When I had first been introduced to this assignment of community service, I can honestly say that while I appreciated what it meant, I saw it as an extra burden. It is not that I didn’t want to do it, but instead that I had no time to do it. With my schedule, it is hard to get enough sleep, let alone a couple of hours of community service. To remedy this issue, I was determined to find a place I could do community service and truly enjoy what I was doing. This is why I decided to volunteer at the Ceres Library in their new children’s program. This program had just opened up in late July, so they needed volunteers to help get it going. Because Ceres is a town full of low-income families and underprivileged children, the program was aimed to help these kids. As a volunteer, I helped manage and run the crafts, played with the kids, and helped them with school related problems. Every Thursday, I would drive over and help the employees set up the craft’s table, or whatever …show more content…
Those Thursdays I volunteered were so much fun, and I looked forward to it every week. I became friends with the parents of the kids, and the kids themselves too. I loved helping create smiles on the kid’s faces whenever we had a Lego day, or when they made a holiday craft that involved candy. To help makes those kids have something to look forward to each week was worthwhile. I remember during one of the first times I volunteered, I was helping a little boy build a house out of Legos while his mom was checking out some books. The boy was so excited, and kept on saying how he had always wanted Legos for his own, but that Santa never got them for him. It broke my heart to know that the boy’s parents could not buy him the toy. However, it was rewarding to know that I helped this boy get to play with a toy he would not have had access to otherwise. After volunteering, I felt accomplished, since I was able to help people in less fortunate situations than my
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
On a cold and rainy day of October in 2013, my mom and I were on our way to shop for Halloween. On our way to the store, we saw this bitter, fragile, and brisk homeless man in front of the store. In the store my mom bought a new sweater and told me ,“Go outside and give that man this sweater.” When i gave him the sweater, my mom walked out and said “may god bless you.” This made me realize how nice and generous our parents are.
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
Community service hours are a significant issue to all students around the globe, as they are taking a substantial amount of time away from their lives scouring for some kind of work to do. This is especially a problem for those who do not live near any public organizations, and do not have the schedule to do any work for them. Most students go searching around their neighborhood asking if their neighbors have any work for them, which does not help anyone academically. Thus, most community service hours that are done don’t relate to their academic classes or technical area.
I started volunteering at the food bank and the soup kitchen in grade 9, with a nudge from my friend. During my time as a volunteer, I would ask for donations and collect any non-perishable food items. Later I would go to the Soup Kitchen, to help cook some of these items and serve them to those in need. My volunteering experience allowed me to experience the environment and face situations that I otherwise would not. It opened my eyes to the harsh reality and lifestyle that many individuals in our society face today. My time at the food bank and Soup Kitchen helped me understand the importance of giving, ...
There I was, standing in the midst of all my stuffed animals, and I thought to myself, why not donate several of these to the fire department for children who have lost every possession they own to fire? When I was six, my mom told my sister and me that we had too many stuffed animals, and that we had go give quite a few of them away. Right away, I thought about donating them to the fire department to give comfort to children who had lost their homes. Giving is an essential element of life, and to give beloved stuffed animals away is tough, but the reward is marvelous.
Community service is something that I have always engaged. In college, I worked with chemically dependent children as both a caretaker and a mentor. After I graduated, I taught at-risk children in a community youth outreach program. To remain involved and aware of the focus of my studies during my first year of law school, I volunteered at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center teaching youth their basic legal rights. Essentially, we strove to empower kids by providing practical information about the legal system and to help them develop more favora...
One way to ensure a civically engaged population is to nurture and promote amongst youth and teenagers the value of participating in one’s community, with the hope that involvement will continue into adulthood. Most school districts in Arizona do not require students to volunteer as a graduation requirement. Those that do, necessitate a number of hours to be completed and logged individually; for example, Deer Valley Unified School District in Maricopa County requires eight hours of volunteering during a student’s senior year. Of course any opportunity for one to help society should be applauded – however, this particular process negates cooperative long-term attachment to a beneficial project and does not incorporate knowledge learned in class, or apply meaning in a real-life context. The implementation of Service-learning programs into public school curriculum would uphold useful skills associated with community involvement and citizenship, as well as address problems in real settings rather than do repetitious tasks in seclusion.
The first time I started volunteering was last year and it changed my perspective towards a lot of things; from the way of looking at people to how my mind works. The impact it's had on my life has been immense and life changing. From there, I constantly tried getting myself involved in giving a hand and at the same time, to widen my knowledge.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have volunteered at the elementary school. It opened my eyes to a few of the problems in our communities. I was able to make others aware of those problems through volunteering and being proactive. I am going to continue with the program for as long as I am able to do so. If only we had millions of these programs across the globe, many other children would be able to benefit and develop the skills to succeed educationally.
Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
I want to share the experience that I got from reading to the little kids in Washington school. This had been my first time doing community service so I was a little nervous, I didn't think that the kids where going to like me. But when I go to the school and saw the lovable little kids I felt much better. When we got into little groups and started reading they started hugging me and reading along. They made me feel good and I was ready to come back next Thursday. This was the greatest experience that I had ever had, I felt like a teacher and it fells great to have those little kids liking you.
The most joyous season of the year in our house is Christmas. All the family gets together, gifts are exchanged and we give thanks for all that we have. This Christmas however, was one that I will never forget. If it weren't for the help of a stranger coming to my rescue, my holidays would have been ruined. He reminded me that a little kindness really does go along way.
The day we bought gifts for the children, I was on cloud nine. I felt wonderful and it came from helping that family. I am very fortunate to live the life I live, so I have loved giving back. As the years have gone on I have involved myself into more volunteer situations. I cannot seem to get enough.
These experiences have afforded me opportunities to demonstrate my gifts and talents that had previously gone undiscovered. Through different community service opportunities, I either learned something new about myself or I was reassured something. These qualities include that I am creative, reliable, open-minded, passionate, and an effective team player. Community service changed my life by developing my character through enhancing my transferable skills, which allowed me to see the world differently. Everyone, from all walks of life, needs to in some way, shape, or form give back to the community because it will not only benefit the less fortunate but it will benefit the volunteers as well. Additionally, I learned about the wide variety of resources available to help the community. There are so many resources out there that people are ignorant to like certain shelters and food banks. Ultimately, community service taught me the greatest gift I could ever receive, how to be
