Riding With the Top Down; The Importance of Friendship “The silver friend knows your present and the gold friend knows all of your past dirt and glories. Once in a blue moon there is someone who knows it all, someone who knows and accepts you unconditionally, someone who is there for life.” This is a quote I read once in an article by Jill McCorkle. I wrote it down and posted on my wall. McCorkle’s description of a “gold friend” describes a friendship that I have with a group of girls who mean the world to me. I became friends with these girls when I was a freshman in high school. Since the beginning of that year, we have all been best friends. There were many times we rode around together. However, this particular Jeep ride was very significant because I realized what friendship is all about. One Saturday night, Kasi, Beth, Beka, Amy, and I had nothing to do. Like always, at times like this, we decided we would ride around town. We let the top down on Kasi’s vehicle. It was a red Jeep Wrangler, with red interior and big mud tires. We climbed in the Jeep one by one until we were all inside. Amy, Beka, and Beth all sat in the back after a fight about who had said “shotgun” first. The back was the most uncomfortable. The Jeep was only built for two backseat passengers, so with three back there, it was a tough ride. Kasi and I slid into the front seats. We strapped on our seatbelts, trying to convince the three of them in the back to do so. Our friends did not want to bother strapping in because they were too crowded, and there were only two seatbelts anyway. I was sixteen at the time, and they were all seventeen. We were the perfect picture of youth, five young girls packed into a Jeep with shorts, sweatshirts, and ball caps on. Kasi would never drive without music, so we put in one of our usual CD’s, the Charlie’s Angels Soundtrack.
The Quote ‘’ Your truest friends are the ones who will stand by you in your darkest moments; because they are willing to be brave the shadows with you, and in your greatest moments they’re not afraid to let you shine’’. To me this quote means you know who your true friends are because through the trials tribulations and darkest points they will show you light and be by your side. When greatness strikes they will be there to cheer you on and be happy for your successes. I agree with this quote because a friend is someone who is supposed to be there for you even when everyone else isn’t, someone you tell everything to and trust because friendship is something sacred finding a good genuine friend is hard to fine but once you do the support that was mentioned in the quote is natural. The two parts of literature that connect to the quote would be of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and The Freedom Writers by Erin Gruwell. The literary elements
Story: “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck ( a story about the hardships of two diverse men and their friendship)

Throughout epics there always seems to be someone alongside the hero helping and keeping him on the path of his journey. This relationship can be seen as a friendship or can even go so far as to call it a brotherhood. The companion of the hero not only stands as character foil but also a guide emotionally and physically. Even through death the lesson taught by the companion still persist, and guide the hero to a greater understanding self, and the world. The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Iliad, by Homer, both exemplify some of the lessons a companion teaches the hero. Both epics portray a hero’s need for a motivational friend or ally to help stand against overwhelming odds, and complete their journey. Without Enkidu many of Gilgamesh’s conquest could not have been possible or would have been left incomplete, and if Patroclus had not fought in Achilles place the Trojan’s would have lost the war.
It was a cold October afternoon in 1996, and I raced down the stairs and out the front door, in an attempt to avoid my mother's questions of where I was going, with whom, and when I'd be back. I saw my friend Kolin pull up in his rusted, broken-down gray van, and the side door opened as Mark jumped out and motioned for me to come. I was just about to get in when my mother called from the front doorway. She wanted to talk to me, but I didn't want to talk to her, so I hopped in pretending I hadn't heard her and told Kolin to drive off.
I don’t know where I would be without my best friend. The person who keeps me sane when my family is driving me crazy, or the person who will stay up with me all night to support me when I have a last minute paper due in a class; I don’t know where I would be without that support. I found this support in my best friend, my sister from another father, Regina. Regina is an eccentric, overbearing, lover of all things natural type of girl. She lives life to the fullest and never backs down from a challenge. She is funny, full of whit and sharper than a tack fresh out of the box. Although it hasn’t always been a smooth road for us we still remain friends to this day.
