Checking out all of the ghost stories to read with my sisters during the summer was a must. Reading was so much fun and going to the library that was filled with dozens and dozens of books felt amazing. Sadly, as I got older the image I had of reading shattered. Uninteresting books that I did not understand were given to me. I started to hate reading. Neil Gaiman and Adam Alter are both advocates for the importance of reading. Both having experienced the benefits of reading, they explained their paths to why it is important. With that University of California, Riverside has implemented an English system according to the level that we place in. In doing this, UCR is putting students behind the four year plan. Graduating in four years is important …show more content…
It is a story about two completely different teenagers who, regardless of the obstacles that prevent them from being together, end up together. It is a classic love story that excites and gives pleasure while reading. Alter says how through reading we are able to gain knowledge and see things through a different view point. However, when I was a junior in high school I was taking AP Literature and instead of my teacher teaching us how to clearly read literature she gave us shakespeare's work and made us translate it for homework. I did not learn how to interpret what Shakespeare meant through reading and re-reading his work. A big part of our grade was to rewrite McBeth word by word. I had to buy a translator and still did not understand and gain more knowledge by just reading confusing literature. A lot of students experience symptoms such as stomach aching, light headedness, and trembling hands before taking a placement exam due to a lot of pressure knowing that a test will decide our placement class. I experienced those symptoms before taking my placement English exam. I freaked out and was placed in English 004. I had actually enjoyed writing in high school, but as the time kept ticking down I got more and more anxious and splattered words across the paper. Being placed in English 004 I am behind one
My parents have always stressed the importance of reading. Throughout my whole life, they have motivated me to read and they have encouraged me to find books that I find interesting to read. Because of their encouragement, I am an avid reader today. When I was a child, just starting to enjoy reading I liked to read books that were fiction. Some of my favorite books to read as a child are series that I still love today and I think I still have every book in each series stored in my attic. They are The Boxcar Children, Junie B. Jones, and The Magic Tree House.
Throughout the story, The author leads the reader through the different stages of a hidden love affair. Like in every love story the romance starts out being perfect, the best thing in the world, then it changes into something that the lovers are ashamed of. At the end one of the lovers becomes tired of waiting and leaves. The person left behind will be always hopeful that one day the loved one will come back.
It took me two viewings to start putting the pieces together. On the surface, it appears to be two twelve-year-olds forming a genuine friendship. But very subtly, the film brings about matters of homosexuality, pedophilia and necrophilia, all of which are taboos and harshly rejected by society. Though considered a romantic horror movie, I loved how it was really more “dark” than scary. The film appears simple, but imploring a “less is more” concept.
My pre-conceptions of reading at this point did not allow to me to distinguished the importance of reading support for college
...ng a life without each other and with that the conclude the book and end their family quarrels. A poignant ending for the young couple, but one that seemed fitting for their personalities. Through this we see the extent of the influence that their love had on couple as they follow each other to their deaths, refusing to live without each other.
My dad taught me that books could be my teachers, my mom taught me that our backyard could be my classroom, and my sister showed me that you could bring books into the swimming pool. I did not know it when I would spend hours in the pool reading a book that my parents weren’t encouraging it in vain, but my family life, for good reason, was centered on books. We were the planets orbiting around one sun that was the bookshelf. Little did I know that books would be the catalyst to academic success in my early life, and I owe it all to my family. Although a life with a book in your nose might seem boring, I was never bored. Living through the characters vicariously, I explored Narnia with Lucy, attended Hogwarts with Harry, and rode dragons with Eragon. Of course
As a child, I have always been fond of reading books. My mother would read to me every single night before I went to bed and sometimes throughout the day. It was the most exciting time of the day when she would open the cabinet, with what seemed to be hundreds of feet tall, of endless books to choose from. When she read to me, I wanted nothing more than to read just like her. Together, we worked on reading every chance we had. Eventually I got better at reading alone and could not put a book down. Instead of playing outside with my brothers during the Summer, I would stay inside in complete silence and just read. I remember going to the library with my mom on Saturdays, and staying the entire day. I looked forward to it each and every week.
No one could ever comprehend the hatred I had for reading- no one. Reading to me was just like being deathly ill, stuck inside, watching the neighbors play and know you couldn't join. On Monday morning I sat down in my teacher Mrs. Daniels class. I had a strange feeling reading would be an assignment coming up soon. I was dreading what I knew she was going to say next. “Class you will have 4 weeks to complete this book.” As I heard these words come out of her mouth I lowered myself into my seat like a turtle slowly going into its shell. I felt as if I was drowning and no one could save me until my life was over. Not only did I hate reading but I hated it even more when I was forced to. I thought in my head, “Why. Why make us read a dumb book that will do nothing but take away my social life.” Never did I know the book I was about to read would have such an impact
In Cynthia M. Leary’s article, “Why Reading Counts,” the author discusses reading problems in America. Once people leave school, many of them stop reading. In the article, Leary stresses the many excuses people use for not reading. First, people claim they don’t have the time to read. Second, others argue that reading is “too hard.” Finally, some believe that reading is a waste of time.
On the surface it’s a love story of long lost lovers. However if you look deeply into this novel you will see that everything mentioned above is true. You see good people made into great people and selfish people turn
I also remember as young girl learning how to read and my favorite book that I could quote word for word was “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr.Suess. I loved that book so much I still have that today. As I got older my love for reading and books started to diminish, I went to a private school for my elementary years and their curriculum was very intense. It was required to read a book from their approved list and complete a book report each summer before the school year began. Not to mention the numerous books reports I would have to complete during the school. At an early age books and reading was something I had to do and not what I wanted to do.
It is a love story of brothers who lived and died for a dream. It is a legacy love story. It is a love for family and community. It is a love of a God who so loved the world that he gave His Only Begotten Son; a love that two brothers lived and died for; still daring to
After reading the several articles included in this module and watched the videos, it really impacted me to learn about the high rate of children failing to read proficiently starting fourth grade. “Failure to read proficiently is linked to higher rates of school dropout, which suppresses individual earning potential as well as the nation’s competitive- ness and general productivity” (Early Warning).
Another argument is that books are only other people’s stories, or works of fiction. People may believe that there are other ways to success, more important than reading. When looking at the benefits that literature has to offer, these sorts of views are incorrect and ignorant. Reading is just as important to honors students’ academic careers, just like how writing and grammar are vital to understand. Without being able to read and comprehend, writing and grammar would be unnecessary. Literature about other people's’ stories is pertinent, because grammar and punctuation is incapable of teaching life skills such as coping and empathy. In response to the argument that reading is not as important as other ways to success, without reading science, mathematics, and history would be incomprehensible. Reading is the most vital key to success in a honors student’s
Research has shown that test anxiety currently exists for students in college. The education sector is one of the main areas faced with this problem. Students normally find it hard to cope with this kind of situation (Whipple, 1987). Test anxiety has caused fever in the education sector and people are struggling to make information understandable to students and learn how to manage it. Following the recent studies, test anxiety has been related to situations where students want to either sit for an examination or perform on stage, further test anxiety is common in places where one is supposed to perform and produce results (Watson and Driver, 1983).
