Research by Rachael Wayne conveys that “bullying has gained notoriety as a type of behavior, becoming increasingly common.” In the novel Lord of the Flies Piggy is faced by a fellow crash survivor, named Jack, who embodies this “notable” behavior. The bulling faced by Piggy in Lord of the Flies, is similar to the bullying experienced by people today. In order to properly explain why bullying is an unacceptable hurtful behavior, it must first be explained what exactly bullying is. Most people have a very broad interpretation if bullying. But, what is bullying really? “Bullying is defined as intentional aggressive behavior characterized by an imbalance of strength or power.” A survey done by KidsHealth in 2004 provides that 40 percent of children from ages nine to thirteen admit to being one of these bullies. These are just the children who have the courage to admit they have bullied before. Although the bullies have committed a terrible crime to society, should we pity these bullies? In Joy Berry’s Children’s Book about BEING BULLIED a few reasons people bully are written about. The book states that some people bully due to feeling inferior, meaning the bullies need to prove that they are just as good as everyone else. The book also states, that some people bully because they are afraid, and need to look tough. In Lord of the Flies, Jack is one of these bullies. Jack bullies Piggy because he is inferior; He and a group of children are stuck on an island with no adults, no family, and no one to take care of them but each other. Jack feels he needs to prove he is a worthy leader, although he is not the oldest boy. Jack becomes power hungry and angry, due to his humiliation in front of the boys, and overthrows Ralph. Like many bul... ... middle of paper ... ...on immediately the best response is to not respond. A response will only prompt a more violent action, and more bullying more often. Also, the victim should remove himself or herself from the situation as much as possible. If the victim is being bullied on the school bus, move to the front, where it is impossible for the driver to ignore the bully’s actions. Avoiding places where adults are not present is a victims best bet to stay out of harms way. Most bullies think their victims are weak and afraid, studies show most victims are not weak; they simply are more thoughtful and considerate than others. In Lord of the Flies, Piggy is not weak mentally. Although Piggy isn’t in the best shape, nor is he the oldest, he is not weak minded. Piggy is determined. When the boys break his glasses, Piggy wants to go take them back. Because it would be the right thing to do.
Piggy had an appetite to be needed and accepted as a person in the boys' society. Jack had to kill a pig; he saw no other way.
Piggy believed in laws and rule while Jack believed in hunting and killing. This makes Piggy more outcasted because he doesn’t agree with Jack so all the boys that do follow Jack automatically don’t like Piggy. Piggy got most of the boys to agree with him on one topic. Fire. Jack and Piggy were arguing over where the fire should go and what was best for the boys, Piggy won this battle, but only this one.
Though anyone can become vulnerable to bullying, there are some commonalties between the victims. Bullies are inclined to choose a certain type of person to abuse. Typically, people who are not as strong as them. “Victims of bullying are often younger, smaller, or weaker- physically or emotionally – than their tormentors” (“Bullying” 1). Targets of bullies almost always stand out for this sole reason. They tend to wear glasses, have flaws on their face, or have a body that isn’t considered perfect by society. Sometimes, they are bullied due to their achievements. Obviously, victims of bullying are not fond of the harassment they receive. They are subjected to unwanted name calling and teasing. “I don’t want this. I don’t want people picking on me and I don’t want to be fat…I just want to be me” (Hall 222). When children are constantly abused they lose their identity. Victims are repeatedly referred to as a name that they get into the habit of it…eventually forgetting who they really are. Clearly, for once, they wish to find that person they once were – instead of being somebody a bully has made t...
...gs Jack just wanted to be in control of the whole situation the whole time no matter if he is in the right or in the wrong. This is the same with victims you cannot judge them either most of the victims are children who have poor social skills and very few friends. Poor social skills and no friends do not come from just not wanting to have them. Children who have been bullied in the past just do not want to be picked on continually and be made fun of so they stay away from other children to prevent that.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a bully is “a blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people.” The definition allows for some leniency. Bullies are not always stronger physically; they are not always picking on weak people. But they do almost always feel they have power over the victim. The act is becoming much more commonplace today, especially in schools, where bullying seems to thrive. But there is more than just the typical, often-thought-of bullying that consists of name calling and physicality. There is also psychological bullying, which is much harder to control.
