...ter for obese individuals than for average weight individuals. The healthier workers are, the fewer medical services they use. The five leading causes of death in the U.S., heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes — are directly linked to unhealthy lifestyles. Clearly, encouraging healthful habits presents an opportunity to improve workers’ well being, reduce the need for medical services and help control costs.
In the wake of one of Americas economic decline, the middle class bandaged up bouts of anxiety with healthism. Healthism fabricates a belief of prioritization of health and fitness over all other values, therefore becoming a feasible way for people to pretend they were creating impactful changes in society. However, healthism did not cure the original problem amongst the middle class, it merely added more side effects. Barbara Ehrenreich, in “The Naked Truth about Fitness,” emphasizes societies declining state of virtues caused by the growing acceptance in healthism. Accepting healthism as a virtue developed into one of Americas greatest illnesses. The widespread epidemic of healthism across America corrupts fundamental values.
Why should you be physically active and maintain proper nutrition? Because physical health is determined by a combination of controllable and uncontrollable factors. It is crucial that all the possible methods are taken to remain healthy. Physical fitness and nutrition are two of the most important methods anyone at any age can execute to reach/maintain their health goal. In this essay, I will go over both.
The level of the population’s level of physical activity is becoming a major public health concern in the United States (Wahlgren, 2011). As a result of urban sprawl, Americans rely heavily on personal vehicles to travel to work or other destinations. This is leading to a sedentary life style for the public as they take to their cars to travel to their destination. The public’s perception of the environments in which they live in are likely influencing their behaviors resulting in their dependance on personal vehicles. (Wahlgren, 2011). The physical environment and peoples’ levels of physical activity are directly connected. Low density zoning and auto-dependent development is resulting in the promotion of sedentary life styles. Most activities, like commuting to work or shopping, requires the use of a personal vehicle because of the area’s isolation in residential zones and commercial zones (Ewing, 2010). Alternative modes like walking or bicycling are rather impractical, as the areas often have little to no sidewalks or other pedestrian friendly amenities (Marshall, 2009). The Low density design is developed because residential homes have fewer units per acre and commercial buildings tend to only be a couple of stories and spaced further apart. The sizes of lots tend to be bigger to accommodate large parking lots that are often oversized and unsafe for pedestrians.
One of the trends that keeps growing is trying to stay fit and to get healthy. Many people have become dedicated to working out daily, cutting back on calories, and staying away from fast food, but yet the United States is still faced with a huge obesity epidemic. The United States has some of the highest obesity rates compared to other countries, but what are these other countries doing to cut back on obesity? Michael Pollan, the author of “Escape from the Western Diet” and Mary Maxfield, author of “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating” both explain various points about the issue of being healthy and eating better in America. Pollan believes nutrition and scientific theories are the problems of the Western Diet. Maxfield explains how culture influences how people eat and their views on being healthy.
During the mid 1800’s, there was a boom in machines that were used to make pretty much anything from clothes and shoes, to farm equipment. This boom is today known as the industrial revolution. Of course to work these machines, big companies had to hire poor adults and children. They hired people that not only wanted to people their families but children who were looking for something to eat and somewhere to sleep. These people worked because they had to, to survive, not because the wanted to. That’s why their bosses never cared about their health, whether it be mentally or physically.
U.S News Health has come up with the worlds top ten most obese countries. Amongst the top ten obese nations the United States ranked overall number one in having a population that is obese. They claim that 31.7% of males, 33.9% females, and 25.8%, of children are overweight or obese. (“U.S News Health”). In David Gratzer’s book titled “Where Would You Rather Be Sick?” He talks about the health risks that American’s face in comparison to Canadians. Gratzer states, “Americans have higher rates of diabetes (6.7% vs. 4.7%) arthritis (17.9% vs 16.0%) and high blood pressure (18.3% vs. 13.9%). Americans are also more likely to be obese and live a sedentary lifestyle.”(Gratzer 250). Are mortality rates surpass any other country in the world because most americans consider eating to be a hobby or even leisure time. Us Americans live an unhealthy lifestyle because of the amount of food we consume daily versus the amount of time we actually spend trying to burn the calories we obtained from eating. Americans are not as active as we use to
In addition, the more active the body is, the more healthy the body will gain and help the body to be stronger symptom wise. In the article "Teens Are Just as Sedentary as 60 Year Olds", it explains how "...the older people got, the less active they were" (4). That shows, why obesity in America is increasing. The less active people
America is one of the most obese countries in the world, with so many technologies making life easier for people no wonder why so many people are gaining weight in larger amounts than in the past. There are endless amounts of things people do to get out of doing actual physical work. An example would be the grocery store down the street. 9/10 people would most likely drive 1 mile down the road instead of getting up and going for a nice walk. Another technological advancement is the computer, Television, and the biggest one, video games. Kids and even adults seem to just stay indoors way more than just going outside and playing sports with their friends or family. America is slowly becoming the most obese and laziest nation in the world, what a great reputation the most powerful country in the world is getting isn’t it. Although there are a lot of lazy people out there, there are good amounts who venture out of their homes to go to the gym. People think they will become fit and healthy just because they’re going for at least an hour and running and lifting some weights. But going to the gym once or twice a week and not keeping a steady pace schedule and changing things up week to week will not get anyone to their peak physical levels. Now don’t get me wrong, going to the gym is progress and will get people healthier, but if someone wants to reach higher potential, lose weight and gain muscle then there are more things that someone needs to do in order to get a the full effect of a healthy workout each and every day.
America’s obesity problem has grown from a sad problem to a health disease. Everyday people die from heart attacks because they do not eat or exercise right. At the beginning of year for about two weeks’ people will go to the gym and then quit after they do not see any changes in that time. Very few people have the dedication to stick to something even when they don’t see improvement. many People do not realize the importance of exercise they think people work out for vanity but exercise and eating right helps you live longer, it helps improve people’s intelligence it gives people more energy, and it helps with everyday life.
There are probably many other reasons that Americans don’t believe that physical activity is valuable. What they don’t realize is that it is important for more than just physical health. It can also be a social activity, it can also improve mental health as well. Though there are numerous benefits, most Americans still avoid physical activity knowing how much it could improve their life. This leads me to believe that a big part of the reason is laziness. The average American lifestyle seems to be much more stationary than it used to be. Because of the way most children are raised (sitting all day in class, then going home and sitting to do homework, and sitting to play video games afterwards), the average day of an American includes less physical activity than it ever has in the past. There is no one solution to this problem, but I
