In the next year I would like to attend college and within the next three years I would like to be done with my college classes and be an Registered Nurse (RN). After becoming a RN I have thought about going back to college and getting either a doctorate or take classes to become a surgical tech. I would like to start working in a hospital to get extra experience with the healthcare system and to also help further my education. Also, working in a hospital can help me figure out my area of interest. I have a couple ideas already, but the hands-on activity is what will help me decide at last. Although I am more likely to attend a community college than other students, scholarships are still important to me to help cover the cost of the classes

During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. I am now absolutely certain that I am meant to be a pediatric nurse. Cook Children’s is recognized as a Magnet-designated hospital and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the US. Being a Cook Children’s nurse resident would allow me to fulfill my passion and dream of pediatric nursing. Short term, I want to work in a medical facility, preferably a hospital or small clinic, in an administrative and/or clerical position. I would like to do this to gain experience on my resume since I have never worked in a medical field job before. After about five years, I will have my bachelor’s degree and want to be a department head in the hospital or managing a small medical office. My long term goal, after I go on to get my Master’s in Healthcare Administration, would be to open a small donation only clinic available to working parents who can’t afford healthcare insurance for their children. The staff would be made up of college interns who are in the pediatric or in another medical practicing major with a licensed medical doctor present overseeing the visit. This will help low income working parents to receive care for their child at an affordable rate. However, I know this would be difficult with Obamacare and its laws so hopefully by then, we will be rid of Obamacare. Another long term goal of mine is to manage a hospital or a public health facility. If I am unable to open my own business, I would like to oversee an entire hospital or manage public healthcare in the community I live.
