Longer Passing Periods
Have you ever wanted longer passing periods? Many schools have started to give 7-8 minute passing periods instead of 4 minutes. There are many reasons we should be given longer passing periods. We should have longer passing periods to benefit our teachers, students, and health.
First of all, having longer passing periods would help our teachers. Teachers are always in a rush to get stuff done for the next class. Sometimes when teachers have to go to the bathroom they don’t have enough time. When a teacher is absent another teacher has to check up on the sub to make sure they’re doing everything right. Then teachers have to give students make-up work. Teachers also have to answer any questions students might have. Teachers

Sometimes we forget something in our locker and we have to go back to our locker so we would end up being late. We also like to study for a test or quiz during passing period so, a few extra minutes would help a lot. I like to talk to my friends, that I don’t have classes with, during passing period and I never have time. I also never have enough time to go to the bathroom. Like teachers, students get stressed as well. These are a few reasons longer passing periods would benefit us students. Finally, having longer passing periods would benefit our health. I have something called patellofemoral pain, so when I walk fast in the halls my knees start to hurt really bad. Also, when you’re rushing to get to your next class you can slam the locker door in a hurry and hurt someone. We never have enough time to go to the bathroom which can lead to health problems in the future. With the four minute passing period we don’t have time to socialize with friends which is important for your mental health. When you’re rushing down the hall you could fall and trip, hurting yourself or someone in the process. These are some of the reasons having a longer passing period would benefit our health.
Our health, students, and teachers would benefit from longer passing periods. It would be very helpful to make passing periods longer. I think our school should be one of the first schools in Kansas to make passing periods
As I wearily sat in my seat, writing an essay on the importance of electricity in the modern world, I caught myself glancing repeatedly at the clock that was so carefully perched above the teacher’s desk. “Ten minutes, only ten more minutes left until school is over and I get to go home!” I told myself. In most schools, the average school day is about eight hours long. Eight hours of continuously sitting in a chair taking notes during lectures, doing classwork, projects, etc. During these eight hours of school, students deserve a short, outdoor break in which they can isolate themselves from the stress of working all day and just relax. Studies have shown that people who take short breaks throughout the day to do light, outdoor breaks are more productive than those who do not. A short, outdoor break will benefit students due to the fact that students will have time to relax; students will be able to focus more, concentrate, and be more productive; and teachers will have more time to prepare for the next class coming.
How beneficial would it be for students to have a free period during the school day? I will give you the reasons on to why I think students should have a free period during the school day. The reasons why we should have a free period include, having time to hang out with friends, time to get help from teachers with assignments, or catch some Z’s. One of the reasons students should have a free period is because it will allow them to relax, take a brain break, and hang out with friends. Students deserve to have this extra free time because school can be really stressful and having this free time in school to do whatever you want will help us to reset and recharge.
School days should be shorter fro students because they do not get enough sleep, have to much homework, and have barley have time to participate in extra curricular activities. A majority of students have sleep depravation due to school. If school would either start or end late students will have a greater opportunity to get more sleep. Teachers expect students to pay attention for 90 minutes while the night before they were up late finishing their homework for there classes. Some teachers do not realize that students have a life and work or have other obligations that take up a major portion of the students.
Students should be given the option to take accelerated classes because although they may show poor results, being challenged may trigger intelligence and more potential to continue on with accelerated classes. Along with given the option to take accelerated classes the educational system should also adjust in the way of providing courses to remain creativity alive within the student throughout their whole life, instead of blocking it out and keeping them focused on just the subjects of English and math.
Schools all over the country are considering, if not already applying, the removal of recess for elementary school students. Having recess has scientifically proven to play a substantial part in the social development of a child, their physical health, and the amount of attention they pay in the classroom. For example the Tennessee Board of Education says, "It is the position of the NASPE that all elementary school children should be provided with at least one daily period of recess of at least 20 minutes on length" (National Association for Sports and Physical Education). Keeping recess in schools could help lower the childhood obesity rate, help children to be more attentive in class, and assist in the development of their much needed social skills. These aspects are essential to academic healthiness and to your child succeeding academically. Removing recess could cause a dramatic decline in the graduation rate in the U.S.
