“Why Am I Here?”
I was placed in BE 122 to fix the many reasons that have made me perform poorly on an exam. In order to gain access to certain college courses, I must improve my abilities that have brought me down so that I am able to excel beyond the level that I have entered with. Throughout my college experience I plan on improving my reading skills so that one day I can have a profession that I am happy with and will give me the funds necessary for the family I wish to have.
When I was younger my parents never read to me; they would lay me down to go to sleep, give me a nice warm kiss on the forehead, and shut the lights off. I feel that this has truly hurt the way my reading skills were being developed. My parents had not attended college which hurt their ability of reading me advanced books. my education, I had to push and rely on myself to do it all. Another reason I am attending this class is because I work at Staples. My job’s busiest time of the year is when school goes back in session. On some days the checkout lines start from the opening doorway of the store, to going all the way to the back of the store to where the doors are for our warehouse. The sight of these long lines can only mean that my day is going to be busy and tiring. What my job title entails is that I don’t only have to charge people for their purchases but I also have to design and print things such as business cards, next day party banners, and posters that a customer needs within the hour. This creates a lot of stress to deal with every day. Some days I think to myself that my bosses are lucky that I don’t just take a nap on top of one of the printers. I have 40 hour work weeks, which get in the way of studying and I get home at about 12 on most nights. By the time I walk in the door I eat dinner, take a shower, and then I faintly walk to my room and pass out. Some nights I feel like I had just climbed to the top of the empire state building. This leaves me with basically no time for homework or studying. Another reason I am in this class is because I find it hard to stay focused while reading passages that do not interest me. I begin to read a passage about World War Two, and somehow the words turn into “I can’t believe how well that fried chicken was last night, I should have some more today.” Things distract me more than they do when I am not reading; there goes that fried chicken again. Then I get asked what the passage meant or other questions that I don’t understand because of my poor vocabulary. Whether it’s my parents not reading me a bedtime story or my busy job or even my lack of reading skills it has all affected me. I plan to succeed in BE 122.
In order to do so I will study more than I would in my high school English class. I plan to make a difference in my reading skills so one day I can read to a class of thirty or more students. I will accomplish this by using everything I learn from this class. I will overcome my obstacles by pushing myself to be a successful student so one day I can achieve my goal of becoming a teacher. I plan to become a better reader and test taker by taking the skills Dr. Lane will provide me with this semester and use them to the best of my ability whether it’s studying more or reading things I don’t normally read. I plan on opening up to try new things to help me not only pass this class but also to use it towards my dream. This year I will attend more sessions like ACT preparation to improve my reading skills. I plan to make more time for school. As well I hope to find an interest in reading things I don’t like. I plan to take my new reading skills and apply them to my daily life to help make the skills become more natural to me and not feel forced while improving my
reading.
I have very few recollections of my early years and the exact age I was able to read and write. Some of my earliest memories are vague on the topic of my literacy. However, I do remember small memories, such as, learning how to write my name in cursive, winning prizes for reading, and crying over every assigned high school essay. Over the last twelve years my literacy grew rapidly with the help of teachers, large school libraries, my family, and so on. There is always room for my literacy skills to grow, but my family’s help and positive attitude towards my education, the school systems I have been a part of, and the horrible required essays from high school helped obtain the level, skills, habits, and processes that I use as part of my literacy

Support from parents has proven to be of extreme importance in the literacy success of a child. This often begins with the simple ritual of “bedtime stories” in the home. Studies show that children who are read to as infants perform better in literacy later in life. From a young age, children begin to understand the workings of the written word if they are exposed to it frequently. Babies who are nowhere near having the mental capacity to read and comprehend a book are still able to “follow along” when their parents or caregivers read to them. These children understand that each segment of writing represents a word and they are even able to recognize when a text is upside-down because they are accustomed to the appearance of writing. This puts the child significantly ahead when the time comes to learn to read.
