Nyshon Zaragoza Jour 371 4/1/2016 Ray Rice and the Scandalous Episode Ray Rice a former NFL running back who played for the Baltimore Ravens was caught brutally smacking his fiancee over, leaving her blacked out on the floor of a casino elevator taking place in Atlantic City. The footage leaked out world wide and the public created huge controversy over the coverage that continuously played a numerous of times on major news networks. Rice who was cut from the Ravens and suspended from the NFL after the release of the show down is now an unsigned free agent, searching for hope. Through shocking evidence and a glimpse into a professional football players life, I aim to examine how media created an entertainment brand out of the countless amount of times the video was aired, how the NFL handled the scandal, and how Rice strives to regain his identity. The break down was inescapable after the out break of the leading sports scandal was delivered to the world. According to Restraint vs. Slow- Mo Replay, The AP reported that,” Six major networks- CNN, NBC, ABC, ESPN, Fox News and Fox Sports said they would pull the plug on showing the video, or tone down the reruns.” The video increasingly became popular universal, showing no remorse for the victims included in the …show more content…
description. TMZ later released a second video that showed Rice and his fiancee at the time behind head cuffs kissing after the incident. Ray Rice’s fiancee Janay Palmer suffered terminal embarrassment because this video was aired a various amount of times. According to Media Matters, “ A review of CNN's coverage revealed that the network played video of Rice hitting his then-fiancée a total of 13 times, including slow-motion replays, during The Situation Room and Erin Burnett OutFront. Strife began as the argument on whether or not news companies were airing it for there own benefit or entertainment emerged. Some news networks promised to limit the amount of times they display the video. After Fox News broke there agreement to not air the video again unless it informs the public about domestic violence, they received harsh judgments and criticized as a progressional news network. Restraint vs. Slow-Mo Replay: Rice Video Coverage Runs the Gamut states, “Online news coverage of the violent video has run the gamut, with some news coverage organization exercising more restraint than others. Some websites chose to show only and edited version while others ran all three minutes and 34 seconds of the video.” While there were some news companies that showed every detail of the video to the public, there were others who only showed the most important details that pointed out the main details of the coverage. Although the video expressed to the public how domestic violence is a problem in the United States, the public“AJR reviewed how 18 news sites covered the video of Ray Rice assaulting his fiancee and found 13 either showed the video or linked to it, while five opted not to include the video in their web coverage at all.” A lot of these news companies didn't show compassion for there bystanders. There are victims that have survived domestic violence and by clicking on one of these news websites unaware of what there going to see are presented with a video of a women against her will. Children are young and there brains aren't fully equipped to understand things that they see. A child can come across this video on the internet and can be either effected by what’s going on or will let the the video influence them that domestic violence is okay. These news sites should have questioned there decisions on whether or not posting the video would be ethical and what could have they done to tone down the public grief. Also creating a link for viewers to proceed to if they were mature enough to watch the video would have been more professional. These news companies treated Janay Rice as a puppet by progressively displaying the video. How far will a news company over step there boundaries to please the public? Is there main focus targeting the public? The Columbia Journalism Review reviews,” What embedding the Ray Rice video reveals about news judgment. Some media outlets run graphic images of domestic violence.” The Classical’ stated,” USA Today, the New York Times, the Washington Post, SB Nation, the Boston Globe, ESPN and the Huffington Post did not provide any information about the epidemic domestic violence, none of them provided a link to a website with more information on how to help others who are struggling through abusive relationships.” Every single one of these news companies had the video posted on there websites of Janay Rice blacked out from a malicious punch in the face. These news sites helped enrage the content of the story and did not provide awareness to the community on the wrong doing taking place in the video. These news stations impelled the public and brought forth attention to there viewers, but they did not educate the public on the main story and how domestic violence is dangerous. I believe that these companies strived to fight for the amount of views and high ratings they were going to receive, instead of focusing on the bigger picture of the story. TMZ fought for there ratings and surely did they receive the most views for the blatant coverage they provided to the public. Roy Peter Clark, a journalist from the Poynter magazine, published an article,”Ray Rice video sparks ethics questions.”Roy Clark states,” argues that such violent videos need to be made public because they create the public outrage and outcry that pierces the shield of