There I was, standing in the midst of all my stuffed animals, and I thought to myself, why not donate several of these to the fire department for children who have lost every possession they own to fire? When I was six, my mom told my sister and me that we had too many stuffed animals, and that we had go give quite a few of them away. Right away, I thought about donating them to the fire department to give comfort to children who had lost their homes. Giving is an essential element of life, and to give beloved stuffed animals away is tough, but the reward is marvelous. Not only is giving hard, but so is picking out the animals to donate. One of the animals that I gave away had been a favorite of mine. I think it was probably a teddy bear, and …show more content…
We talked with various firemen, and they were overjoyed about our donation of roughly forty stuffed animals. On of the men from our church is a volunteer firefighter, and he led me over to the place where I was to place my animals. When it was time for me to give my favorite animal away, I kissed it and said a prayer for the lucky child who would receive my beloved animal. I placed it in the cubbyhole with the others in the truck and felt that I had accomplished something …show more content…
I cannot remember if they asked me anything. It was so exciting to have my newspaper debt. Then after I was finished putting my animals into the fire truck, the firemen surprised me by taking me for a ride in that massive, red fire truck entirely by myself. On my little ride, we went past my grandparents' large farm, and the driver honked, and may have even sounded the blaring horn. I giggled because I thought it was funny that they honked. When we returned to the station, I sprang out of the truck and climbed into the car, and my family went home. I called my grandparents to see if they saw the fire truck drive past. I told them that I had been in there for a joy ride. It was a fabulous
However, I made the choice to collect donations for the League from the party-goers rather than increase the items with which I can let collect dust in my room until it the initiative is taken to give them to a child who, ultimately, will enjoy them more. From this experience, I realized the how infinitely more fulfilling and worthwhile giving to others is as opposed to augmenting a collection of things. The enrichment of dreaming about how many crystal-eyed kittens and wet-nosed dogs could be benefitted from the donations has proven to be more vividly memorable than any material gift or elaborate celebration.
During the summer or even on weekends my mom would take me with her to go help out her patients. Which included bathing them, feeding them, and caring for them. Not only did I help my mom with her patients but I would always help rake leaves, pick up trash and make their yard look nice. I can’t even image how they would’ve done all the things I did for them with their fragile bodies. I’m glad I was there for them and made a difference. Aside from helping my mom’s patients. I helped an elderly man who was on fire in his backyard. It was around spring time and I heard someone screaming yelling “help” so I went around to look and there he was on fire. I tried so hard to put out the fire and it felt like mission impossible but I did not give up even though the ambulance were on the way. He was burnt pretty bad, but I was so glad I found him. Who knows it could’ve been worse! He is still alive till this day and sits on his porch waiting for me to pass by his house every morning to say good morning. It’s such a wonderful feeling to know that I not only changed a life but I saved
I started volunteering at the food bank and the soup kitchen in grade 9, with a nudge from my friend. During my time as a volunteer, I would ask for donations and collect any non-perishable food items. Later I would go to the Soup Kitchen, to help cook some of these items and serve them to those in need. My volunteering experience allowed me to experience the environment and face situations that I otherwise would not. It opened my eyes to the harsh reality and lifestyle that many individuals in our society face today. My time at the food bank and Soup Kitchen helped me understand the importance of giving, ...
To quote Jeremy Bentham in his book An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation, in regard to the consciousness of animals, "The question is not, 'Can they reason? ' nor, 'Can they talk? ' but rather, 'Can they suffer? '. It is far too common for us as humans – the top of the food chain - to forget that we are not the only beings on the planet capable of thought. It is very simple to lump together all the creatures deemed as unintelligent or insentient together and basically de-animalize them – stripping them of their own evolutionary accomplishments and cognitive or mental development. With no empathy or deeper understanding of these beasts, we are free of any moral weights on our consciousness that may come from forcing them to live in humiliating and revolting conditions and are fed a chemical concoction of hormones and chemicals. This unfair and unjust treatment of animals has touched the hearts of many individuals across the globe, influencing them to take up a new diet that with it brings about a new lifestyle. Vegetarianism (or veganism, for those who are serious about
Animal imagery in Henrick Ibsen's play, A Doll's House is a critical part of the character development of Nora, the protagonist.
