Why it is Important to Choose Your Friends Wisely What does the word friend mean? According to Merriam – Webster dictionary a friend is one attached to another by affection or esteem. So I asked a couple of my ‘friends’ what the word friend means to them and friend number 1 said that for her, the word friend means “a person who is always there for you during difficult times”, friend number 2 jokingly said “a person who buys you food”, and for friend number 3 a friend is “the person who you can run to when you need something”. And for me, a friend is a person who you trusts and believes in you when nobody else does. We all have our own definitions of the word “friend” but what’s important is if they are the kind of friend who pushes you to …show more content…
It’s important to choose the type of friend that will encourage you than the friend that discourages you. Proverbs 13:20 says, “Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.” If you have must friends, you’ll have a bright future ahead of you. If you have down friends, your future might be “futureless”. If you have down friends, you won’t achieve something in your life, you won’t be able to reach your dreams because you are already becoming one of them and there will be a tendency that you might also be dragging some of your friends down. If you are friends will a failure, there is nothing wrong with that as long as you won’t be one of them. If they are convincing you to become one of them, stay away from them because they are not good for you. Your friends either break you, or make you. Must friends make you and down friends break you. Choose your friends wisely because your friends are a big factor that will affect your future. If you have friends that motivates, inspires, supports you in everything you do, lectures you whenever you did something wrong, keep them. Trust me, they are the ones that will be with you and stays by your side in this long journey called
Webster defines friendship as the emotions or conduct of friends; the state of being friends. Growing up you realize that every relationship is tested throughout time and some make it through that time and others do not.
At the beginning of the year the people I was hanging out with are amazing people, but they didn't make me feel welcome at the table. So in the first month of school, I had already switched tables. The friends that I migrated to are good people, who make terrible decisions. They made me feel pressured to hate certain people and act a certain way. I didn't realized how much this had affected my life until recently. Those friends made me feel like I had to have something wrong with me to be different, or fit in with them. When I finally realized what they were doing to me, I left. I moved to another table, these people are the best people ever. They reminded me that I don't have to have something wrong with me to be their friend. This point in my life was just a few weeks ago, and I already feel better than I have in a long time.
By definition a friend is a person who provides assistance and support. We have different groups of friends for different purposes in our lives. Although there are many different categories of friends, Marion Winik author of “What are Friends For?” mentions that some of the more common groups consist of the faraway, work, family, and former friends (132). We keep our friends because we value their loyalty, communication, support, and dependability.
I would define friendship as complete trust and love between two people. Many people believe that this kind of behavior is reciprocated between two individuals without any expectations. A friend is someone who also provides you with support and whom you can rely on to celebrate special moments with. A friend also comes with many great attributes; such as loyalty, honesty, compassion, trust, and morality. Today’s friend is viewed as someone who shares happiness, common values, history, and equality with another. For example, Aristotle and Cicero both wrote dialogues about friendship and its significance on mankind. Therefore, the key issues that will be discussed are: their views on the similarities of friendship, the differences between friends,
“ A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself.” -Anonymous. In the novel Freak the Mighty,Max and Kevin could be themselves and have no limitations. True friendships allow you to be your own self, therefore a friend is someone you can trust and will always be there for you.
Friends have the biggest impact and influence in our lives. They can lead us to the path of success or path of failure. So everything that our parents have told us about choosing the right friends is absolutely true. As you get older, you realize that everything your parents have said or have taught you starts to make sense. You are more aware about situations and are a lot more careful so that you don't make mistakes like we often did when we were younger.
“The silver friend knows your present and the gold friend knows all of your past dirt and glories. Once in a blue moon there is someone who knows it all, someone who knows and accepts you unconditionally, someone who is there for life.” This is a quote I read once in an article by Jill McCorkle. I wrote it down and posted on my wall. McCorkle’s description of a “gold friend” describes a friendship that I have with a group of girls who mean the world to me.
Friendship. Such a word that has more than one definition to many different people. However, to Merriam-Webster, it simply means a state of being friends. But, not to me. Friendship, in my definition, is that one person who I think of when I need comfort the most, a person who would never leave me even when I want to be alone. Friendship is that one person who I can pour my heart out and not fear of being judged for it. Friendship, to me, is the reason why I am still genuinely happy in this stressful life.
Friendship is the most wonderful relationship that anyone can have. Ideally a friend is a person who offers love and respect and will never leave or betray us. Friends can tell harsh truths when they must be told. There are four different types of friends: True friends, Convenient friends, Special interest friends, and historical friends. To have friendship is to have comfort. In times of crisis and depression, a friend is there to calm us and to help lift up our spirits.
Although relationships with parents determine in large measure our longer-term preferences, attitudes and values, during adolescence it is often relationships with friends that cause most concern and which pre-occupy the thoughts of young people as they grow up.
“Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart,” was one of the famous quotes of Eleanor Roosevelt. She designates a true friend as a person who affects your life so much that you cannot live without them. Life would be miserable without a true friend, with no one to talk to. A true friend is the entire Boy Scout’s Law: “A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.” A friend in need is a friend indeed.
Choosing proper friends is a bit difficult task but not impossible. We should have a group of friends who are disciplined and punctual individuals. This is essential because of the reason that we start becoming like the people we hang out with most. If for example one or two of our close friends are involved in bad habits such as smoking, drinking and taking drugs, sooner or later we will follow suit. This is the reason why it is advisable to make a proper choice when it comes to making friends. True friendship is as a matter of fact a blessing enjoyed by a few. Those who have it should thank God for having true gems in their lives and those who do not have a few good friends should constantly strive for new ways to secure good friends. No company is better than having a friend by your side in times of need. You will remain happy in your one room apartment if you are surrounded by your friends; on the other hand, you cannot find happiness even in your mansion if you are alone.
Some friends can have negative influences on you, be friends with you for the wrong reasons or they might not be trustworthy with your secrets. Friends are extremely important to have but you want a friend that you can trust and share common interests with. Kalven and I became great friends we both trusted each other and we shared a lot of common interests, soon our friendship turned into a relationship. Becoming a couple was very odd for me so I ended it. This put our friendship on the edge for a while, it was really awkward around him. We both got over that fact and moved on with life and became just as good as friends as we once
If you decide to surround yourself with negative people who don’t have anything to look forward to in life, then you’re setting yourself up to be unsuccessful. Those negative people will try their hardest to bring you down with them. Growing up in school you had your friends in 1st grade, then in Jr. High, and then when you got to high school you might not even know or see your friends from 1st grade anymore. For the few people who’s had a friend from 1st grade till college I think that someone they need to hold on to because if they stuck with you through all of them year I know they’re there for the right reason and not just there for a season. As Elizabeth Dunphy says, “It’s the little things that matter, that add up in the end, with the priceless thrilling magic found only in a friend.”
A friend is someone difficult to find. A friend is someone you can always count on when times are tough. The dictionary's definition of a good friend is a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard. A good friend is there when you are struggling. For example, when a boy breaks your heart a good friend walks you through it and offers a shoulder to cry on. According to Bree Neff, a good friend is someone who is trustworthy, doesn't talk behind your back, listens to your problems, gives good advice and tries to lend humor along with his or her support. There are also bad friends, those who pretend to care and then turn around gossiping and starting drama. Good and bad friends are all around you, involved in your everyday life. To find good friends you should look for such traits as being kind, trustworthy, loyal and dependable.