even such impenetrable institutions of the NFL.” He created his own take on the case study and how we would have handled the situation as a professional journalists. “If the tape from inside the elevator was made available to me, I would view it, test its authenticity, take into consideration the biases and interests of the source. After initial publication, I would discontinue publication, even if other news organizations continued to make it available. This is an attempt, however insufficient, to minimize additional harm that may come to the victim and those closest to her.” This is what the news stations should have examined before they made the mistake of escalating the harm of the story. News stations should observe and understand that every individual reacts to every situation differently. There are people with a wide range of ethnicities, genders and class that may be offended by the video. Personally I would assume that these news stations that openly posted the coverage worldwide are judgmental and bias. Although I don't agree with the actions taken place, news stations should want to reduce harm instead of basing there own opinions off of the description presented. The NFL surely did avoid the damage taken place to Ray Rice. The National Football Association played a major role in this media scandal. The NFL suspended Ray Rice for the first two games of the season and fined him for the incident that took place in the elevator. Moments later fans created a huge stand against Ray Rice on how the league witnessed the video but gave Rice a sympathetic penalty. Many football fans were furious that the commissioner allowed this action to take place. People were enraged that the NFL did not stand against the domestic violence case but instead allowed Ray Rice too become a free man. The NFL stated that they did not watch the second release video posted by TMZ and attempted to apologize to the world for there effortless actions. According to AdWeek, “NFL commissioner Robert Goodell admitted the league "(fell) short of its goals" when it addressed the Rice situation. The NFL then changed its policy so that any first case of domestic violence would result in an immediate six-game suspension. Another incident would be subject to a ban from the NFL, and the player would not be able to apply for reinstatement until after a year.” Shortly after Rice was suspended from the NFL and now he remains a free agent. This incident connects to the audience and the industry because domestic violence is a major deal breaker. Many football fans stand against the act of violent approaches. The fact that the NFL immediately gave him a two day suspension to begin with, shocked fans all around the world. People who commit acts of domestic violence are immediately shut away in prison, but a professional running back is given the token to success. Rice still fights to rebuild his brand and make his name in good standing. Ray Rice’s public relations firm strives to rebuild his identity as a football player due to the consequences that unfolded. With the help of press conferences and social media, Rice urges that he isn't a bad person and apologizes to the public. Rice’s PR firm is working to gain his integrity and respect back through emotion and compassion. Ray Rice and his wife opened out to the public discussing the issue taken place. Rices public relations crew insisted him and his family to take pictures portraying as a happy family. There were photos that leaked out that showed him and his wife holding hands and posing happily ever after with there young daughter Rayven. According to NBC news today Rice stated, “I took full responsibility for everything that I did, and the only thing I can hope for and wish for is a second chance.” Rice hopes to pursue his career in football and desires to regain his existence back through the public eye. The Ray Rice scandal serves as a significant example in the relationship between sports and media.
Media displays how sports scandals are identified and how the audience perceives the disgrace. The media study triangle plays a major role in this content because I am able to first hand determine how scandals such as the Ray Rice incident has an influence on culture and values. Media analyzes the story being constructed and the views of the overall story and culture may influence your thoughts on a scandal. Media plays a major role in the connotation of a scandal, especially the Ray Rice attack. As a viewer the NFL isn't always the most honest network, they rely on media to patch up there
misconceptions.
Intro: In 1946 two members of the New York Giants were found associating with gamblers, trying to fix the NFL Championship Game. These members were suspended and in 1947 the NFL introduced their form of prevention, the injury report (Merritt). Every week NFL coaches have to list their injured players on the NFL Injury Report. Each player has to be listed as either “doubtful,” “questionable,” or “probable” to play that weekend. What a lot of people don’t know is that an ample amount of teams are lying on these reports. By skewing the truth on their player’s injuries it gives that team an advantage. Whether the coaches are putting healthy players on the list, injured players not on the list, or just lying about the severity of the injury, it is all affecting the teams and the fans. I have addressed the problems with the NFL injury report and focused my research on the integrity of the teams and their purpose for lying, how much lying is really going on, and the link between the injury report, the NFL, and gambling.