I grew up frequenting non profit organizations like Feed My Starving Children and local women’s shelters. I was very involved with my church and their youth programs and fundraising projects. The excitement and humility I felt after doing something selfless are feelings that stick with me today. I believe in random acts of kindness: you do something for somebody and you never tell anybody. It is one of the most humbling things you can do. And although I’ve never single-handedly organized and made
We, Aimee Johnson and Jessie Virnig, along with Amy Wilson and Shawn Klimek, decided to try to give the homeless a little hope. The week before Christmas we went door to door and collected food for the local homeless shelter. We decided to focus on collecting food because around the Christmas season, a lot of emphasis is put on toy drives and people sometimes overlook the fact that the homeless still need to eat. In order to broaden our research, we decided to collect food from more than one group of people. We went to an average middle class neighborhood and to a college dormitory. Before we went out into the neighborhood and dorms, we prepared a thank you letter to give to everyone explaining to them who we were, to tell them that we were collecting food for the homeles...
What is something that has sentimental value to you? No matter who you may be, we all probably have an item that has value in our personal opinion. We generally would prefer not to give it away or discard it due to our desire to cherish it, but we are often forced to depending on certain situations. Usually, this item is simply a stuffed animal, however, in my case, the item that had the most sentimental value to me was my pillow pet. For most kids, pillow pets or other stuffed animals have some sort of value or importance, and for this, it is significant to me due to the fact that I was given it on my birthday, along with it being a very unique animal that I genuinely love. To further expand on this statement, in addition to this I grew up
I give back to others and the community by being involved in a lot of different groups. Being involved with FFA we take time and do community projects that people ask us to do for them. We have put in concrete driveways and sidewalks for different people in the community and they always have great things to say about our work. Another thing I help with by being a part of FFA that has done for the community is that we have cleaned up the local park’s basketball/tennis court when it flooded and the court had a lot of mud, rocks, and sticks all over the court. One other thing we have done in FFA is varnish the cabins in the local park. Last year we also helped out with the new daycare they were setting up for the community, we helped build the parking lot and put the fence in around the daycare. Also, to help out the community our baseball team has helped out put up flags within the cemetery for memorial day. I have helped out with the community easter egg hunt by hiding eggs for the younger kids to go and find
The literary work, A Doll’s House, was written by Henrik Ibsen and has been a historical work of literature since the late 1800’s. There are many themes through out the story that impose the different ideals of the 1870’s. Many of the characters reflect the time period through the positions they hold, the activities they do, as well as how they behave and act. Torvald Helmer and his wife Nora traditionally represent the upper-middle class in the way they present themselves, what types of activities they engage in, as well as what they do as an everyday task.
As I waited outside my mother’s home on a chilly afternoon, I had seen a dog barking at an innocent white cat. Of course my mom lived in a neighborhood that was polluted with animals. Maybe, it was because she grew up on a farm with about five dogs so for her to see animals was a normal thing. Somehow, she was gifted to love and nurture. The vibe she gave was natural and impossible to miss.
Despite what many people might think, Animal Cruelty is a well-known topic across hundreds of areas all over the world. Animal Cruelty has been around for almost several centuries now and has an important meaning in the lives of many. It would probably be safe to assume that Animal Cruelty will most likely be around for quite a long time into the future as well as an enormous impact on the lives of many people as well. As for the United States of America, Animal Cruelty is a major growing problem. It is well known that nearly thousands of pets are euthanized or abused every year.
The most joyous season of the year in our house is Christmas. All the family gets together, gifts are exchanged and we give thanks for all that we have. This Christmas however, was one that I will never forget. If it weren't for the help of a stranger coming to my rescue, my holidays would have been ruined. He reminded me that a little kindness really does go along way.
I also had the privilege of helping with the Meals on Wheels non profit organization. My grandfather used to be a Meals on Wheels recipient and he would share with me how he enjoyed looking forward to their company and a hot meal daily. I volunteered because I wanted to give back and help someone else’s loved one in the same way. It was very rewarding delivering hot meals to people who didn’t have the means of getting one as well as being there for them to talk to. Overall, it was a very humbling experience, it made me realize just how blessed I am and how much I take for granted daily.
Death, abuse, confinement- three of the adjectives that can be used to accurately describe the lives of animals used in circuses. These animals range from domestic animals, such as dogs, to animals usually found in wild communities, including elephants and big cats. Despite the ease with which they seem to perform, circus animals are forced to learn and execute painful and confusing acts. Because of the inhumane conditions in which circus animals must live, animal-free circuses should receive more support than their animal-using-- more like animal-abusing-- counterparts.
