“Books are uniquely portable magic,” Stephen King wrote on “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft”. I quite agree with this view. In retrospect, the genres of books which I read gradual vary as my age periods. Additionally, those books which I have read browsed my horizon and improved my understanding ability to some degree. As a preteen, my parents thought that reading as a good hobbit needed to be foster from my childhood. Therefore, I had a bedtime for stories since I was three years old. My parents would prepare different stories and read for me everyday. The books at that time always had more cartoons than characters, and my parents would teach me to recognize characters in the books. I have gradual select books fastidious. However, this does not mean that I do not like reading anymore. I think I just become mature and change my taste for reading. I am no longer satisfied with the novels which are easy to read. I change my taste to read some historical and religious books, and try to read more serious literature. For example, I like to read “A Global History” which will let me know a detailed history of the world. And I like the book “Old Man and the Sea” which wrote by American author Ernest Hemingway. Although the story of “Old Man and the Sea” is short, it has a profound moral. In this story, the old fisherman finally failed to take back a fish, he just took back the fish’s chine with the head and tail. However, the old fisherman still is a hero because his indestructible sprit. I am impressed with “But man is not made for defeat,” the old fisherman said, “A man can be destroyed but not defeated” (Hemingway). After I read this book, I sometimes reviewed my reading journey. My parents have always stressed the importance of reading. Throughout my whole life, they have motivated me to read and they have encouraged me to find books that I find interesting to read. Because of their encouragement, I am an avid reader today. When I was a child, just starting to enjoy reading I liked to read books that were fiction. Some of my favorite books to read as a child are series that I still love today and I think I still have every book in each series stored in my attic. They are The Boxcar Children, Junie B. Jones, and The Magic Tree House.
I began to read not out of entertainment but out of curiosity, for in each new book I discovered an element of real life. Over the years, as time passes by I have become to better understand myself and learn what captures and disappoints my attention. As a young boy I would think no books pertaining to school or gaining beneficial knowledge would ever interest me. As I read and learned about different cultures and heard mesmerizing stories of Prophets I became eager to read more along with interesting worldly based novels. Miraculous real life events and interesting action based novels are the only stories that grab my attention. As a child, I have always been fond of reading books. My mother would read to me every single night before I went to bed and sometimes throughout the day. It was the most exciting time of the day when she would open the cabinet, with what seemed to be hundreds of feet tall, of endless books to choose from. When she read to me, I wanted nothing more than to read just like her. Together, we worked on reading every chance we had. Eventually I got better at reading alone and could not put a book down. Instead of playing outside with my brothers during the Summer, I would stay inside in complete silence and just read. I remember going to the library with my mom on Saturdays, and staying the entire day. I looked forward to it each and every week.
It is likely for one to assume that a classic piece of literature set in a fantasy oriented stage will have no merits to the youths of today. The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, however, with its crafty of usage symbolism, displays its relevance to issues that often trouble teens. As the story progresses from a children’s tale to an epic, the main character Bilbo undergoes a series of development, his experiences often overlapping with ordinary people. Reading the Hobbit will provide teens with opportunities of exploring the importance of several common but serious topics. People may encounter many of the themes presented in the book elsewhere repeatedly, but it’s possible that they never appreciated the applications it might have on themselves. When teens read the Hobbit, they perceive it as a simple fiction of adventure. Under proper guiding, they will be able to recognize and utilize the lessons of the Hobbit, and improve their attitudes and ideas about life.
The Hobbit is a treasured and cherished children’s book, but the work is frequently ignored by adults who demote it to the nursery bookshelf and hand it down to younger siblings or store it away for the next generation. J.R.R. Tolkien was so successful at alluring to children through The Hobbit that it has a tendency to stay locked into the genre of children’s stories and sometimes even devoted Tolkien fans abandon it when they mature and so they move on to The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.
Ever since I was a young child, I have loved to read. Whether it was Chet Gecko, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, A Series of Unfortunate Events or Animorphs, or Diary of a Wimpy Kid, they all provided me with hours of entertainment and an escape from everyday life. I can remember like it was yesterday that I had a passion to read. Learning new words and reading new books excited me as a teen. It all started when I was in ninth grade. I wasn’t your typical fourteen-year old child reading children library books. I loved reading the young adult books. My favorite author was Ellen Hopkins. She wrote most of her novels about teens struggling with substance, abuse, feelings, sexuality, etc. I didn’t go through the problems like the teens in the books, but the stories made me think a whole new perspective in the teen world. If one were to look at my varied reading habits, they would be struck by the diversity and over all unusualness of my mind’s library. I hardly remember the plot of the first book I read, but it was called Lonesome Dove. It wasn’t the actual first book I read, but I don’t really count the McGregor Readers from kindergarten. I read it in first grade because of my Grandmother’s fascination in the T.V. mini-series that was playing during the time. I wanted to be able to talk to her about it so I went to the public library that weekend and picked up a copy. Well, I actually didn’t pick it up, it was too heavy. It took me over two and a half months to read, but with the help of a dictionary and my grandma, I finally read it from cover to cover. I can’t really say that I understood it, because I don’t recall what it was about. But I do remember that it was quite an ordeal. Since then I have read many books. I enjoy fiction the best, especially those that are based on society, but have a small twist that leads to an interesting story. Some of the stories that I remember best from that early time in my life are Tales from Wayside Elementary School, Hatchet, The Godfather, and The Giver. I think that Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, is the only book that I’ve read more than once. I liked the situation that Brian was put into, lost in the wilderness, with nothing more to fend for himself with than his mind and a trusty hatchet. The adversity he faces and his undying drive are what fascinated me most. Since that time my reading habits have grown into a different style. I have usually only read what was assigned to me during the school year because that was all I had time to do, but I have always strived to put forth extra effort. For example: last year for English 3 AP we had to read an excerpt from Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography. Although that we only had to read a small bit, I checked the entire book from the college library and read it all. Although the way that Franklin rambled on and on about his “Franklin Planner” was somewhat boring, the way he describe his life was pure poetry.
I also remember as young girl learning how to read and my favorite book that I could quote word for word was “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr.Suess. I loved that book so much I still have that today. As I got older my love for reading and books started to diminish, I went to a private school for my elementary years and their curriculum was very intense. It was required to read a book from their approved list and complete a book report each summer before the school year began. Not to mention the numerous books reports I would have to complete during the school. At an early age books and reading was something I had to do and not what I wanted to do.
