The Sniper and the Cranes
The main character of “The Sniper” is the republican sniper and the main character of the “Cranes” is Songsam. In “The Sniper”, the sniper is in a war and he is trying to kill his enemy. At the beginning of the story, he is on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge lay watching. Beside him lay his rifle and over his shoulders was slung pair of field glasses. He looked like he was a student. He was self disciplined but was extremely devoted towards the war. He was eating a sandwich because he eaten nothing since morning. He is going to smoke but he paused and thought whether he should or shouldn’t but he did. In the “Cranes”, Korean War is going on. During this war, many villages along the thirty-eighth parallel changed hands several times.

Songsam, the main character lives in thirty-eighth parallel.
He saw his old childhood friend. His childhood friend was a prisoner. He meets his friend and he volunteers to escort his friend. In both stories, a war is going on. The situation of the Sniper is more tragic right now. I think that the resolution of the cranes is most hopeful than “The Sniper”. Both characters learn similar lessons at the end of the story because at the end of the “Cranes”, he let his friend go and learns that family is more important that war and in “The Sniper”, he kills his enemy but he comes close he realizes that he killed his brother and he learns that war tear families apart.
In the story “The sniper”, the sniper face an external conflict and an internal conflict. His external conflict was the enemy sniper. He saw an old woman heading towards the man in the turret. The old woman was pointing at the sniper. Sniper thought
that the man and the woman are going to kill him so the sniper shoots the woman and the woman with a shriek into the gutter. Suddenly from the opposite roof somebody shot him. The sniper dropped his rifle with a curse. His forearm was dead. He ripped his sleeve open and saw that the bullet had lodged in the bone. He opened an iodine bottle and let the fluid drip into the wound. A sudden attack swept through him. He lay still for a long time nursing his wounded arm and planning escape. He had to kill his enemy and he could not use his rifle. He only had a revolver and then he thought of a plan. He tricked his enemy by pretending he is dead. His enemy saw the cap and the rifle fall and thought he killed the sniper. Sniper’s enemy stood up because he thought that he killed the sniper but he didn’t. The sniper stood up and shoots his enemy with his revolver. After he kills his enemy, he utters a cry of joy. When the sniper looked at his enemy falling, the lust of battle died in him. He started feeling remorseful. He started cursing the war, cursing himself and everybody. He decided to leave the roof now and look for his company commander, to report. There was not much danger going through the streets. When sniper reached the street level, he felt curious to see his enemy’s face. On the way, a machine gun tore up everything around him but he escaped. Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face. In the story “Cranes”, the main character is Songsam. He returns to his village and realizes that it’s not the same village as he remembered. The village as a whole showed a few traces of destruction from the war. On his way, he stopped and climbed a chestnut tree. He remembers his childhood memory of an old man saying “ You bad boy, you’re climbing up my chestnut tree again!”. The old man was passed away. Holding the trunk of the tree, he gazed at the blue sky. Some chestnut fell on the ground. He saw that in a public peace-police station, a young man stood, tied up. Songsam approached him to take a closer look and he realizes that the person who is tied up is his old childhood friend, Tokchae. This relates to sniper because the sniper also realize that the person he killed is his brother. Songsam asked the police officer what it was all about. Tokchae was the vice chairman of the Farmers Communists League and had been flushed out of his hideout in his own house. Songsam lit a cigarette and sat down on a dirt floor. After sometime, he said “I’ll take the fellow with me.” Tokchae refused to look at Songsam. They left the village. On their way, Songsam had many flashbacks. One of them was they were trying to get chestnuts and Songsam fell and lost his chestnuts. Tokchae gave Songsam his chestnuts. This actually motivates him to decide to smoke in front of his friend. He shows kindness because his friend did too. Songsam also learns about recent developments on Tokchae’s life once his friend begins to talk to him. Tokchae said that he stayed with his family because of his father. His father’s health is not good. He was not well. They had their land there. They had work. This information complicates Songsam’s feelings about his friend. Tokchae was likely to convince Songsam to leave him because Songsam started thinking that his friend did the right thing by staying back and take care of his father and land. Suddenly, Songsam remembered his fault. He left his family behind because of the war. He was embarrassed because he left. They both started walking. Songsam again had a flashback of his childhood memory. They were trying to set cranes free from the trap. They heard a shot gun and thought that the cranes were dead but they weren’t. It took cranes a minute but they flew. Now Songsam was thinking his friend as a crane and thinking about letting him go. After some time, he let his friend go because he thought that his friend was innocent. In “The Sniper”, the sniper killed his brother and in “Cranes”, Songsam let his old childhood friend go. Friends and families are more important that war because war can tear them apart. These two stories are similar but are a little different at the end.
In “The Sniper” the conflict is man vs man, which means main character is tasked with killing his enemy, but it proves to be quite a challenge. Even though there were many challenges the sniper followed through with his job and persevered even after he was shot in the arm. Wanting to kill his enemy, stay alive, and be one step closer to ending the war was his main goals. Being brave, he took off his hat, placed it on his gun, and raised it above the edge of the roof. Instantly the enemy shot at it and the sniper, pretending to be dead, waited until the enemy got up for him to shoot him. He did some quick thinking and, with determination, handled the conflict quite well.
