American Sniper Movie Review
(Writing for publication)
American Sniper is a movie about Chris Kyle and his 4 tours of the Iraq War, with lead actors Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, produced by Clint Eastwood.
The movie starts with an agonising scene where Chris is looking down his scope somewhere in Iraq and sees a mother handing a grenade to her child who starts running towards fellow soldiers. With no supporting vision his commanders say it’s his choice. Just before his decision Eastwood cuts back to Chris as a boy, hunting with his father, with little words needed you can tell this scene has a large impact on Chris.
After the first scene the movie then begins the slow development of Chris’s 4 tours of the Iraq war. Chris lived by the Navy SEAL creed of “Leave No Man Behind”, and he knows his saving lives by taking a life but he hates the enemy so much that he found killing them easy. After his first 2 tours Chris hated war in general, but he was enjoying himself too much to leave. In between his tours at home he worries a lot about the men he’s not saving. Many people who have reviewed this think American Sniper is glorifying war, but I don’t believe it is. During the movie Chris got called a Hero and a

Many people have stated in reviews around the globe that American Sniper is glorifying war. This movie I feel is far from glorifying, if anything it’s more of an anti-war movie. The film shows Chris Kyle serving his 4 tours of Iraq, but shows more the mental and physical side of war, what really happens to those brave men and women that actually get sent to war. It shows Chris calling her wife multiple times on missions, one where they get ambushed. It then also shows the time in between tours at home and how his condition worsens. This movie I think would be reassuring for war veterans that have been suffering because this movie really shows how horrible war is, and how it should not be glorified at such a

“Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, it’s what’s inside counts” This quote reminds people about how they should not judge other people from the outside but look deep into their true personalities. Looking from the appearance and how Chris lives, everyone would assume that Chris is a crazy, foolish person and does everything without thinking. If people try to know more about Chris, they would have different perspective. Chris is intelligent, determined, independent and follows what he believes. He went into the wilderness to escape from the society that tries to suppress him and look for the meaning of life.
The short story “The Sniper”, by Liam O’Flaherty and the poem “The Man He Killed,” by Thomas Hardy both use themes of guilt and regret to emphasize how war negatively affects the soldiers fighting it. In “The Man He Killed”, Hardy’s character, a war veteran, wonders what might have happened had he met the man he killed anywhere other than war. The soldier feels a strong sense of confusion and guilt because he realized the man he killed could have been his friend elsewhere. The veteran’s guilt resembles significant similarity to that of O’Flaherty’s character in “The Sniper”. The main character, a sniper in the Irish civil war, unknowingly kills his brother in a battle. The sniper felt remorse even before recognizing the body. The snipers’ sense
As someone who relates heavily with Chris as a person, It is easy for me to understand Chris’ true character. If you strip a man of all his material possessions, what sets him apart from everyone else? That is the question in which Chris’ motives lie behind. As someone who was well educated and, for lack of a better term, privileged, and intelligent, Chris likely began to question his capability as a person. By stripping down to nothing but his character and his ability, Chris was able to experience his full potential in an unguarded state. In this, it was actually better that he died in the wilderness, for had he emerged in defeat, he would have emerged a broken man. While physically, he may have been totally fine, it is in his spirits that would have been broken. A sense of inability and hopelessness is a greater torture than any physical pain, even
In past history, heroes come in many different facets of life. The military has produced many of these heroes. Chris Kyle a United States Navy SEAL was one of those heroes. Chris grew up in various locations in Texas. His father worked for AT&T as a manager and they moved around frequently. Chris loved to fight as he stated “Somewhere along the way, I started sticking up for younger kids who were being picked on. I felt I had to look out for them. It became my duty. Maybe it began because I was looking for an excuse to fight without getting in trouble” (American Sniper, Chris Kyle, 21).
As we saw earlier, both authors of both stories were born in different places and did many things. “The Sniper” sets in Dublin, Ireland, during a time of a bitter civil war. It was a war between the Republicans, which wanted Ireland to become ...
Chris Kyle is a Navy SEAL that specialized in sniping. He is most known because he is the most lethal sniper in military history. It is also possible people had more sniper kills than him, but one part of being in the military is you must record every confirmed kill, if it is not confirmed as dead it cannot be counted. Chris Kyle is said to have somewhere near 160 confirmed kills. He was known for many other things though too, besides his amount of kills, he is also known for having a strong faith in God. Another thing he was known for among SEALs in particular is his great acts of courage. Chris Kyle also had a servant heart, it ended up tragically killing him on February 2, 2013. Even after he finished his deployments he went back into helping people from the