There is no industry more present in the world-wide community than the automobile industry. The automobile has changed the lives, culture, and economy of the people and nations that manufacture and demand them. Ever since the late 1800s when the first “modern” car was invented by Benz and Daimler in Germany, the industry has grown into a billion dollar industry affecting so many aspects of our lives. There are more than 400 million passenger cars alone on the roads today. During the early part of the twentieth century, the United States was home to more than 90 percent of the world’s automotive industry, but has shrunk to about 20 percent in today’s world. This drastic change has occurred by the booming economies in such nations as Japan, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, and other nations. The US auto industry “sales totaled $205 billion, or 3.3 percent of the total Gross Domestic Product.” (Tardiff 394) By the end of 19th century, there were about 500 auto manufacturers, but that number dropped sharply to 23 by 1917, and today the Big Three dominate the market. Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler make up the Big Three which account for 23 percent of the world’s motor vehicle production in 1997, with the Japanese industries coming in second, producing 21 percent. Germany produces 9 percent, Spain, France, South Korea, and Canada each produce 5 percent of the international market in 1997. In the US alone, the auto industry, which includes it’s 500,000 car-related businesses, create 12 million jobs. The automobile is clearly an oligopoly, but each company’s control of the market has gradually diminished because of rising foreign competition. The US has three main auto manufacturers, Japan has five major producers as does Germany. Each of these companies produce differentiated versions of the same product, have control over their products’ prices, and rely heavily on non-price competition. Each company produces a new line of cars for each model annually.
When we become freshmen we experience many new and exciting thing. We meet new people and form new friendships. Sometimes we get so caught up in these new experiences, and forget the important things. We forget what a true friendship should be like, or even forget that no matter how different people may seem, we are all the same on the inside. These are to very important lessons that freshmen should be reminded of before they begin their freshman year. The essays, “The Strength of Friendship” and “Humans in Need of Each Other” help to teach and remind us of these lessons.
Friendship is like an onion, there are many layers to the ideas and concepts that are associated with the notion of friendship. The idea of friendship and the complexities accompanying this type of relationship could scare someone off. To quote the song, Waving Through a Window from the 2017 musical, Dear Evan Hansen. “I’ve learned to slam on the brake. Before I even turn the key. Before I lead with the worst of me. Give them no reason to stare. No slipping up if you slip away. So, I've got nothing to share. No, I got nothing to say”. (Pasek & Paul, 2017). These lyrics from the recent Tony winner for Best Musical highlight that some people when faced with the notion of entering the swimming pool that makes up friendship, there are some
Automobile industry in the North America is a very established and was the world’s biggest automobile industry for many years, during the 20th century, which was started with a number of companies in the early 1900’s. But, as the time passed, many companies opted out the competition and some companies merged, and finally only three companies, namely Ford, General Motors, Chrysler stayed in the competition, taking advantage over other independent makers, because of their financial stability. The industry took different shapes and went through different phases-, the depression of the 30’s, the stricter government regulations for automobile manufacturing in the 1960’s
Just as globalization had both positive and negative impacts on the automotive industry, so did it impact consumers. The world now had safer, and more readily accessible methods of transportation for a larger amount of people than ever before (“Globalisation and the Car Industry”). As forces of globalization led to the expansion of markets, employment and wealth continued to increase. However, this also came with a dark side, with such issues arising as increases in pollution, city congestion, and use/dependency on natural resources, most notably oil (“Globalisation and the Car Industry”).
One of the most important details in a friendship is to never leave or forsake the other. A friend is also loyal, for example in the movie Lord of the Rings, Froto and Sam Wise had a wonderful fellowship. They lived in peace and in one accord. Also in the movie, gandalf sent froto on a mission. Froto was scared and he didn’t want to go on the journey by himself.
Life teaches us a lot of things. But none is a better teacher than friendship (Importance of Friendship). There is one person who knows who I really am and that is my best friend, Danny. Friendship is a special love. Finding a true friend is always hard. So when one is found, it is important to hang on tight. The greatest gift of life is friendship, and I have received it. Growing up, I was the girl that was confident, strong, and had all the answers. No one had fully ever understood me or my actions, I was constantly on the move, keeping myself busy with any task or activity I could get my hands on, and I never told anyone the entire truth to why that was. My appearance to always seeming assured, formidable and dependable could be imputed to one prevailing time period, but was separated into hundreds of different memories of my past, each with their cause and effect. However, it started with one substantial hit, afflicting me in my teenage years.
