Kayleigh Dimas As a reader in 6th grade Language Arts I have improved already from what I have learned before. From what I am now as a reader will help me in the future to learn how to become an even better one. Readers Workshop and using thinkmarks has strongly improved my ability with reading and understanding the text. In the future, I believe I will be a better reader than before. I also believe that I will learn more in Language Arts in the future. Right now as a reader, I can fix what I am doing now and make it better in the future,I have observed that I only have been reading the required 20 minutes every day, soon though I hope to read at least half an hour to an hour of reading every day. I have also noticed that I have only started to read after dinner so I hope in the future I will read right after I finish all my other homework instead of only reading when I am done eating dinner. I have realized that I have not yet abandoned any books I have purchased or borrowed and I wish to not abandon any book and give it a chance. One more thing I have noticed is that I have been reading very fast and I hope to slow down a bit so I don’t pass through words. …show more content…
Some of the reading strategies I was taught haven't really impacted my life in reading, but others helped me a lot. Envisioning as I read has helped me because I could see what the main character was and helped me understand better about what was going on in the text. Another reading strategy that helped me with my reading was deciding what kind of person my main character was because it helped me understand why they were doing what they were doing. One more strategy that helped me with reading was to use my interactive voice instead of a distracting voice while reading because it kept me in my own world reading my book instead of suddenly thinking about one thing after another with nothing related to the
Each year as I grow old, I tend to discover and learn new things about myself as a person as well as a reader, writer and a student as a whole. My educational journey so far has been pretty interesting and full of surprises. Back in Bangladesh where I studied until high school, my interest for learning, reading or writing was so very different compared to how it has become over the years. I could relate those learning days to Richard Rodriquez’s essay “The lonely Good Company of Books”. In the essay the author says, “Friends? Reading was, at best, only a chore.”(Rodriguez, page 294). During those days I sure did feel like reading was a chore for me and how I was unable to focus and I could never understand what all those jumbled up words ever meant. It was quite a struggle for me in class when the teachers used to assign us reading homework. I felt like reading a book was more difficult or painful than trying to move a mountain. Just like how moving a mountain is impossible, trying to find an interest in reading was
I find it easier expressing myself through words and understanding other individual 's thoughts and actions through speech and writing. By studying a piece of text I am able to retrieve a lot of relevant information from it, I find this an easy way to learn because I reflect back by making notes so I am able to look back on notes for situations such as assignments and revision for exams. This is why I find reading techniques such as skim and scan reading difficult because I need to read a piece of text, highlight the important information and make notes to ensure that I have gained a good understanding. I could possibly improve an approach for my reading by looking at step by step guides to skim and scan reading online. This could help for large amounts of reading which I have to read quickly in seminars and lectures and to draw only the important information
I have gradual select books fastidious. However, this does not mean that I do not like reading anymore. I think I just become mature and change my taste for reading. I am no longer satisfied with the novels which are easy to read. I change my taste to read some historical and religious books, and try to read more serious literature. For example, I like to read “A Global History” which will let me know a detailed history of the world. And I like the book “Old Man and the Sea” which wrote by American author Ernest Hemingway. Although the story of “Old Man and the Sea” is short, it has a profound moral. In this story, the old fisherman finally failed to take back a fish, he just took back the fish’s chine with the head and tail. However, the old fisherman still is a hero because his indestructible sprit. I am impressed with “But man is not made for defeat,” the old fisherman said, “A man can be destroyed but not defeated” (Hemingway). After I read this book, I sometimes reviewed my reading journey. If I read this book early in my teenage, I might not understand the meaning behind the story. Therefore, I think my sprit world gradually become mature with the help of
