At a young age, I knew that I wanted to be a businesswoman. As I grew older and saw my parents struggling with their finances and it was clear to me that I want it to be a financial advisor. My dream is to gain enough knowledge to impact the lives of future civilians to reach their financial goals. Currently, I’m working toward my bachelor degree in finance and a minor on statistics. I plan to obtain my masters degree in finance not only to be better prepared but also to help individuals and businesses grow financially. I never thought that I would be able to have a GPA of 3.5. My first year in college I had to take a math remedial course and that brought my self-esteem down. Many times, I thought to myself that I was not college ready and I blamed it on the poor education I receive growing-up. At that time, I had too much on my plate I worked 40 hours a week, had honor courses, and had issues with math and grammar. To overcome these obstacles, I went to math and writing tutorials almost every day. In an average week, I spent 30 hours working on math and slept 3 to 4 hours a day. As a result, I passed my math remedial courses with an “A”. From this I learned if I put effort into it I can accomplish anything. This gave me the boost to continue in the Honors Program and honestly, I still go to tutorials for any course that I’m having trouble
If you do nothing, you change nothing. If selected as an honors student, I fully intend to draw on every opportunity available to me through the honors program such as study abroad, research, and internships. Having type one diabetes both motivates and fuels a passion to better communities I am involved with and work with dedication. I will contribute not only my time, but also my personal experiences and motivation to push for innovation and discovery in on-campus research in a variety of different research.
I, Hope Turnbull, am a Senior of Stockton High School in Stockton Kansas. My plans consist of attending North Central Kansas Technical College starting Fall 2016, where I want to begin my study of nursing. Due to me having all of my general education courses finished upon my college arrival, I have been accepted into the first year Nursing Program (LPN). I believe that I deserve this scholarship due to me excelling in my education at a very young age. My grades are earned as A’s and B’s in school.

When I hear the word college, I automatically think of books, education, and learning. When I reflect on the reasons why I go to college, the first thing that comes to mind is my mother. The more I think about it, the more I realize the reason why I attend college is to not only learn, but create a path to where I want to head in life. I attend college to seek the best path ahead and work hard in order to give back to the most ambitious woman I know, my mother.
The career I wish to pursue is that of a stockbroker. I am extremely interested in the trading of stocks and financial holdings so the career of a stockbroker just seems to fit in with my overall plan. Numbers have also always been a fascination of mine and the trends of the economy and long term financial outlooks have often interested me greatly. Stock broking is a risky business that one needs to be prepared for highs and lows if choosing to pursue. You must understand what a stockbroker truly does to even begin to follow this as a life long career.
When I was given the choice to any job that I want to do or research I choose a financial advisor. The reason that I choose a financial advisor is because it has always interested me. The reason that it interested me was because my dad has been a financial advisor for most of his life. This means I have a little better understanding of the job than the person next to me. From what I have heard from my dad it really makes me want to go into this same career. From the information that I know I like the job but, that’s why I did this research to learn more and see if the job would fit me as a person. I hope to find a job that will let me interact with people and not keep me at a desk all day.
Recently I have been thinking about many different career choices. However, one stands out above the rest. I would like to be a financial advisor for a company such as Edward Jones. I am interested in this field for quite a few reasons. I enjoy working with, talking to, and getting to know people on a more personal level. This job takes a lot of hard work and commitment, but it pays off. My Uncle Doug owns his own Edward Jones office in Maryland. I see how well he has done for himself with this career and all of the opportunities it provides. I chose to research this career because I am very interested in learning more about becoming a financial advisor and to see if this would be a career I would really enjoy.
The fourth section of this project provided insight into how realistic the idea of being a financial advisor was for me. To find out if this was a suitable job for me I conducted three interviews. I wanted different perspective and decided the first interviewee would be my Mother who knows my strengths and weaknesses. My second interview was with Victoria Travis, a fellow student who is an accounting major at USC and has shared a number of classes with me over the past two years. My last interviewee was Tara Kolsrud, my sister in-law, who is an esteemed accountant who double majored in accounting and finance at Arizona State University.

As a child, have you ever been asked what do you want to be when you grow up? When I was little, all I ever wanted to do was open up my own dance company. I chose to study Business Administration because I love the feeling of being an in professional and sophisticated manner. I really feel as though choosing the business field was the best option I ever made for myself because I’m getting the opportunity to show many people out there how professional I can be and also the skills I have as a person.