Even though athletes get special treatment they never think about how them getting off easy can back fire. The Ray Rice case is a prime example of how it was a downfall in their career. Rice got released from the Baltimore ravens and since then he has not play football. The NFL suspended him indefinitely, but it was later lifted because he did not lie to the commissioner about the domestic violence case. He was free to play again, but no team signed him because it was going to come with a ton of backlash and no team wanted to deal with that because it would have been a distraction to the team. Also, many people lost respect for Rice for putting his hands on a women. No one would look at him the same anymore. He has yet to sign with any team since the incident took
Overcoming the past and extreme obstacles is nothing new to Ray Lewis. His past is filled with dark secrets that not just anyone could forget; therefore, he is my idol. Lewis’s legacy will be tainted by the events of January 31, 2000, for some. Early that morning in Atlanta, a brawl broke out, two were found dead, and Lewis, along with two others, was charged with murder the next day. Ray Lewis was charged for a murder in a bar. Ray Lewis was going through hard time during this innocent and his career. Lewis pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and Superior Court Judge Alice D. Bonner sentenced Lewis to 12 months' probation, the maximum sentence for a first-time o...
This research paper will determine whether professional athletes deserve a second chance to play in professional sports after inappropriate behaviors. Professional athletes are considered idols and are often held to higher standards. Society has become concerned with so many of today’s athletes making the evening news for their unsuitable behaviors.
A great deal of people viewed Simpson as a role model and someone they desired to be. Not for one second did any of those people even think about the thought of a man that “has it all” being on trial for murder. When most people view celebrities like Simpson, they imagine them with no flaws, but they only observe a glimpse of the person’s life. Some would say a majority of Americans prefer watching someone else’s life than pursuing their own, some Americans would even say that they have an infatuation with celebrities.
Ray Rice was a NFL player who was seen on a video footage punching his fiancee, Janay Palmer, in the face and dragging her unconscious body out of the elevator. Rice was terminated by the Baltimore Ravens after the video was released to the public. He was arrested and indicted for third degree aggravated assault. Until this day no NFL teams are interested in allowing him on the team because of his domestic violence incident. Just as the Ray Rice, Martin was found guilty and charged with reckless endangerment. This domestic violence case prove the NCVS statistics correct because the demographics are similar: an African American woman, mid 30s, punched in the face by her fiancee. Also, it shows that this type of crime is relevant in the United States. Especially if it was ripped from the headlines and used in a popular crime television
In the book entitled Out of Their League, David Meggyesy describes his life as a football player from high school through his days with the St. Louis Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL). Born in 1941, Meggyesy was raised in a low-income household in Solon, Ohio. Like many athletes from impoverished backgrounds, he was able to use the game of football to better himself though both a full scholarship to Syracuse University and financial stability with the Cardinals. During his career, however, Meggyesy became increasingly disillusioned with the game of football and how its athletes were subject to tremendous physical and psychological turmoil from those in power—namely the coaches and the NFL team owners. He began to see the game of football from a conflict theorist point of view. This is the belief that sport is an opiate used to benefit those in power through the exploitation of athletes which enables those such as coaches and team owners to maintain their power and privilege in society. (Coakley, 1998) Meggyesy's growing disenchantment with football and adoption of a conflict theorist point of view led him to retire from the Cardinals in 1969.
Still Sees No Evil." was the biggest of the three articles. This is because, this articles explores the truth about how serious the NFL is about domestic violence, which is not pretty. The fact that the NFL only suspended Josh Brown for one game makes me wonder what the NFL’s proitories are, obviously not justice. I am also astonished that the NFL sent two people they considered at random to go ask for documents (Macur). Does this show that the NFL is so lazy during the investigation that they do not even care about the victim? Although the league made a new policy and reopened brown’s case, I do not believe it is bulletproof. Many other players are getting an advantage when it comes to the criminal justice system. Hopefully, by spreading the word, there will be less and fewer victims when it comes to domestic violence, especially in the
Even though football players are aware of the dangers the game can bring upon them, they take part despite it. The passion, the joy it creates; for professionals it’s also the devoted fans and compensation they receive is what keeps the players motivated. Today players are much bigger, faster, smarter, bigger, better. The game is more physical. The sport has never been so competitive. The popularity has reached new peaks, as much that the NFL has thoughts of moving a team to London, England. Additionally, Super Bowl XLVII (47) was one of the most watched television events of all time; an astonishing 108.4 million viewers (The Associated Press). Fans worship their teams and love to see big hits. Football is a contact sport; injuries are no doubtingly part of it. Concussions are one of the many detriments caused by the ruthlessness, but one of the few with perpetual effects: consequence of the brutality.
