There has been many arguments about school with dress-code. People believe that the way someone dresses effects the students learning process. Schools say dress-code makes everything better when in reality it makes everything complicated. First of all, people get sent to the office just because something is wrong with their clothes. It shouldn't be a need to take a student out of class to the office so they can get a change of clothes. Getting sent for dress-code seems pretty odd because it interrupts the teachers time, which many teachers seam to say that they don't like interruptions. Also, it's not good for the student because something important can be happening in the classroom that day and it's not going to get explained correctly to him all because of a set of clothes. Another reason, why dress-code should not be in school is most of the time it is hard to find specific things that are in dress-code. For example, making sure a shirt is two inches wide can be complicated, you can never know if it's two inches or not because we don't have a measuring tool when we shop and it shouldn't be necessary to have one or have that struggle of looking for a shirt that is in dress-code. Everyone has different styles and it shouldn't be wrong to dress how you want or would like to. Students can't wear their hair or clothes they want to because the dress-code says you can't but I don't see anything wrong with it. I think that we should not have a dress code, because it takes away students individuality, and it does not stop bullying what so ever, Also it is harder on parents with money to buy school clothing plus regular clothing for outside of schools . Ensuing President Bill Clinton's State of the Union address in January of 1996, more and more public schools are implementing dress codes and uniform policies in their schools. As a result, there has been an increase in legal controversies dealing with the issue. The reason that dress codes are not conclusively enforced is due to the application of the First Amendment to juveniles in the public school setting. The First Amendment states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Should children in public schools be able to wear whatever they want because of the freedoms classified in the First Amendment? I feel that the answer is no. Institutionalizing dress codes in public schools would do a great good for students and the entire academic community. I base my opinion on the fact that the pros of imposing dress codes outweigh the cons of the argument. By imposing dress codes or uniforms for students, it would eliminate opportunities for the ridicule of less popular or less fortunate students based on their attire, help prevent gang violence and gang members from wearing gang colors and insignia in schools, and generate an overall better academic concentration and discipline in the educational community.
Dress code is put into place to keep students from being bullied for how they dress and how some people may treat them different depending on what they wear. Wow, it is crazy how you can get dress coded for wearing jeans with holes in them even though when you wear shorts it shows more skin then when you wear jeans with holes in them. In fact it is weird that you can get dress coded for having holes in the pants that you wear. When I wear comfortable clothes it makes me happy and more relaxed for the day, and I don’t have to worry about if I like or other people like what I am wearing. For this reason, a dress code would promote fewer distractions for the students. Students typically act the way they are dressed as made evident by Mark Mathane, “frequently disrupted by other students ogling themselves in mirrors, painting their fingernails, combing their hair, shining their gigantic shoes, or comparing designer labels on jackets, caps, and jewelry” (p 204).
