How would it feel to see children lose the ability to play the sports they love? Many children are left out of playing sports every year because of financial reasons. This issue has been around for decades both within Canada and internationally as well. The Canadian Tire Jumpstart charity deserves the five million dollar grant because they provide physical health and strength, character building and cognitive function to the children through the financial support in need. Physical activity is the most obvious benefit of sports participation. Children often spend too much time watching television or playing video games. But sports practices and games provide an opportunity for exercise that can help keep kids in shape and healthy. In a nationally representative survey, 77% of children aged 9–13 years reported participating in free-time physical activity during the previous 7 days as well as only out of 10 children between the ages of five and fourteen years participate in sport outside of school. Children need daily activity to stay healthy and strong (in text) which has many other benefits including emotional wellbeing, acquiring leadership skills, disincline. These are the many characteristics and attributes and Jumpstart provides for the children. They want to help not just financially with the kids and their families, but they want to generate life skills and habits that will hopefully make them more successful in life. It seems to me that participation in sports can build character, but it doesn't just happen, we must be intentional about it.
Parents and coaches need to demonstrate through their words and actions the values of sports that translate well into daily life, including respect for oneself and others, fairness, grace in defeat, humility in victory and cooperate. A story about a man named Michael Oher who came from a broken home and his estranged father was murdered while Oher was in high school. Throughout his life he was provided with little to no support, but with the help of coaches and role models leading a path for Michael, he improved as a student and enhanced his interest in sports. Without sports Michael would never had made it out of the streets and have become one best football players in the National Football League (NFL). Children who play sports are forty percent more likely to get higher test scores and fifteen more likely to go to University or college (in text). Canadian children are not as active as they could be; a new study suggests they may be among the least active kids in the world. In June, the annual ParticipAction report card gave Canadian kids a D- for their level of physical activity, the fourth year in a row they received that grade. Researchers estimated only nine per cent of kids aged five to 17 get the recommended minimum of 60 minutes of "heart-pumping activity" a day. It has been proven that the children living in more underdeveloped countries get more time to play but not as much as structured sports as Canadian kids do. Since they are underdeveloped they are able to have a more active brain function than kids living in Canada. Overall Jumpstart charity is trying to improve such low scores for kids in Canada while integrating more children into sports.

Each year, parents are spending thousand of dollars on team fees alone not including all the extras like coaching, equipment, and uniforms. Parents are spending all this extra money to one-up each other and to have the better kid. Rosenwald acknowledges, “Parents now start their kids in sports as toddler, jockey to get them on elite teams, and spend small fortunes on private coaching, expensive equipment, sway and travel to tournaments” (Rosenwald). It is like a game for the parents now too. One parent will spend this much money and then the next parent will go spend even more money and it just keeps going. Parents are spending big bucks now to believe the more money they spend now, the more likely their kid will get a college scholarship later on. Usually a youth sports coach will coach a child in two sports, covering nine months of the year, for six to eight years. A teacher is usually only in the child’s life for eight months. Our society, in terms of world sports, has grown increasingly impressive. Most professional athletes have been playing their specialized sport since grade school, and although impressive, the people we are rooting for are wearing out quickly. Although youth sports programs are a health benefit to society, they also pose disadvantages to a young person’s growth and development.
According to Up2Us, a New York-based nonprofit that promotes youth sports, from 2010-2011 more than $3.5 billion in athletic funding was cut. This has been the case across America impacting athletics from youth sports all the way up to high school and college level athletics. To have more money for school funding, schools are using athletics as a scapegoat to have enough money to fund school based activities (“Baker”). Lack of funding, due to the recession’s budget cuts, for high school athletics is ultimately hindering sports teams potential, but with more efficient fundraising, better implementation of Title IV, and more athletic facility fundraising groups, a solution could be reached.
Participating in a sport at an early age can be essential to the overall growth process during a child’s upbringing. Whether the participation is through some sort of organized league or just getting together amongst friends and playing, the lessons learned from this can help teach these kids and provide a positive message to them as they develop. There is a certain point, however, when organized sports can hinder progress, which is when adults get too involved and forget about the underlying reason to why they are helping. While adult involvement is necessary, adult involvement can sometimes send the wrong message to children when they try to make participation become more than just about fun and learning. According to Coakley (2009), “organized sports are worth the effort put forth by adults, as long as they do what is in the best interest of their children and put that thought ahead of their own agenda” (Coakley, p. 151). This is a valid argument because once adults put themselves in front of the children and their values, it needs to be re-evaluated as to why they first got involved in the beginning. Partaking in organized sport and activity from a young age can be beneficial to the overall development of children, as long as decisions actions are made in the best interest of the children and not stemming from ulterior motives of adults.
Every year there are a number of children who withdraw from participating in youth sports. While countless leave sports to pursue other interests, a significant number detest their experience in sport. First it was music programs and art classes; however, with the desperate need for teachers, athletic programs have felt the grunt of this expedition. Not only are sports and organized athletic programs vital to physical development, but also mental growth and offer children structure and goals. The children could have quit because they did not like the disappointment of losing, or because they are exhausted from their parents pushing them too hard. But parents have their reasons for pushing their children into sports. “Studies show that kids who play sports are less likely to become obese, abuse drugs or alcohol or to perform poorly in school” (McCormick). If children are not active, then they will most likely become overweight, and if they have nothing to do in their pastime, they may turn to drugs and alcohol, which usually leads to a decrease of grades in school. A parent putting his/her child in sports gives the child something to do and keeps them fit. Parents also put their child in a sport hoping that he/she will get success out of it “Eager to nurture the next A-Rod or Michelle Kwan, parents enroll their 5- or 6-year-olds in a competitive sports league or program” (Stenson). There is nothing better than seeing the student section arrive in full force or hearing the school fight song chanted before kickoff. However, when life moves on and leaves sports behind, the lessons it has instilled in athletes never disappears. The play calls may be foggy and the jersey will be too tight, but what was innocently learned in the jersey shines out at an older age. Although life lessons can be learned through everyday activities, lessons such as teamwork, self-confidence, and dealing with failure are only truly learned through sports by young athletes.
