Roger Goodell has the hottest seat for his job in the country right now. The NFL has turned into a hilarious punchline, and that’s not where this league should be headed. Goodell’s central ethical issue was his overly self-centered thinking. He did not want to be dragged down for an issue that Ray Rice brought up; but now, he is going down hard. He failed to use the ethical principles of honesty, accountability, integrity, and leadership. He was dishonest in multiple occurrences, most notably when he said that the NFL never received TMZ’s video. Of course, according to the Associated Press, Goodell had the video since April. Honesty and accountability fall hand in hand; and with his streak of dishonesty, he has lost all accountability. Roger Goodell has made himself a very tough person to vouch for. Goodell showed no integrity as he could not match his thoughts and his words. Instead, during his only live public appearance since the start of Rice’s issue, Goodell decided to read off of a script. Goodell’s leadership is has never seen a tougher match than this case. He has always been a good leader, but a good leader does not shy from cameras during a crisis point in the way that he has been about the Rice case. Roger Goodell had a decent stint as NFL Commissioner, but after his public relations meltdown in dealing with case after case in the NFL, it is time for him to go. …show more content…
Some people believe that playing in the NFL is a privilege, which it surely is; but it is also a job and a way of life for these men.
What Ray Rice did to his wife was incredibly unethical, but the fact that the NFL came in and did what they did to Rice by suspending him indefinitely could also be considered unethical. No employee of any normal company would lose their job or be suspended indefinitely for domestic abuse. Maybe that person gets suspended if a video surfaces showing the domestic abuse; but even then, it is highly
doubtful. No matter what happens with Rice in this case, the fact of the matter is that athletes and celebrities, especially in a world with huge spotlights on them, are held at a much higher standard than everyone else. These guys are role models and childhood heroes, not wife-beaters, child-beaters, and alcoholics. The NFL needs to come down harder on their athletes, especially when they are trying to transform their public relations image. Get Roger Goodell out, keep Ray Rice out, and try to make this game of heroes, not villains.
Ray Rice a former NFL running back who played for the Baltimore Ravens was caught brutally smacking his fiancee over, leaving her blacked out on the floor of a casino elevator taking place in Atlantic City. The footage leaked out world wide and the public created huge controversy over the coverage that continuously played a numerous of times on major news networks. Rice who was cut from the Ravens and suspended from the NFL after the release of the show down is now an unsigned free agent, searching for hope. Through shocking evidence and a glimpse into a professional football players life, I aim to examine how media created an entertainment brand out of the countless amount of times the video was aired, how the NFL handled the scandal, and how Rice strives to regain his identity.
News of Brady's suspension follows the release Wednesday of a 243-page report that was commissioned by the NFL. It cited evidence from scientific studies to phone records and concluded that "it is more probable than not that New England Patriots personnel ... were involved in a deliberate effort to circumvent the rules." …league's required levels unearthed text messages and other communications between two of the team's employees, who joked about Brady's preference for underinflated footballs. (Smith) This more likely shows that Brady had no idea about the Deflation and it was the employees that deflated the
Even though athletes get special treatment they never think about how them getting off easy can back fire. The Ray Rice case is a prime example of how it was a downfall in their career. Rice got released from the Baltimore ravens and since then he has not play football. The NFL suspended him indefinitely, but it was later lifted because he did not lie to the commissioner about the domestic violence case. He was free to play again, but no team signed him because it was going to come with a ton of backlash and no team wanted to deal with that because it would have been a distraction to the team. Also, many people lost respect for Rice for putting his hands on a women. No one would look at him the same anymore. He has yet to sign with any team since the incident took
The NFL in particular is known for its focus on order, power and control, where operations are anonymous and interchangeable. With that players and employees are none else than compliant with league regulations. In this case Colin Kaepernick’s protest had the ability to go against the grain and break the façade of being afraid to voice his opinions. Today’s generation has become very open to sharing their opinions on social issues and Kapernick’s protest is just an addition. This protest instantly became political because of the fact that police brutality and racial is becoming a persistently uncomfortable issue that our country is facing. Every single there is something new about citizens being killed by the police for no reason, including recent cases such as Philando Castle and Terence Crutcher. Such issues will not be resolved until our society stands against it as a whole. It takes public figures such as Colin Kaepernick to stand with citizens to bring awareness about these issues in order to force change in the government and society. Whether industry leaders like it or not, I believe that such protest will continue to grow. Athletes and entertainers will continue to voice their opinions about social issues until changes come into effect.
