Throughout her years as a young adult, Dionne Gordon-Starks had difficult times just as anyone else does. Managing school, work, family, and friends is never easy. She was lucky though to have people in her life to help guide her and help her through difficult times. These influential people became mentors in her life. Having someone to listen and guide you is important as a young adult, which Dionne soon realized. Having these people comfort and assist her made her realize she wanted to do the same for other young adults. This is why she chose to become an academic advisor. Dionne worked with purpose and perseverance to be able to become a mentor for others. She attended Saint Joseph’s University where she received her bachelor’s degree, but this was also where she met a very important mentor in her life. A woman, who later in life would become her mother-in-law, worked as the Director of Multicultural Life made an impact on Dionne. While she was a student in the 1990’s, she was able to come to this woman when she needed someone to guide her. Her help and assistance is one of the big reasons Dionne chose to become an advisor. Once completing her bachelor’s, Dionne then went on to complete her master’s here at Drexel University. Dionne was determined to help as many people as she could. These skills help her during her life at home as well. She believes that working in this field has helped her become a better mother to her twelve year old son, and a better wife to her husband. She has become a great listener and is even able to listen to the things that aren’t always said. Because she deals with so many different kinds of people, she is also able to not only deal with the issues college students deal with but is able to transition to understand the issues her son in middle school
There is a huge message that one can understand from Debbie’s career especially young women who are struggling with their lives. These are:
Peggy got a part-time job and continued her studies at a local community college. Soon she received a scholarship to a four-year university and enjoyed every moment of it. In the end, Peggy inspired us to take charge of our own future, and not to neglect our work. She taught us that no one else is to blame for the choices we
Dorothy Irene Height was born in Richmond, Virginia on March 24th, 1912 and raised in Pennsylvania. Dorothy’s mother did not make it to many of her school events, which only fueled her to excel in school (White, 1999). She won a $1000 scholarship from Daughter Elk because of her participation in the national oratorical contest on the U.S Constitution and she was the valedictorian of her high school class. Dorothy wanted to go to Barnard in New York but they rejected her because they had already admitted their quota of black students, which happened to be two. She ended up going to New York University where she joined a sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, and became the head of the sorority. She then earned two degrees, a bachelors in education and a masters in psychology within six years (White, 1999). After college, she began her job as a social worker that she receiv...
Valerie is from Hot Springs, AR and is currently a criminal justice major at National Park College. She has become a successful person and student by many goals she set in her life to accomplish. One of Valerie’s goals is to receive her bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. Her dream is to land a job where she can impact and help others who might need assistance. Another one of her goals is to maintain a positive attitude and continuing to be a positive role model for her children. This is an everlasting goal she stated and explained that she always wants her kids to see her doing positive so they can do the same. Valerie last goal was to see her kids break the family stigma when it comes to school. She has already had one child graduate and wants to see the others do the same thing. In shaping Valerie’s goals everything was based off her accomplishments. One of her first accomplishments is, she was the first to graduate in her family and attend college. As a kid she always saw graduating to be possible and it has gave her the courage to do much more. Another accomplishment is going back to school to further her education. She attended college in 2003, but soon left due to raising her kids. The last triumph Valerie overcame was teaching herself how to read law and medical books. Growing up early and being a mother she knew she had to be familiar with law and medical things
At Community Boards, the skills and disciplines that I learned was that I was able to handle clients through phone calls more effectively and in a manner in which I can be neutral. I also learned to be very patient with some clients over the phone, where some phone calls had spent over an hour of the client’s time talking to me about their issues at their residence. I was able to cultivate the skill of being able to use different communication styles in order to deal with certain people and their styles, for often I would have to deal with people that very emotional, because of their situation, whether they be angry, sad, or hopeless, I had to alter my style of communication to accommodate their needs and try to calm them down. Although I

Jeannette Walls is perhaps the most hard-working student I’ve ever come across. Her determination for academic and extracurricular success is what I inspire my students to attain to but never have I’ve seen a student so passionate for achieving both. Jeanette's work as a writer for our school magazine and the reaction it gets by students reading it is truly fascinating. Her way of drawing
Although education wasn’t the most important expectation from Anne’s family’s standpoint. She managed to remain focused, and dedicated. Most of Anne’s family never even managed to receive an education of any sorts. Although it may not have been their intention, but at her parents, Aunts, and Uncles times they weren’t even permitted to learn how to read and write. Regardless of her parents outcome, Anne sustained her education through her several moves, eating scraps daily, having no clothes to wear, and having to work to support her family. She still remained determined to finish what she had started. At an early part in Anne’s life she worked for a family The Claiborne’s, where Mrs. Claiborne was a teacher at her school, and her husband was a business man. The Claiborne’s became an important factor with pushing her to complete her education. Anne eventually managed to graduate from high school at the top of her class. Although her family didn’t install the best values for her education. She allowed her outside support to get her through it. Anne eventually received finances for playing basketball at Natchez College. And eventually transferred and received an academic scholarship at Taugaloo College. Eventually after believing in herself, and pushing through the barriers in the 1940’s, she became unstoppable. Anne eventually joined the NAACP and fought for the rights she felt black people
... what games to play, when with her younger siblings. She has shown industry by adapting to and excelling in calligraphy. She has gotten a boost of confidence because she receives praise for her work. She likes to be in group settings and interacts well with other children. The cause of which is because of her family, and her other siblings. By growing up with many sibling, she has learned to interact and coexist with others, this is essential in everyday society. It is also because she has been able to succeed in prior stages that she can do so well within her peer group. Because if you do not learn to trust you cannot be part of a group. If you do not have the initiative, and industry you will not be noticed, and likely not involved in society because of drive, and other things. It is because of a combination of all these things that my subject is who she is today.
These are the skills and competencies I have learned through my studies at Walden University. Kaslow, Grus, Campbell, & Fouad, et al. (2009) stated professionalism comes from my respect for those who need help. Integrity can be built with confidence in the therapist. Attitudes are charitable, polite, caring emotions toward others that fuel my motivation toward helping. This concern welfare of others comes from my religious and personal experiences as a child and young adult.
Once enrolled in a local nursing program at Ohlone Community College, Mary started to work towards her goals of becoming a nurse but reaching them did come with hardships. Mary never let anything get to her because her family never gave up their motivation. " I wanted a better life for my family and I wanted to be somebody". Mary realized that going to college wasn't just for her but it was for a better future for her family. At Ohlone community college she continued to pursue her dreams of majoring in nursing. Another thing Marry struggled through was juggling school and in work now that her classes were more rigorous. "I was more responsible for my future because I was the one working to pay for my education". Gladly, Mary was able to mature and find a way to organize her schedule to balance her life

For example, my professional expertise in the customer service field for so many years had taught me how to communicate well and how to deal with all types of people. Also, my college work experience in helping the Fullerton College students in the tutoring center, the writing center, and the transfer center thought me more about good listening skills and extending a helping hand to college students in need of my help and guidance. My assistance is provided in a compassionate and humane way, regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnicity or religious beliefs. Each student has the right to their self-determination, and I let them decide and choose what is best for them. I deliver my help in a reliable, honest and respectful manner.
