Violence usually solves nothing but perhaps sometimes it can For example in the Irish Civil War after brutal fighting and 2500 deaths they finally became independent. Since then this atrocious war has been the inspiration for many works of literature. The purpose of the song “Bloody Sunday” by U2 was to explain the terrible effects of war while in the short story “ The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty the purpose was to explain what war was really like from a soldier’s perspective. This makes the two texts different because they were both told from different points of views.
In “Bloody Sunday” the author uses imagery to explain the terrible effects of war. The author uses imagery to make the reader feel those horrible effects. One example of imagery

can be found in the line “Broken bottles under children’s feet” by using imagery the author is able to make the reader imagine children stepping on broken shards of glass. And when people step on broken glass it's extremely painful. The author uses imagery to make the readers feel the pain felt by the children, this gives the reader a better understanding on the awful effects of war. Another example of imagery the author used was in the line “ Wipe your tears away.” Through this line the author creates the image of people crying and usually when people cry it’s because they’re sad. This prove that the author is using imagery to explain the terrible effects of war, sadness. All the imagery used by the author is used to explain the terrible effects of war. In “ The Sniper” the author uses characterization to explain what war is really like from a soldier's perspective.
The author uses characterization to make the reader understand what what war is like for a soldier. An example of characterization used in the text would be ‘ He became bitten by remorse.” This proves that the author uses characterization to show what a soldier’s feeling during a war were. The soldier felt remorseful when he shot the man down on the roof. Sice characterization is used to describe a character's inner feelings and the quote shows the soldier’s feeling, it proves that the author uses characterization. Another instance where the author illustrates characterization was when the soldier was curious of who he shot, as it states in the text, “He felt a sudden curiosity as to whom he had killed.” This proves that when a soldier kills someone they feel curious of who they killed. Curiosity is a character’s trait therefore classified as characterization. Throughout the whole story the author use characterization to explain what war is like for a …show more content…
soldier. The author’s purposes were different because they were told from different points of view.
While “Bloody Sunday” was told from the perspective of people who were affected by war, “The Sniper’ was told from the perspective of a soldier. For example in “Bloody Sunday’” they were talking about how people died because of the war but they didn't experience it first hand, as it states in the song, “There’s many lost but tell me who has one.” This quote demonstrates how many people have died from war and although many people were affected by it they were not the ones who actually died in the war or fought in it. While in “The Sniper” it showed someone who was directly affected by the war, as the author states “ Then when the smoke cleared, he peered across and uttered a cry of joy. His enemy had been hit.” The soldier knew what it was really like to be in the war and he also killed people during it. THe people in the song however were not directly affected by the war. The two authors had each text written from different points of view causing them to be
different. The purpose of “Bloody Sunday” by U2 was to explain the horrific events caused by war while in “The Sniper” written by liam O’Flaherty was to explain what war is like from a soldier’s point of view. These two texts are different because they were both told from different perspective. But they did something to do with violence and they were both inspired by the Irish Civil War. This can give you a sense of wow people can basically write about the same thing but have different opinions and perspectives on it. Perhaps everything can be interpreted in this way. Maybe if we all realized this we could all accept everyone’s opinion.
Imagery is one of the components that were used by Edwards to make his story more persuasive. As the short story begins, the first sentence was an example of imagery. Edwards wrote when men are on Gods hands and they could fall to hell. natural men are held in the hands of God, over the pit of hell Knowing that you might fall into hell at any moment should scare you. God decided to save you until he wants to let you fall into an eternity of burning flames. Another example of imagery is when he talks abo...
Characterization is used to help along the point giving us a better understanding of the main character. In the start of on the sidewalk bleeding the author uses characterization to flesh out Andy and give some of his aspirations. One of those aspirations is his girlfriend Laura he believes that “someday he would marry laura someday” (Hunter 2). First off this quote gives one of the symbols of the story. Second, this shows that Andy wants to have a life past the royals. The author also uses characterization to describe the nature of labels. A boy and a girl couple stumble upon Andy
Wiesel uses imagery to describe genocide. He witnessed a really traumatized hanging and he uses imagery to tell how he is really feeling. “That night the soup tasted of corpses” (Wiesel 62) Another way Wiesel uses imagery in night is when he describes the readers in chapter 4 how the man was very weak.