While he stays at Shallow Creek, his conversation with Vanessa about his views of God shows his perception of the life: he questions how such a brutal God could exist, because Chris has a lot of pain and the world in his mind is not as bright as he appears. As his responses to adversities shape his perceptions, he no longer sees the world as a place full of hopes and he cannot hide his feeling of helplessness anymore, but although he shows his emotions to Vanessa, a thirteen-year-old girl like her cannot give him much help. Chris once again tries to solve his adversities with an unreal solution because he has no one else to talk with. Later in the story he joins the war to seek for other opportunities, however this time he does not only try to escape from the reality, but he also escapes from his nature, because his nature is never a solider: as he reveals on his letter, “[He does not] live inside [his body] anymore”. One day he is sent home from the battlefield because of a mental breakdown; this event marks his total lose of perceptions: insane people do not have perceptions. Since Chris always tries to escape from the reality and never really looks for a real solution to the problems, his perception becomes irreparably
The Green Berets was a movie that continuously encouraged its audience to prolong the Vietnam War. Just as the movie begins, a scene takes place that sets the stage for the rest of the movie. A few reporters asked many Green Berets about their talents with responses listing the many qualifications they had (Green Berets, The). John Wayne was clearly attempting to convince his viewers that the Green Berets were a noble group that deserves praise and support. Furthermore, the entire movie consists of Americans easily defeating Vietnamese soldiers. When John Wayne’s character finds a North Vietnamese soldier pacing the coordinates for an attack, he easily beats him with one punch (Green Berets, The). To an audience, events such as these may sway them to believe Vietnamese victory can easily be achieved. Thirdly, the reporter attempts to be objective. Upon arriving at the camp, he states, “I will tell the people what I saw,” without distorting the truth (Green Berets, The). However, the reality is probably more akin to him twisting the truth without any reason for supporting the war. All things considered, The Green Berets shows a propaganda movie that contrasts sharply with many oth...
"There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful thananything that bleeds. Don 't wait until you break. - Laurell Hamilton" This is oftentimes the sentiment felt by soldiers who have served in active duty and have been witnesses to tragedies that leave them emotionally scarred. The Clint Eastwood directed film, American Sniper is amovie that features the real life tragedy of American soldier, Chris Kyle, who served in theUnited States military as a Navy Seal, which is an elite group (Kenny, 2014 and Treitschke,2015). His story is unique in that he himself suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), but as he worked to recover, he valiantly served again by helping fellow soldiers withPTSD ("Chris Kyle," 2013), and was senselessly gunned
In the movie, Chris Taylor is a young man from a wealthy family, but while in college, chooses to help his country and do his duty in the Vietnam War. He is sent to Vietnam gets put in the 25th Infantry Division. Chris first has some rough times while over there. He gets bitten by ants while traveling through the jungle, and gets blamed for falling asleep while he was on watch. The North Vietnamese tried and were unsuccessful at ambushing them. However, it was not Chris’s fault (It was a soldier named Junior who fell asleep). Chris starts to miss home after some of these events happen. After being put on light duty, he gets mixed up in what some of the other soldiers were doing to deal with their depression - drugs and alcohol. He also meets some nice people such as King and Big Harold in the process.
Witnesses said that Chris asked people one by one “are you Christian?” If the person answered yes, Chris made them stand up and he would say to them “Good, because you ‘re about to see God in just about one second.” Chris really heated religions, he even went as far as joining a club online. The membership on line was a club for people who “doesn’t like organized religions group”. When this nightmare eventually ended, when Chris was killed in a shootout. He was only 26 years old when all of this took
Police shootings occur all over the world but are a huge problem within the United States. We continue to hear more and more about them. These shootings are making headlines. Front page news it seems almost weekly. All the shootings go one of two ways. Either a Police Officer has been shot or a Police Officer has shot a citizen, but either way the final result is death. Whether an Officer has been shot or an Officer has shot someone these cases seem to be related to one thing, fear. People in today’s society feel as though they can’t trust Police Officers as they are there to hurt and kill them. And Police Officers feel as though they are in danger of doing their everyday duties because people see them as the “bad guys” and want to hurt or kill them. Yes, police brutality and racism still exist, but not all cops are bad. Yes there are still bad citizens in this world that want to kill and harm others, but not all citizens are bad. People seem to react to these shootings by rioting quickly after a police officer has shot and killed someone without
Novelist and short story writer, Liam O’Flaherty grew up in a village on the western coast of Ireland. He was a good student when he was young, and when he grew older, he enlisted in the British Army. Later, after enlisting in the army, he began to write stories while he was in the war. Many of Liam O’Flaherty’s short stories about war, have become very popular throughout the world. One of his greatest, most popular stories, “The Sniper” has some of O’Flaherty’s experiences of being in the war. The short story, “The Sniper”, was published in the London paper, The New Leader, on January 12, 1923. Liam O’Flaherty was a World War I veteran. He wrote most of his stories while in the war. The stories he wrote, became very popular after the