In a way tom Brady shouldn’t be punished because he was not caught inAction deflating the ball he was just catching the heat because he was theCaptain of the team and he hast to be a role model and the media wanted
There is absolutely no excuse for abuse, no matter how much money a company obtains from said actions. The signs of torture are inevitable, such as drooping dorsal fins in
The NFL has multiple reasons for maintaining a tough drug policy. Former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle stated that serious health problems occur for players who abuse drugs. Additionally, since the NFL is a billion dollar business, they have an interest in maximizing productivity from its players and alcohol abuse hinders that. It says in the Marquette Sport Law Journal, “The league has an interest in protecting the safety of all players” (Sisson and Trexell 11). Players who abuse alcohol or any drug for that matter put themselves and other players at risk. In 2012, Dallas Cowboy defensive tackle Josh Brent killed his teammate while driving under the influence of alcohol. He was released by the team three weeks after the incident and does not play in the NFL anymore. There are numerous incidents of players getting into trouble because of alcohol.
In 2002 former attorneys Cyrus Mehri and Johnnie Cochran co-wrote a particularly troublesome report, “Black Coaches in the National Football League: Superior Performance, Inferior Opportunities.” The report led to the development of a diversity committee by then NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue. The Rooney Rule requires NFL teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operations. The rule was established in 2003 and is named for Pittsburgh Steelers’ owner, Dan Rooney. Rooney serves the chairman of the league’s diversity committee. The Rooney family has long been viewed as inspiration as the Steelers organization has a long history of giving African-Americans opportunities to serve in leadership roles. The rule was established to ensure minority coaches, specifically African-Americans were considered for high-level coaching positions (Cohn 2013).
A penalty flag is down for a growing number of professional athletes. Some, accused of domestic violence, others charged with assault. What has caused this sudden increase in domestic violence by professional athletes? Nothing. There has not been any increase at all. Professional athletes have been beating and abusing women for a long, long time. Years ago, a lady called 911 and said that her husband was beating her. She wanted to file a report, but then asked the dispatcher if it was going to be in the paper the next day. When the dispatcher did not reply, the woman changes her mind about the report and hangs up (Cart). The woman was Sun Bonds, wife of professional athlete, Barry Bonds. Like the wives of other famous players, she was a victim of spousal abuse. Professional athletes are praised as heroes for what they do on the playing field, but what they do off the field is NEVER mentioned. As a very disappointed sports fan, I want to draw attention to the domestic violence cases that involve athletes.
It's nothing new for the National Football League's players to be abusing anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. Drug abuse in the league has recently focused around recreational drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol. The newest drug being abused is painkillers. The commissioner and his personal need to change their policies. Will they wait until many more players start to die before they tighten up their drug policies? The National Football League (NFL) can stop most of these drug problems by having more random drug tests given, enforcing stricter punishments when players are caught using drugs, and requiring every team to educate its players annually on the effects and consequences of all drugs.
It’s very obvious that most of these players are cheating and the NCAA and the NFL act like everything is just fine. They either do hardcore testing or don’t do it all.
Sexual abuse by athletes is evident at every level, from high school team members to professional players. In the last decade, some of the most noted athletes in big league sports have been accused of sexually abusing or attacking women. In many cases, however, the woman decided not to bring it to public trial, and charges were dropped:
For a man in his position, Sterling has the ability to be an influence, and enough money to effect communities around him. Hence he should not have put himself in a situation like this as it could hurt a lot of people. Therefore, the banning of Donald Sterling by the NBA, with the help of commissioner Adam Silver, the collective agreement of team owners, and the voice of the players, was ethically adequate since it delivered the best punishment possible.
...ure tends to be the reason for the misconduct, then changing it is an important aspect. Finally, a department needs ethical leadership. If strict and fair discipline is involved, then potential misconduct is deterred from view (Pollock, 2012).
In 2010 Roethlisberger faced the same allegations by a Georgia college student. He was never charged with the crime, only accused and handing the matter in civil court for an undisclosed amount. In America, are innocent until proven guilty and being accused does not prove guilt; but guilty is exactly what Aaron Hernandez was, being convicted of the worse crime there is, murder! Less than a year after signing a $40 million contract with the New England Patriots, Aaron was charged with first-degree murder. The Patriots stood behind him until he was actually arrested; because two hours after that, the Patriots released him from the team. There is absolutely no way you can come back from a murder conviction. One because you will be behind bars and 2, the NFL would surly ban you. You cannot have a murderer disgracing your league. That is why this question poses a yes and no answer, because some crimes don’t hold the weight as others. However, repeat offenders who don’t learn their lesson the first time or even the second deserve harsher penalties.
