Moderate exercise such as walking can lower mortality rates by 18 to 50 percent and prevent strokes, cancer, diabetes, and fractures (Simon). The potential health benefits from having longer passing times far outweigh the costs to implement this stage of the movement. Time for the longer passing times will be taken from each lunch time. Five minutes from the four lunch times will be given to the longer passing times. Every student can take advantage from the longer passing times in the form of moderate exercise benefits. These practices will be introduced by Mr. Chelf to ensure that teachers are successful in following through with them. Supplementary physical activity can be created during class time through workstations that require students to move around the classroom, outdoor labs, games, and utilizing the outdoor classroom. These different activities will allow students to gain the benefits from moderate exercise (Simon). This is because doing something, as little as walking or standing, is better than sitting around in class all day, which seems to be the norm at North High School. One teacher, Cindy Jones, went the extra mile to include learning and physical education in her classes. She teaches STEM subjects through the use of games, simple machines, and structures that allow the students to kinesthetically learn complex concepts. Jones even mentioned that students seem to learn and grasp the subjects better when the activities are hands-on
The book begins by explaining how important exercise and being active is to our health and well-being. The author then transitions into a story about Naperville Central High School. This high school was in the forefront of a revolutionary new concept that involved vigorous exercise of its students instead of a traditional gym class. This new approach stimulated new research on the brain, and the effects of exercise on the well being of our body and minds. After the introduction of the new fitness programs, the school’s students showed drastic increases in standardized tests, and on normal tests as well.
Finally, having longer passing periods would benefit our health. I have something called patellofemoral pain, so when I walk fast in the halls my knees start to hurt really bad. Also, when you’re rushing to get to your next class you can slam the locker door in a hurry and hurt someone. We never have enough time to go to the bathroom which can lead to health problems in the future. With the four minute passing period we don’t have time to socialize with friends which is important for your mental health. When you’re rushing down the hall you could fall and trip, hurting yourself or someone in the process. These are some of the reasons having a longer passing period would benefit our health.
Students who participate in sports remain physically active. Student athletes have practice and must keep “in shape” to compete against other high school teams. Researchers have said the younger population has grown obese. Students who remain in high school sports have a lower risk of becoming obese. Obesity is growing rapidly in the nation and having kids participate in sports will help the nation’s obesity rate decrease. The reason students stay healthy is because the practice may involve running, weight training, and flexibility to help stay in “shape”. Students involved in sports are also encouraged to eat better to ensure the best body to perform at top level. Athletes have a desire to win and be the best. Day after day, late students are punished or end up in detention due to short passing periods. Having short passing periods can make a student’s grade go down or worse when students are late to class. This can be prevented by extending passing periods to 10 minutes. Although the staff at H.P.M.S may disapprove, but in the long run, they will see the effects of having longer passing periods has on students. Because of the short time of passing periods, students at Happy Place Middle School are petitioning to extend their passing period time to 10 minutes. In short, some of the positive effects are that students can get to class on time, and gives students and teachers time to prepare.

Movement is one of the most highly debated topics among teachers today, as every individual has his/her own opinions in their teaching philosophy. Teachers must get around barriers caused by the high priorities of standardized testing and low effort to include movement in their classroom; therefore, it puts too much stress on the general education teachers. There are insufficient amounts of space to complete activities requiring movement when in a classroom; therefore, the teachers are incapable of safely navigating students around the room. Some students will refuse to participate in different physical activities, causing frustration when teachers are trying to plan full class activities, and this takes away from academic instruction. It is often that educators exclude these physical activities from the classroom due to stress that is put on the schools to perform higher academically; however, studies show exercise may be a large factor in the student’s performance. There are so many ways to incorporate movement into the lessons that increase the students’ academic achievements while motivating them. As space is limited in the classroom, during the warmer months, teachers can use the outdoors as an engaging experience to refresh the students’ minds and prepare them for new lessons. Physical activity enhances children’s quantitative development within middle childhood, supporting growth toward healthy strong people, physically and psychology. Middle childhood is documented as being between the ages of six to ten years old. A lack of physical activity affects children across all areas of development; it is not restricted within the domain of physical development. Discussed within are the expectations of motor development within middle childhood, the benefits of physical activity and the consequences of prolonged inactivity. Opposition of mandatory Physical Education in high schools believe that if a student has not developed a desire for voluntary physical exercise by the time he or she reaches high school , he or she may not ever (Eberhardt). Paul Eberhardt, athletic director, intramural director and head coach of the McNair Marlins basketball team in Richmond, B.C., believes “that students don’t care about participating in P.E. anymore and we have to educate students on the benefits of Physical Education”. In the 1994-1995 school year there were 1,133 students enrolled at McNair High School but there were only four P.E. classes available, which meant approximately 120 students attended in these classes. The remaining 1013 grade eleven and twelve students had no Physical Education at all. Opponents of physical education in schools state that gym is not the best way to utilize students’ time. Students’ should be given the choice to participate in gym class or not because many students aren’t as athletic and don’t enjoy it enough to want to do it in school. Despite this downfall, PE is important in students’ life and even though some don’t enjoy it as much, they need it in order to be successful in life.