Over the course of this semester, I have progressed as a writer. Picking up new skills and dropping old bad habits has transformed me into a much better writer than when I entered the English 101. Entering this class, the only English classes that I took were mandatory high school classes all four years. In these classes, however, content was focused on reading novels, poems, and literature. There was usually only one major writing assignment each year, which was a research paper on a topic that was given by our teachers. Although there was some writing involved in these classes, most of the class time was spent on improving my reading and comprehension skills. A small part of the class was given to improve my skills as a writer and even a researcher. In English 101, however, most of the class time was spent on writing and more specifically, academic writing. This includes doing proper research, picking a worthy topic to write about, correctly analyzing sources, and developing a well-rounded, complete paper. I have progressed a writer over the semester by effectively integrating and analyzing sources better, and being more specific with my words.
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
I am Stuart Keith from your B-day third block AP English 12 class, and I am looking forward to a great senior year in your class. This year, I am planning on dual enrolling in AP English in addition to taking the AP exam in May. My goals for this school year include maintaining straight A's as I have throughout my entire high school career, get into college, and fix my studying and procrastinating problems. After high school, I want to attend college and intend on majoring in civil or mechanical engineering. In school my strongest subject is math. I will this school year will pass all my test, exams, and quizzes.My obstacle would be to get into the habit of studying and look back at my notes more. After that I would want to pay more attention in my class. Then I want to get into the habit of writing notes over again. Throughout my childhood I was never very good at reading. It was something I always struggled with and I grew to not like reading because of this. As a child my mom and dad would read books to me before I went to bed and I always enjoyed looking at the pictures and listening. Then, as I got older my mom would have me begin to read with her out loud. I did not like this because I was not a good reader and I would get so frustrated. During this time I would struggle greatly with reading the pages fluently, I also would mix up some of the letters at times. I also struggled with comprehension, as I got older. As young girl I growing up I do not remember my parents or brother reading just for the enjoyment. The only parent I would ever see reading anything was my father and usually that would be the bible because he would have a lesson to teach at church. My mother till this day I have yet to see her read a book period. Do not get me wrong my mother does know how to read but does not find it enjoying at all therefore if it not a necessity she refuses to do it. And there is my brother, who I would see reading but that was only because he had a book report to complete.
I was told this was for my benefit, but it did not feel like it at all. If it wasn’t for my parents I wouldn’t have been able to get to the way I am in my writing and reading. My parents would tell me their stories every day when I was young until the time I got into high school. From what I had gathered from their story is that it all starts from reading and writing. How they read and write is very different on how the way I would read and write if you compare the two.
I also believe that I will learn more in Language Arts in the future. Right now as a reader, I can fix what I am doing now and make it better in the future,I have observed that I only have been reading the required 20 minutes every day,soon though I hope to read at least half an hour to an hour of reading every day. I have also noticed that I have only started to read after dinner so I hope in the future I will read right after I finish all my other homework instead of only reading when I am done eating dinner.
Since the start of this class I have started looking at topic sentences, asking myself questions about what I am reading, and I have tried to stay out of my bedroom while reading. Since I have started staying out of my bedroom while reading I find that I understand the text better and pay more attention to what I do not understand. I have also really started
When I was younger, I didn’t like reading much at all. I always questioned my teachers what was the purpose of reading; I never got an answer from either teacher until I was in the seventh grade. Starting junior high school was different from elementary. In seventh grade, we were in our reading class for two hours a day. I asked the teachers why didn’t we have the privilege to stay in our other classes for two hours; I never received an answer from my teachers.

I did not fail any of my classes and instead received good grades for my perseverance. As an immigrant to a new country, my greatest barrier is English. Consequently, I had to go to tutoring and work three times more than native English speaking students. But despite the frustrations, I never allowed myself to give up. I never stopped striving for excellence. I worked very hard and took advantage of extra credit opportunities, even though I was already earning a good grade in the course. My short-term academic goals are graduating from Cosumnes River College in Spring 2019 with an Associate of Science degree. I plan to start my bachelor degree next fall at CSU, Sacramento and graduate in spring 2022. I am motivated to succeed because my degree is not only for me but also the epitome of how far my family has