Imagery is used by many authors as a crucial element of character development. These authors draw parallels between the imagery in their stories and the main characters' thoughts and feelings. Through intense imagery, non-human elements such as the natural environment, animals, and inanimate objects are brought to life with characteristics that match those of the characters involved.
Finally, Francisco Jimenez uses characterization to display the different aspects of all the characters during this time. “‘Andale, Panchito,’ Roberto yelled out, banging his shovel on the ground. ‘You can sleep tomorrow when we go home.’” This is characterization because it shows how Roberto is a hard worker and he is willing to persevere through
One on the differences is that The Sniper takes place in Dublin, Ireland and the story Ambush is in Khe Vietnam. Another difference between the two short stories is that The Sniper takes place on a rooftop near O’ Connell bridge and Ambush takes place in the bushes beside a winding path. “ On a rooftop near O’Connell bridge a republican sniper lay watching.” The Sniper takes place in 1921 and Ambush takes place in the Vietnam war sometime between 1962 and 1972. The two short stories are similar because they both take place at night but Ambush is a foggy, hot night and The Sniper is a dark cold night.
Imagery is when the author presents a mental image through descriptive words. One prime example of imagery that the author uses is in paragraph 3; where she tells of a moment between a man and a woman. In this narration she states the time, year, outfit of each character described, and what the female character was doing. These details might come across as irrelevant, or unnecessary, but this is Didions way of showing what the blueprint of notebook it. Using imagery reinforces the foundation of the essay, and what the essay’s mission was.
An example of imagery used in chapter 22 is when Tim O'Brien is describing a Vietnam village along the China Sea. He states, "It was all wreckage. I remember the smell of burnt straw; I remember broken fences and torn-up trees and heaps of stone and brick and pottery. The place was deserted--no people, no animals--and the only confirmed kill was an old man who lay face-up near a pigpen at the center of the village." His vivid description allows me to see the village and all it's
Characterization is the process by which the author reveal the personality of a character. Characterization can be created in two different ways: direct and indirect characterization. Direct characterization is when the author tells the readers what a character is like. Indirect characterization is based on clues from the story, the reader decides what a character is like. Indirect characterization can come from what the character says/does, what the character thinks, what others say about the character, and the character’s physical appearance.
Imagery has been used by William Faulkner to create parallels that strengthen the themes of the story. The imagery is used as a tool to appeal to the reader to convey the authors purpose.
Another example of imagery that is strong is, “I look in the mirror and hold up my mangled hand, only the baby finger left, sticking straight up, I know it’s the wrong goddamned finger, but fuck you all anyway.” (Smith) Patricia uses imagery here perfectly. The use of descriptive words like mangled and baby, add the image of a man just staring into a mirror saying, “Fuck the world” and even though he does not have the right finger to do it he still uses it to replace the middle finger he lost.
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton proves the point that violence can be justified if necessary. To inflict change in their lives people often fight with violence instead of peace to evoke change. The world strives for change everyday whether or not you like it. How the people create a change in society whether they use peace or war, it is up to them to decide how to modify our ever changing world. Violence and fight between the Socs and Greasers tells us that both can be justified if it inflicts positive change in society. ‘
Imagery is a key part of any poem or literary piece and creates an illustration in the mind of the reader by using descriptive and vivid language. Olds creates a vibrant mental picture of the couple’s surroundings, “the red tiles glinting like bent plates of blood/ the
The text defines characterization as, “the author’s presentation and development of the traits of the characters.” (WEAL, 60) It is important to understand that characters are the heart of a book and good characterization is essential in order to make them real to the reader. Imagine for a moment, reading a book and having a hard time to connect with any of the characters, this would instantly make the reader lose interest in the story. In order to keep the reader’s hooked, it is vital for the author to not only create but also develop the character and make it easily relatable to the audience. The character Maude from the book “Harold & Maude” by the author Colin Higgins definitely satisfies this criteria. Higgins
Characterization has been established as an important part of literature as it allows authors to fully develop characters’ personalities, allowing readers to understand the characters and their actions. In the poem Judith, the author uses adjective phrases to describe Judith and Holofernes’ personalities. The diverse contrast in their nature highlights the heroic qualities in Judith, which teach the reader to have faith in God, as that is where her courage and strength stems from. Therefore, characterization can further be used as a technique to establish major themes in a work of