... with Europe and Asia, the American Board of Education placed project schools around our nation to examine the effect of extended school hours. Extra hours, however, will not contribute to increasing test scores as well as other factors can. Instead, the government should provide our schools with more qualified teachers. Without professional teachers, extending the hours in class cannot possibly help US students.
There have been many studies on the link between recess and classroom success. Although aware of these proven studies, schools all over the world are still trying to squeeze recess out of a regular school day. Recess breaks maximize children’s performance and behavior in school. It allows them to take a break from learning, making them more focused afterwards. There is no way kids can stay focused for a whole day, when adults get distracted after an hour of work. Teachers are trying to keep the students in class instead of having physical play time, so they can spend more time on academics. Children should be given at least 15-20 minutes of recess every day. Recess is proven to be beneficial to a child’s
Imagine yourself as a student waiting in a long lunch line. When you finally sit down to enjoy your delicious meal, then the sound of the lunch bell rings and everyone departs to their next class. Every student in Conroe High School should be able to enjoy their meal without feeling rushed. Because of this, students believe it is a great idea to extend the lunch period. It will give students a longer time to eat, socialize, and it will give students a break from classes.
Can you imagine sitting in class for 3 hours straight not being able to talk eat or do anything except working? Middle school students need that recess time to take a break from all the work refresh their minds and regain focus for the next class, they need that time to study for a that big test the next class, they also need that time to simply hangout and have a conversation with their peers.
Have you ever fallen asleep in class before? Tens of thousands of kids living near you are deprived of sleep daily. They have to wake up early every weekday just to sit in a chair for the rest of the day. School schedules should be shortened because students need more sleep, a shortened schedule would improve learning, and studies have proven this beneficial for kids.
Taking such a long break from class can lead to students losing their train of thought. If we lose our train of thought, we will be totally out of it during our next class. This also leads to students wanting to cut. What if someone didn 't feel like staying the three hours and gets exhausted and just leaves? Even if we went the three hours, we would be exhausted and most likely fall asleep in class. I know the counter argument would be why doesn 't the student do some homework or try to understand the lesson he just had during his break. But in reality, which student uses their break for school work? Its called a break for a reason. In high school, we weren’t given breaks. All we had was a half hour to an hour of lunch to relieve ourselves. But it wasn 't too much time to let us lose our train of thought. Due to that, I don 't think our class should be so widely separated. This all leads back to the fact that our professors should take attendance, and make sure their students don 't fall asleep in
Not having them can provide additional time that teachers can use to improve their students academic skills. While this is true, the kids aren’t paying attention or learning anything when they’re bored, tired, and restless. They also might say that recess is too much of a liability issue because of the many injuries that happen during recess. Injuries can happen anywhere. You can’t blame kids for being kids. They are bound to get hurt occasionally. Administrators are also concerned about physical and emotional bullying that happens at recess. This could also happen anywhere. The hallways, the classrooms, the locker rooms, anywhere. While you can educate kids about the dangers of bullying, it’s going to happen no matter what you do. All of these reasons for getting rid of or shortening school breaks during the day are valid, however they are no match to the fact that recess or a free period is needed and deserved by the exhausted students to further benefit their
On super test days we learn almost nothing during periods. These periods could be used for teaching instead of silent testing. Each year schools run further and further into the summer. They say they need so many hours of teaching, while they waste full days on scantrons.
There are many opinions and studies about reforming school days. Some people are concerned that longer school days would bring more difficulties. However, there are numerous studies and practical examples that prove that we improve students’ performance by lengthening school days. Finally, the economy and our society will benefit from expanding school days.
Test scores are slowly declining across the United States. This is causing a consideration for a longer school year. If the school year calendar was elongated it would affect student learning, social life, and there would be some financial problems within schools.
