Why GMO’s shouldn’t be in food. Food, everybody has to eat food. In this century there are millions of different foods that can be eaten. But sometimes while Americans indulge in the luxury options of foods, I wonder if they ever really pay attention to how bad many foods are for their bodies. I think everybody should turn to organic foods to help them live healthier lives. The reason that foods are so bad for the body to consume is because foods are packed with GMO’s. GMO’s are “genetically modified organisms” which are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses, or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur in nature, naturally (“GMO Facts,”2014). Cutting GMO’s out of your everyday diet can be extremely hard due to the fact that when you buy products that contain GMO you may not know because it doesn’t have to be labeled (“GMO Facts,” 2014). There is a non-GMO project that is working to make it to where products containing GMO’s must be labeled. But until the project is successful you have to really do your research on products that contain GMO (“GMO Facts,” 2014) one thing you can look for is the USDA certified organic seal because according to USDA regulations GMO’s are prohibited in organic agriculture. When grocery shopping you should and can ask questions about where the food in the store is coming from and how it’s made. GMO critics say that genetically engineering a food could affect its nutritional value or create toxins in the food (“Lee,” 2014). Genetically modified? That alone should be a cause for alarm, and have you wondering, what exactly is in this that I am eating? Yet every day millions of American’s choose to load up on food filled with GMO’s, and not even know it. First we must understand what GMO’s are. GMO’s are any organism whose genetics has been altered using genetic engineering. We should not be tampering with nature, and should try to grow organically as much as possible. There has not been enough research on GMO’s to know the potential long term effects it can have on us, so this is why GMO’s should be banned.
Food is an essential part of everyday life without it one could not survive. Every day we make choices on what we put in to our bodies. There are countless varieties of food to choose from to meet the diverse tastes of the increasing population. Almost all food requires a label explaining the ingredients and the nutritional value allowing consumers to make informed decisions on what they are consuming. However, many may not be considering where that food is coming from or how it has been produced. Unfortunately, there is more to food than meets the eye. Since 1992, “ the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled, based on woefully limited data, that genetically modified foods were ‘substantially equivalent’ to their non-GM counterparts” (Why to Support Labeling). GM food advocates have promised to create more nutritious food that will be able to grow in harsh climate conditions and eventually put an end to world hunger in anticipation of the growing population. There is very little evidence to support these claims and study after study has proven just the opposite. GM crops are not only unsafe to consume, but their growing practices are harmful to the environment, and multinational corporations are putting farmers out of business.
According to an article titled “Genetically Modified Foods Eaten” regularly by Linda A. Johnson today, essentially 40% of the foods we eat are genetically modified, unless you eat organic foods and/or you grow your own. Most products containing corn, soil, canola oil, or cottonseed oil contain genetic modification. One of the biggest genetic modification company is Monsanto (Johnson). She goes on to say many Americans don’t even know they are consuming genetically engineered foods. In “Genetically Modified Foods Confuse Consumers” by Mary Clare Jalonick writing in the Washington Times, has talked about how this is because the FDA does not require them to be labeled. Due to this labeling, there will be an exposure to which foods are natural because the foods that are the most appealing will have “the ‘Non-GMO Project Verified’ seal [in order] to help shoppers recognize which products meet rigorous GMO avoidance practices” (“Whole Foods Market”).

How many of you hear the words “genetically modified food” and immediately think “BAD”? How many of you scorn the idea that genetically modified foods are useful? How many of you have been manipulated by the media to think that all biotechnology is evil? Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms that have been genetically spliced to achieve a certain trait. As the demand for a larger food supply is increasing due to population growth, the benefits that GMO foods provide are being hailed as the only solution to the food crisis. However, many people are making inadequately informed decisions, and are pushing them to the back shelf. I will inform you on why genetically modified organisms may be the only way to a stable, safe future for the less fortunate.

The website that I choose that discusses genetically modified foods is the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT) and the article was titled 10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs (Smith, 2011). The IRT claims to be a world leader in educating the public and policy makers on genetically modified crops and foods. Furthermore, they claim to investigate their risks and impacts on health, agriculture, the environment, and the economy. The founder and primary contributor is Jeffrey Smith, an international bestselling author and a self-proclaimed GMO expert.

When people consume food, do they really ever ask themselves if what they are consuming is completely natural? Researchers have proven that many of the things Americans consume are genetically modified. A genetically modified organism, or GMO, is an organism that has had its DNA altered or modified in some way through genetic engineering. The beginning of this scientific inquiry, all began with the sale of “Flavr Savr”, an invention of former scientist Calgene. This invention was for delaying the food from going through its process and ripening. The main focus now is not to delay food from ripening, but to work on increasing the population on cash crops for such instance, soybean, corn, canola, and cotton seed oil, because of the high demand of these consumptions. In such cases there being seven main foods in today’s modern day being altered, going from most common to least common, starting with corn being almost 85 percent of it that is being cropped in the U.S. takes effect to this. Second is soy, this is the one that gets altered the most in this entire country. The third is yellow crookneck squash and zucchini, the number being altered is relatively small, but contain species such as protein genes that protect against viruses. The fourth is alfalfa, this consumption consist of a resistant to herbicide Roundup. The fifth is canola, 90 percent of these crops in the U.S. are modified. The second to last are sugar beets, they make up half of the U.S. sugar production, and 95 percent of sugar beets in the country.