The Red Badge of Courage and The Blue Hotel: The Singular Love of Stephen Crane
In the story, “The Sniper”, The sniper showed that he was an intelligent soldier. In the beginning, after Being shot by the enemy sniper the sniper took care of his wound and was able to compose himself and think of a plan. Thinking he had won the battle after the snipers successful decoy the enemy sniper dropped his guard and the second he did the sniper
The story, whose main theme is violence, attempts to chronicle the short span of fanaticism that inspires youth that leads to turmoil in the first place. In this chaotic situation however, fanaticism is what. one may need in order to survive and this is exactly what the sniper is facing. This is shown when the sniper is said to be the “student”. with the face of an ascetic”.
While “Bloody Sunday” was told from the perspective of people who were affected by war, “The Sniper’ was told from the perspective of a soldier. For example in “Bloody Sunday’” they were talking about how people died because of the war but they didn't experience it first hand, as it states in the song, “There’s many lost but tell me who has one.” This quote demonstrates how many people have died from war and although many people were affected by it they were not the ones who actually died in the war or fought in it. While in “The Sniper” it showed someone who was directly affected by the war, as the author states “ Then when the smoke cleared, he peered across and uttered a cry of joy. His enemy had been hit.” The soldier knew what it was really like to be in the war and he also killed people during it. THe people in the song however were not directly affected by the war. The two authors had each text written from different points of view causing them to be
One on the differences is that The Sniper takes place in Dublin, Ireland and the story Ambush is in Khe Vietnam. Another difference between the two short stories is that The Sniper takes place on a rooftop near O’ Connell bridge and Ambush takes place in the bushes beside a winding path. “ On a rooftop near O’Connell bridge a republican sniper lay watching.” The Sniper takes place in 1921 and Ambush takes place in the Vietnam war sometime between 1962 and 1972. The two short stories are similar because they both take place at night but Ambush is a foggy, hot night and The Sniper is a dark cold night.
His quick thinking and desperate attempts to avoid an intricate situation ends with him killing his enemy, but the consequence is later revealed at the end of the short story. O’Flaherty writes, “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face” (4). In other words, the enemy that the Republican sniper shoots at the end of the passage was not only his enemy, but his brother. The action of killing his brother shows that the Republican sniper is to blame because he takes action, without much thought, and does not consider that he is shooting his own flesh and blood. The Free Stater sniper is utterly the same as the Republican sniper because he views his enemy the exact same way. He does not ruminate on whether his enemy lives a different life outside of the war. Another sentence that is prominent in showing the mindset of the snipers wanting to create bloodshed from each other is, “ He must kill that enemy…” (3). O’Flaherty writes this to showcase the Republican sniper’s thoughts and feelings through his elaborate plan to assassinate the opposing sniper. The Republican sniper merely deliberates on how he will eliminate his
“The Sniper” and “The Most Dangerous” Game are both different stories, written by different authors. Liam O’Flaherty is the author of “The Sniper”. He was born on one of Ireland’s Aran Islands, in a large family. Since the Aran Islands have a tradition of oral storytelling, Liam O’Flaherty’s house was full of different kinds of stories. He also wrote about Irish peasant life and captured the struggles of the Irish Civil War. His best known novel is “The Informal”, and it talks about a betrayal set during the Irish Troubles.
To close, it is represented in my essay that Crane is clearly out to give the "realistic" perspective on a society plagued with many problems, whereas Alger gives representation to the "mythic" aspect of life which is commonly phrased as "dreams come true."
"There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful thananything that bleeds. Don 't wait until you break. - Laurell Hamilton" This is oftentimes the sentiment felt by soldiers who have served in active duty and have been witnesses to tragedies that leave them emotionally scarred. The Clint Eastwood directed film, American Sniper is amovie that features the real life tragedy of American soldier, Chris Kyle, who served in theUnited States military as a Navy Seal, which is an elite group (Kenny, 2014 and Treitschke,2015). His story is unique in that he himself suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), but as he worked to recover, he valiantly served again by helping fellow soldiers withPTSD ("Chris Kyle," 2013), and was senselessly gunned
In the short story “The Sniper,” author Liam O’Flaherty deals with a conflict that still has divided ireland since the civil war ended, showing few signs of lessening. The fighting takes place in the heart of Dublin, Ireland, after sundown. The Irish Republican Army is engaged in a civil war with the Free State. The youthful main character, the Republican sniper, has been affected by the war and is now a fanatical looking soldier, forced by warfare to grow up too fast. The sniper needs to operate as a seasoned warrior in order to live. If he fails to develop as a cunning fighter, he will not survive. “The Sniper” emphasizes a profound irony of civil war: A brother is pitted against his own brother---who, ironically, is poised to kill the republican
The setting to “The Sniper” plays a vital role in understanding the meaning O’Flaherty was trying to convey. The main character is sitting on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge in Dublin Ireland. During the Irish Civil War, the river that flowed beneath the bridge, was the dividing line in the Battle of Dublin. From the beginning, when civilians watched the opening attacks from atop the bridge, to the end, when it shook from the final bombing that forced the Republicans to surrender, the bridge was a key factor to the end result of the war. We all have our own opinions on what is right and wrong and what makes us feel sympathetic or considerate to what is going on around us. No matter how much you dislike or look down on decisions and judgements of your neighbor we all have certain traits that make us resemble others. The Sniper and Lather and nothing else are two different short stories that at first seem completely different, but after looking deeper into them they may not be as different as they may seem. Before comparing these two stories you might ask yourself, How could two different time periods relate to each other? And can places on opposite parts of the world share the same issues? It shows us that in some ways we are all very different but in some ways we are all the
“It’s not about how many I killed it’s about how many I could’ve saved.” These were the words spoken by Chief Petty Officer Chris Kyle a U.S. Navy SEAL and the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history.