Looking forward, I firmly believe that A will benefit from reading lessons that engage her higher-level thinking. She is a good decoder and clearly loves reading. It would be a goal, if I was her teacher to help her see that we can gain meaning from stories and text no matter what they are about – making the story relevant to the way we think is how we learn more – metacognitive awareness is something I believe she would benefit from and employ as she is an intelligent young girl with a great enthusiasm for learning. Reading is seen as a simple task that a person learns at a young age. This is not true. In the Introduction to the book called “Ways of Reading” by David Bartholomae, Anthony Petrosky, and Stacey Waite explain that reading and writing is a complex process that may be difficult to understand. Two terms mentioned heavily in this book are reading against or with the grain. These being two complex terms when it comes down to reading. In most novels the author gives the reader the opportunity to agree or disagree with them. Reading with the grain is taking the author’s insight, while reading against the grain is not supporting the author’s view but your own. Both of these terms have different meanings but when it comes down to reading both of these
She understands what she has read when she uses her classroom reading strategies Danica continues to struggle with reading fluency, finding specific details, identifying the main idea, understanding the meaning of a text, making inferences, predicting what may happen next and drawing conclusions for the regular education curriculum These difficulties in language arts/reading has negatively impact Danica ’s ability to perform grade level text independently within the regular education
As this journey continues in my life, I am happy that I’m almost to the end of my journey. But learning is like and endless line, one can never get too much of it. For what we have knowledge of are pinch of glass of water from the ocean of education. Looking forward on becoming more literate for it will guarantee me respect, credibility and high economic status from society. My early journey of literacy has allowed me to be reach a level my parents and I can be proud of. Now my curiosity not only partakes in literacy but also to a successful future.
Throughout this year, I have read many different works of early English literature. From reading these works and following the rules of Vladimir Nabokov, I have grown tremendously as a reader since the beginning of this year. From reading Alice in Wonderland to now, I have grown to appreciate literature much more. I have developed a better sense of the English language through the use of a dictionary and the difficult sentence structure of works such as the Canterbury Tales, Beowulf, Le Morte D’Arthur, and the Fairie Queene. Because of the difficult sentence structures, the different word usages, and the deeper meanings wrapped in each of these works, I have learned to reread to better my understanding of the text and to see if I missed anything the first or second time through. I have also learned to not only read a novel or poem just for its story but to look deeper into it while considering its context and purpose. By following Nabokov’s simple rules, I have become a better reader and re-reader.
In life you have everyday obstacles that you are faced with, some obstacles are big and some are small, but in spite of the obstacles you strive to overcome them. Learning to read and write was a huge obstacle for me because when I was younger I didn’t care about anything but video games and toys. Later, as I grew up I saw the importance of those essentials and eventually learned how to read and write. Even though I could read and write I had to face a lot of adversity just because I stutter. It 's times where I had to read out loud and was so nervous that I would stuttered, or times where I would be talking and get tongue tied and people would laugh, but as I got older I stop caring what people think of me and overcame it.

I have gained some insight from certain readings. "Who Shall I Be" really struck me in a good way. It talks about the reality of positive and negative consequences resulting from some sort of change. Changes can be dangerous at times. Not physically, but mentally. I guess it could be physical in some situations. I feel I have become a more mature reader since high school. Reading experience leads to reading success. That’s my opinion. I used to not be able to focus when I read, but you just have to stick it out and read and read and read. I feel I am a focused reader now, I try hard. I have also gained mental reading confidence. You break that down.
Fluency Strategies According to Cooper, Robinson, Slansky, and Kiger (2015), “fluency is the ability of the student to read words and connected text smoothly and correctly with understanding” (p. 11). Fluency is important because it is needed to enjoy reading. Students who cannot read a story fluently lose touch with what the author is trying to say, and the magic of the story becomes lost in the struggle. Furthermore, not only is the magic of the story lost, the ability to comprehend text, in general, becomes difficult.
Students should be able to choose what the class reads next year in English class based on the standards. First, students can relate to other students on what books are interesting to their age group. Next, students will continue to read more books from the author or series. Lastly, students will get a chance to choose a book they will benefit from. That shows why students should have an influence on the book that the class reads next year in English class.

In which the printed word is being transformed by the digital.
