The Envisioner The envisioner has the ability to focus on one big idea and follow it. As a highly effective educational leader, the envisioner reflects and mediates with a sense of purpose. Highly effective principals are able to see academically declining schools and view what they will look like after the mission. An envisioner definitely begins with a school vision in which others may not or cannot see. Horn Lake Intermediate School’s Principal Rosie King begins her first day of the new school year with a vision in mind. Her vision is to improve student learning regardless of students’ social economic statuses, free or reduced lunch rates, and previous years’ state assessments. The school’s motto is “We teach with Hope, Love, and Integrity.” Mrs. King is determined to grow every student through high expectations and rigid work.
She envisions success and moves our low achieving intermediate school forward beginning with improving students’ reading comprehension and demonstrating proficiency in all core subjects. In conclusion, Mikayla may not be where she thinks she should be in her reading, but she accepts that reading is not her strong suit. However, instead of giving up, Mikayla attempts with her best effort. She double checks her clarity with questions and is not afraid to highlight the text or take additional notes. Mikayla does not let her disabilities define her but rather plays them up as a strength. She also does not let the comment of her twelve grade English teacher define her as well. Mikayla has improved her reading skills based on her own and her parent’s assessments. She admits she is extremely lucky to have overly involved parents and sibling who have guided her in becoming a better reader. With graduation coming up, Mikayla understands the struggles of a reader but, she will do her best to help her students succeed just like others have helped her.

The running record assignment provided me with insight on how to effectively assess a student, analyzing and interpret data and consider strategies to address areas of need and/or strengths. The process of giving this assessment has allowed me to better understand and appreciate running records. I understand the value of using an assessment that evaluates a student’s reading ability. As an educator, I understand that negative impact of not having a highly qualified teacher in every classroom. In the last decade, people have decided not to study education and many educators have left field. Therefore, I believe it is of the upmost importance to identify future educators at an early age. Moreover, this project will have a positive impact on students at Jefferson County High School. As a life-long learner, I believe it is crucial that I set the example for my students. It is my desire to make this a great experience for them and to learn new things as we matriculate through the program.
The student that I am tutoring for this assignment is in third grade and she has been classified as an English learner and her current CELDT level is Intermediate. In listening and speaking her level is advanced, but her level is intermediate in both reading and writing. Her first language is Spanish and she was in bilingual classes from kinder to second grade. During these three years, she learned how to write and to read the basics of Spanish and everything was provided to her in Spanish, including her books. The student did well while having all kinds of school work in Spanish, but now she is having difficulty since she has little knowledge of the English language. This years group of students have by far been the “neediest” that our school has had. The reason I say neediest is because there are a large number of students who are reading significantly below reading level and some who are barley learning to read. Since I am in a secondary school, the primary educational resources and knowledge on how to teach kids to read is missing. Being a second year teacher with barely any experience in teaching how to read, I am one of the teachers that does not know how to teach these students how to read. By furthering my education, I am making it a goal to learn how to teach reading in a secondary setting.

For my community involvement project, I volunteered at Memminger Elementary School for a program called “Reading Partners.” The program focuses on helping children build strong literacy skills to carry with them into their academic careers. It requires the tutor to read to the student that has been assigned, and in turn, the student reads to the tutor. The program assists in teaching the students valuable reading skills. Being able to read is critical to a child’s educational success.
One of the lessons Miss Wendy has taught me is that having the ability to learn is sometimes more important than the facts I may be learning.
