Research Paper: ADHD Why do some think kids with ADHD are bad? They are not bad, they are just impulsive and different than others. A kid with ADHD has a brain that works differently than others. Some famous people have ADHD, like Albert Einstein. He had bad grades in school, and that could have been because he did not know how to control his ADHD.
What is ADHD?
ADHD is a disorder that causes inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It is short for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD kids can get hyper and impulsive, which makes everyday things hard for them. Kids with ADHD have slower brain wave activity than other kids, which makes it hard for them to focus. Not completing tasks, problems staying organized and keeping track of things, and becoming easily distracted are also symptoms. Someone with ADHD may have difficulty paying attention in tasks, and does not seem to listen. This can happen almost anywhere if the kid is distracted. They will simply not be able to follow directions because they are distracted. An example is if other students are talking to the student, the student will get off track and start to join in the conversation. Hyperactivity One symptom is that a kid may not be able to stop talking. This can happen anywhere that they are. One of the worst places is school. The student can blurt out and talk when they are not supposed too. It is hard for them to control themselves because their limbic system of their brain doesn't function like other people's' brains. They need their teacher to understand that they have ADHD so the teacher won't think that they're rude and disrespectful. If a kid has a teacher that is right for them, they can learn and grow together. Kids with ADHD may also have way too much energy, and they will not be able to calm down. One thing that you can do is take medicine. The kind that I take (Guanfacine) lowers my blood pressure so that I have less energy. Unfortunately, these medications can have bad side effects. One of the side effects for mine is that if I do not drink enough water, I can faint because my blood pressure is too low. Being tired and not being hungry can happen as a side effect. CDC.GOV says that “Research shows that behavior therapy is an important part of treatment for children with ADHD. ADHD affects not only a child’s ability to pay attention or sit still at school, it also affects relationships with family and other children.”3 Kids with ADHD should have therapy so that they can learn about themselves and how to control themselves. One of the best ways to control ADHD is through tools. For example, if I am at school and I am getting a test, I may take some thinking putty out of my desk, or I may grab the T-stool so I can try to get some of my energy out. You want to get tools for a kid that they can use, but also, you don’t want to make it look like the tool is a big deal. If the kid would have to walk in front of the class to grab something, it might embarrass them and they would not want to do it. Tool are one of the best ways because they will not distract others, yet, they can help the person with ADHD get some of their energy out, without having to leave
One of the points they stress is how behavioral therapy can be a solution, but it is less effective and has it’s limitations. Despite it being less reliable, there are reasons why professionals and parents decide to give it a try. One of these is that parents and professionals don’t want to give their child medication. Another is that medication isn’t enough to curb their child’s symptoms. Lastly, their child has had reactions to the medication they’ve been given previously. In addition to those reasons, behavioral therapy has it’s limitations. It isn’t able to account for every setting the child will be in. Behavioral therapy isn’t able to reduce all of the core characteristics that come with having ADHD (short-attention span, impulsivity, hyperactivity). When dealing with adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD may become a challenge for many parents. Knowing the facts about this disorder and how to treat the problem is the key to a healthy lifestyle for adolescents as well as families. Many therapies and medications are available to families with children with ADHD but many questions that parents have with their children with ADHD is which therapy is best and what would work best with their children and their quality of life. The question of which therapy, alternative versus medication therapy would improve adolescent’s quality of life and behavior modification.

I learned that it is sometimes not very easy to pick out a child with ADHD, even if it is your own child. It could take years to discover that a child has ADHD. It can be easily detected once the child has entered elementary school. One of the signs of ADHD is falling behind in school, or acting up and not being able to pay attention for long periods of time. This causes frustration for the child, the parents, teachers and the other students in the classroom. It is difficult for parents because they do not want to believe that their child has a disability. It is even harder for the child because they are the ones that have to deal with the name calling, being held back a grade or two and just knowing that they are different. The issue of being different for a child living with ADHD is very stressful and could make the child not want to learn new things or pay attention in school. They just give up on trying to learn.

Physical activity helps to strengthen the brain and make it work better for children with ADHD. Kids showed an improvement in executive control. Especially in kids with ADHD, exercise helps them do better in school too.

Lists are a must, they get distracted easily, and they can’t remember what they need to do or what they were doing, so if they have a list to refer back to it will help keep them on task. As they move into the higher grades in school, work with the school counselor; develop a plan for them which may include putting them on a 504 plan. A 504 plan is an accommodation plan that the teachers and students use at school to help the student be successful. Symptoms of ADHD are controlled with medications, various types of psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments. With one of these treatments or a mixture of treatments people with ADHD can learn to be successful in school or the work environment and have productive lives.
