned book that is very important to some aspects of history. Just like in Animal Farm other books are banned, we have the right to read what we want. Book banning doesn't mean that you are in control, in fact, it can sometimes only make it worse. Books are banned all the time for different reasons, but why we need to stop banning them is the purpose of this essay.
Animal Farm by George Orwell was banned by the Soviets because the book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution. Also “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”(Orwell, 78). Again this quote is very important to the book because it shows how they ended up going back to the same dictatorship the farmer showed in the beginning of the book Animal Farm. Furthermore, this quote means that the animals in Animal Farm weren’t in fact, equal but some were better than others. Also in this book, it represents many situations that led up to the Russian Revolution, and that's why it was banned. Readers have a right of press and speech, that goes along with what they want to read(Petrilli, Ken ).The first amendment states that we have the right to read or write what we please. Books need to have a maturity level rather than reading level in a library to help us figure out just what we are reading to help us understand why we have the right to read. “The first amendment states that we have the right to read or write what we please” (Petrilli, Ken ). Petrilli is defending our right to read through the first amendment, which basically says that banning books is unlawful. Ken and Petrilli have the right mindset to allowing us total “book freedom”.
