“The Sniper” and “The Most Dangerous” Game are both different stories, written by different authors. Liam O’Flaherty is the author of “The Sniper”. He was born on one of Ireland’s Aran Islands, in a large family. Since the Aran Islands have a tradition of oral storytelling, Liam O’Flaherty’s house was full of different kinds of stories. He also wrote about Irish peasant life and captured the struggles of the Irish Civil War. His best known novel is “The Informal”, and it talks about a betrayal set during the Irish Troubles. The author of “The Most Dangerous Game” is Richard Connell. Richard Connell is an American author and journalist, who wrote a lot of short stories and few novels. His short stories appeared in the Saturday Evening Post and Collier's Weekly. While he was still in high school, Richard Connell was hired as the city editor for sixteen dollars a week. He studied college at Georgetown University, while working as a secretary for his father, who had been elected to Congress. After his father’s death, he moved to Harvard, and started writing for two college newspapers. After graduating, he transferred to New York, but he also left a brief stint in the army during World War |. After that, he moved to Los Angeles and began to write screenplays for major Hollywood movie studios. Richard Connell’s most famous story is “The Most Dangerous Game”, which is still widely read, even nowadays. It has inspired many movies and it’s probably the most frequently anthologized American story. As we saw earlier, both authors of both stories were born in different places and did many things. “The Sniper” sets in Dublin, Ireland, during a time of a bitter civil war. It was a war between the Republicans, which wanted Ireland to become ... ... middle of paper ... ...rom the island, and then appearing right before his eyes at General Zaroff’s room. Rainsford had so many smart ideas and plans as well as the sniper. In both stories, people died. In “The Sniper”, the old woman, and the man she informed, as well as the sniper’s brother were killed. While in “The Most Dangerous Game”, Ivan and General Zaroff died. We compared the settings, characters, and authors of both stories, but we still didn’t compare between the types of writing both stories are. “The Sniper” was a descriptive writing, because it described the mood, setting, and characters of the story. “The Most Dangerous Game” also described the mood, setting, and characters of the story. This means that both stories are descriptive writings. Both stories are one of a kind and deserve to be read. They share both common and uncommon ideas, but in the end, both are nice.
The most dangerous game began as a sport for one man. His name is Sanger Rainsford. In Richard Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford, an avid hunter, is lost at sea, stranded on “Ship-Trap” Island-every sailor’s worst nightmare. Rainsford goes through a series of events that prove to be life-altering. Even though Sanger Rainsford went through many trials and tribulations, he never lost his intelligence, composure, or his bravery.
The conflicts in both story's end very different message; "I sent a man up five years ago for murder. He was so poised to hang, nut pup north they commuted it to his life. Now his free - I don't know how. Anyways, it looks like he's coming back." ( formen 295) Those are the words of will khan. The conflict in high noon is frank Miller is loose and is coming back to get revenge on Khan for sending him to jail. However in "The Most Dangerous Game" the story is ending out a different conflict. "It's a game you see." Zaroff is a like to hunt humans for fun and it's a game to him. Zaroff is a very skilled hunter that has gotten tired of hunting animals because he says that their not challenging to hunt. So he turns to humans to hunt for his amusement.
Those similarities and differences can be found anywhere when comparing and contrasting, especially when it is over two genres with a main topic. In the case of The Most Dangerous Game, the short story was more descriptive, informative, and did not stray far from the central theme of everything has feelings no matter what someone may think. “You have one the game.” Rainsford did not smile. “I am still a beast at
In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game”, he uses several literary devices to keep the reader interested. During Rainsfords journey to and through the island of General Zaroff he partakes in an adventurous journey filled with mystery, suspense, and dilemma. These devices are used to keep the reader interested throughout the story.
One on the differences is that The Sniper takes place in Dublin, Ireland and the story Ambush is in Khe Vietnam. Another difference between the two short stories is that The Sniper takes place on a rooftop near O’ Connell bridge and Ambush takes place in the bushes beside a winding path. “ On a rooftop near O’Connell bridge a republican sniper lay watching.” The Sniper takes place in 1921 and Ambush takes place in the Vietnam war sometime between 1962 and 1972. The two short stories are similar because they both take place at night but Ambush is a foggy, hot night and The Sniper is a dark cold night.
“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell was published in 1924, 6 years after WW1. He served in WW1 and was a writer and editor before that. Around 1924 there were big events that might have caused him to write this story. WW1 ended, the Russian Revolution was happening, and big game hunting in Europe was popular. This story is a modernism piece because a modernism story it has no clear conclusion or just capturing the moments in detail. Connell’s story had an untrustworthy authority figures, movement away from moral goodness, an allegory, and an ambiguous ending. Those are all characteristics of a modernist story.
The basic plot of the story is based during an evening within the Irish civil wars. It tells of a republican sniper sitting on a rooftop and neutralising enemy units as the cross a bridge. When a free-states sniper shows himself on an opposite roof they wage a fierce and innovative war to see who would end up the better. Eventually the republican sniper gains the upper hand and after taking a bullet in the arm destroys the worthy opponent. After a curious inspection to the identity of the enemy sniper he finds himself looking into the eyes of his dead brother.
"Get ready, General Zaroff," (Connell) states Rainsford as he is about to fight the General. "The Most Dangerous Game" is an adventurous story, written by one of the greatest American Literature authors. The story includes all the works: a detailed setting, an intriguing point of view, an interesting conflict, a protagonist and antagonist, a theme that shines throughout the story, and a mysterious twist at the end. ...d if they were the source of the evenings previous gunshots. The Ultimate anticipation was in if Rainsford after choosing to be hunted could actually survive the hunt and if so would The General hold up his end of the bargain and allow Rainsford the gallantry of being unconstrained. It would have been interesting to know if Rainsford had actually been freed and if so had he spoke of his travels to authorities or any one in fact.
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the protagonist (Rainsford) struggled with the actions of the antagonist (General Zaroff) throughout his adventure. The images used to describe the island, deadly swamp, and castle show that it is inhabited and a dangerous place with the use of setting, imagery, and the tone Connell shows Rainsford’s difficulties, persistence, and triumph to the audience. By using these key aspects, Connell makes important connections to the theme while alluding to hunting as the main concept of this whole adventure.
“The Most Dangerous Game” gives a reader a sense that there is a fun game being played, that might be dangerous to the people who play it. In the story, it turns out that the game is not a fun game, but it turns out to be a game between life and death. General Zaroff tells Rainsford, “[y]ou’ll find this game worth playing…the stake is not without value” (18). By saying this, the value that is at stake is the life of the individual that it involves. Anything that involves risking a life is not a game to most people, which makes it ironic how Zaroff calls it simply a game. Also, the word game is used to describe the size of an animal that is being hunted. Richard Connell titles the game in this story as “The Most Dangerous” (8). Richard uses verbal irony when he writes this title. If someone is hunting the most dangerous game, then that hunter’s life is in the most danger when he hunts that
Would you rather be living in a town with a murderer and his gang on the loose or be on an island with a man who kills people for his own enjoyment? In both the film and the text, the themes are similar; however, the
