Though I thought I would eventually end up back in gymnastics class, all that changed, the moment I picked up a tennis racquet. Tennis seemed like a long shot to me, but I was prepared to give it all that I had. Trying my best was important when helping me reach my full potential. Being successful at tennis was going to be lots of work. If I had not pushed myself to try it out, I would never be at the skill level I am today.
All this started when I was eleven; the time I decided tennis was my new sport. Since I began, I have been practicing real hard. Last weekend I had my very first tournament. Although I enjoy it now, at the beginning, it made me afraid of being hit by the bright yellow ball that was rushing towards me. Fear appeared anytime
I am a runner. I was selected to be a cross country captain for my senior year and I had set myself a realistic goal of being one of the top five finishers at the state meet in the fall. I never had the thought that I could not do it; I knew I was going to be up there with the best. When the state meet came and I traveled with the team as captain, that race became one of the most memorable of my cross country career but not for the reasons I expected.
I became more dedicated and committed to the sport, Baseball. I never played any other sport, and I started progressively doing more baseball each year. I have tried extremely hard to keep playing baseball, because it will come to an end at some point, but hopefully in will be later in my life instead of sooner. I earned a spot on varsity. Being on varsity gave me my first taste of truly competitive tennis. Usually during practices, we would be separated from the other girls not on varsity, and our coach would run special drills with us. Tennis is an energy demanding sport. Matches usually started around 8, although sometimes I had to wake up at 4 because of a long drive, and depending on how many teams were at the tournament, could end late in the evening, one day we didn’t finish until around 9pm. By this time in my tennis career, I knew all the rules of tennis inside and out. I would frequently help the players on the team newer to the sport with scoring, knowing where to stand to serve, and what grips to hold their rackets in. When I was eleven years old I made a decision that changed my life forever. Ever since I was three years old I did gymnastics and I loved it. My dream was to become really good and win the olympics and become a world medalist. But this dream quickly was changed. After my eleventh birthday, I was starting to realize I didn 't want to do gymnastics anymore. I told my mom and she was heartbroken but let me do what I wanted, so I quit. Once I quit I decided I wanted to try something else, cheerleading. My mom was thrilled and found a allstar gym in sumner called React.. She emailed the coach but I already missed tryouts. The coach said I could come to practice and see if they needed me and if I would like it. I instantly fell in love and wanted to join. The coach liked me and loved that I could tumble. I made the team that night and my life hasn 't been the same since.
As a child I was not in to many sports or involved in school activities. Going through high school I figured out that being involved in a sport or a school club would make my high school experience better. The first and only sport I chose to do was track. Track changed my whole high school experience and life. I learned to never give up, and it kept me out of trouble throughout my four years of high school.
Naturally, I faced the competition of other gymnasts, however, meets were not where my most valuable lessons were learned. The impact was greater in times I wanted to quit, and didn’t. For instance, my flyway, a skill I acquired as a child, became impossible for me to execute as a teenager. Each time I attempted to perform it, I froze, fear lingering in my mind. Frustrated, I contemplated abandoning my passion, yet, due to my persistence, I overcame the obstacle. I found quitting would never provide me the satisfaction I hungered for. Gymnastics also challenged my body. I suffered more injuries than the average gymnast with broken feet, fingers, toes, and elbows, a concussion, and two stress fractures in two years. My final injury, a torn labrum, resulted in hip surgery, six months of physical therapy, and the death of my college gymnastics dream. Through disaster emerged strength to cope with every roadblock I encounter. All of my life I had worked towards that goal, and with the lift of a scalpel, it was shattered. Thankfully, the qualities gymnastics has given me has transferred to every aspect of my life including my academic career. I have put in just as much effort in the classroom as I have in the

Of course I woke up to reality a few years later, when I proved that although I was a good player, I was a far cry from being a superstar. As a kid growing up I sparkled at the chance to shine in any sport. I particularly loved playing baseball and being known for making a great play of getting a big hit that turns the tides of the game. Every chance I would get to do something spectacular I would jump at the opportunity. I wanted so badly to be the one who was up to bat with two outs at the bottom of the last inning with winning runners on base. I seen those as golden opportunities and found them to be the most defining points of my baseball career growing up.
When surfing the Internet, eventually winding up at tennis4you.com, I found something called the “Lesson Lounge” which has instructional articles on the game of tennis. My particular article discusses a very crucial part of the game, and also a difficult one, the first serve. The reason this drew my attention is because this is a major weakness in my already pathetic tennis repertoire. By reading the article, I hoped to find strategy to learn from, and eventually, with practice, to improve from. In the article, they explain how the first serve can become “…someone’s biggest weapon making someone else’s worst nightmare!” That, not only can one use a power serve or a placement serve to attack their opponents, but that working out is not even necessary to do so. The tennis serve can have significantly more power by using “…legs, shoulder rotation, and stomach muscles…” during one’s motion. They stress that since you have two serves, it is crucial to take a chance and make sure your first serve is NOT “…easily attackable”. From here, they lead into more complicated serving techniques that involve the type of hit- such as the flat, slice, kick, and topspin serves. Although I am not good enough to test them out, through time, they could certainly help someone with an interest in tennis who is willing to practice. After establishing the four types, the writer goes more in depth to differences between power and non-power serves. With power serves, they emphasize the importance of rhythm, significance of keeping your opponent guessing and lastly, the need to hit it in bounds. They continue to say that, obviously, no matter how hard your serve is, it is useless if it cannot land in bounds. As far as non-power serves, they speak of smaller players and how technique and mechanisms such as spin. Another main point here is that one must serve deep into the service box.
A defining moment in my life was when I decided that I wanted to be an athletic trainer when I grow up. I knew I wanted to be athletic trainer because I want to stay in the athletic field once I finish my athletic career. For me there is no better job than one that I can interact with athletes on a daily basis and help them prevent injuries. Knowing my career path early helped me lay out my academic goals, this also brought up some challenges.

Tennis is an outdoor game played by two individuals or pairs of players on a clay or grass court that’s divided by a low net. Each game is played with tennis rackets and small, yellow elastic balls. Throughout my early childhood, I went through several different phases. I practiced an abundance of different activities such as: dance, baseball, tumbling, gymnastics, and even baton. However, none of these sports or hobbies stuck. That is, until I discovered volleyball. Never have I felt the love for something as much as I did this sport.