Bullying is when a person or group of people repeatedly tries to harm someone weaker or someone they think is weaker than them. Anyone can be A bully if they try to hurt, upset, or deliberately make others look or feel foolish. (Bullying, page 8). Bullying usually involves an imbalance of power. In some cases the bully is not always bigger than the victim, but they try to use threats to scare other people and make them afraid. Anyone can be a bully no matter what age or gender. A person can be bullied from pre-school throughout adulthood.
Why do people bully other people? Is it because of their personal low self- esteem? Is it because it makes them feel better about themselves? Every bully will have a reason for why they bully others , but whatever their reason might be it never makes it a a good reason to hurt someone else. Over 3.2 million million students get bullied each year and over 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. Several factors increase of a student being bullied which include, parents being over protective of their children, expression of social anxiety, and even an illness or disability. Eight out of ten disabled children will be bullied each year. Some ways you can help prevent bullying are , confront the bully and make it clear that you are
...help. You can remove yourself from the situation (if you’re the victim) by switching bus routes, schools, classes, anything to get yourself away from the bully. Bullying does happen, but we need to stop it.
Bullying is when someone uses superior strength to intimidate someone to make them do what that person wants. Bullying can cause serious harm to the victim. Bullying is a huge problem in the United States schools. It’s something that can be fixed and people need to get the word out to stop it.
Someone can bully anyone for any type of reason jealousy, plane being mean, race, color, and more, but “is it a reason honestly, to take it to the extreme to make someone feel so low and embarrassed?” Some people don’t realize how much damage they can do to one person. Victims have their own personal life outside of being bullied, do the bully know exactly what the victims is going through. The victim can have a hard life without anyone knowing it and getting bullied just makes it worst for them every time they are getting attacked by the bully.
The victim must document the acts of bullying and inform their parent. The victim and parent can then meet with school officials to present the acts of bullying. Notifying school officials of the incidents allow the school to take proactive actions to stop the behavior such as meeting with the bully and the bully’s parents. If the identity of the bully is unknown, the parent of the victim can alert the police. Additionally, it would be in the best interest of the victim to not respond to the bullying. There are instances where if the bully is not engaged, the bullying may
Around 49% percent of children globally have reported seeing bullying or reported being bullied. Bullying is when someone makes fun of someone else over and over again for the same or a different reason. Sometimes, it gets so serious that the victim doesn’t want to live anymore. School bullying is a big factor of bullying in general. School bullying may actually consist of all cyber bullying, physical bullying, and verbal bullying. School bullying may actually also consist of cyber bullying, physical bullying, and verbal bullying all together
Bullying is “hurting or frightening someone who is smaller or less powerful than you, often forcing them to do something they do not want to do”. The image that used to be associated with bullying- pulling girls’ hair, tripping other kids or even pinning mean notes on their backs- ha completely changed into something much more dangerous ad complicated.
Bullying does not have a standard definition. Bullying can be anything from calling someone else names, beating them up just for the fun of it, to texting or messaging them on the internet or any mobile device. Any person can be the victim of bullying, not just children. Bullying causes many issues, physically, emotionally, and mentally, not only for the victim, but for their entire families as well. Bullies have many different reasons as to why they start bullying someone else. The actions done to the victim leaves them with only a few options on how to stop being bullied. How they handle it is always different.
But there are many reasons that a person succumbs to belittling others. Having popularity and being in the circle where all the fun is happening is what is important to most kids going thought their schooling years. As is the exact same for bullies, the feed off power and fear off everyone to raise themselves higher social. More often than not bullies may not have stable families. A persons family is a direct representation from where they come from so broken families that aren't warm and loving cause the kids to use a coping method that helps them have control in their life which is feeding off others sadness. Children who experience academic failure and perhaps have been a social outcast in the past have more of a fuel and don't feel remorse for others they are hurting on their own pursuit to find