When Indiana Pacer, Ron Artest, charged into the stands with forty-five seconds remaining in a NBA game, last November, between the Pacers and the Detroit Pistons, the shock waves reverberated immediately. Video clips showed Artest pummeling Pistons fans with his fists. Replays also revealed that it was fans, throwing a cup of beer at Artest, which sent the NBA superstar on his rampage. It was one of the ugliest incidents ever seen in American professional sports. Sports fans and non-sports fans alike witnessed the chaotic outbreak of violence from the serenity of their own living rooms. NBA junkies saw the scene unfold during the game's live broadcast on cable TV. Sports fans caught highlights of the melee on ESPN's SportsCenter. American housewives experienced the outrage as they watched their local ten o'clock evening news. For weeks this basketball brawl was not only headlines news on sports pages but it also became the focus of mainstream American debate. Everyone had an opinion on who was to blame: It was the players' who began the brawl on the court and then took it into the stands. It was the fans who provoked multimillionaire athletes into anger by throwing debris down on them. It was the Palace at Auburn Hills' security who failed to bring the situation under control. It was the NBA for encouraging such thuggish behavior from its players and then allowing their violence to take place on live TV. Opinion makers from all perspectives weighed in on the issue. Newspaper columnists and TV talking heads kept the brawl in the national spotlight. Some condemned the incident; some excused it, and some just wondered what all the fuss was over. In the end five Pacers players and seven Pistons fans were charged...
...ent behavior in order to win the game. Whereas, “sports violence can be seen as either an example of laudable competitive drive present in worthy participates or an underhanded attempts at rule bending” (Raney & Depalma, 2006). Moreover, decades of media exposure may have led to an increase in the acceptance of violence. Is media coverage exploiting sports violence and aggression for ratings? It’s unclear if fans are becoming desensitized and/or imitating the violence witnessed through the medium of media. Regardless, it’s abundantly clear the changes need to be made in light of the negative effects. Identifying and examining media’s role in the public’s acceptance of aggressive behavior in sports may aid society in minimizing the violence and aggression as much as possible surrounding sporting events to make sporting events safer for both players and fans.
Media plays a large role in affecting peoples thinking, opinions, ideas, etc. In essence media can shape our thinking into negative views and perspectives that are typically not true. Sometimes the media plays as a puppet master to society. Specifically, the inequity of the gender roles within sports causes for a stir in commotion that calls for some attention. In doing so the inadequate misuse of media towards women in sports causes low exposure, amongst many other things. On the other hand their male counterparts are on the other end of the success spectrum. Because of this noticeable difference, it is vital that action is taken place to level out equality within sports. Due to the power of media, it is believed that a change in media coverage
Condoleezza Rice was the first african american woman to become Secretary of State. She has proved herself to be very successful from her job at Stanford, through her piano playing abilities, and of course, her job as the Secretary of State. Condoleezza Rice’s story is interesting because many aspects her success proves many of Malcom Gladwell’s theories, including the Matthew Effect, and 10,000 hours.
Media is the most powerful sector of an economy. It is a tool to maintain a balanced society which is characterized by well informed people, effective democracy and social justice. In fact, media has unparallel influence on all aspects of human life in modern times.
This method helps both the media company and sports event gain more viewers and increases revenue through sponsorship. Media coverage of sports can also serve as a learning tool for those who watch, as they will learn the rules of the game. The younger generation benefits from the role models that they follow through how the media covers them. Media coverage can also serve as a learning technique for professional players of the leagues as it can help their performance for the next game. The media does keep you informed about news you normally wouldn’t know about until the game has started such as if a player will play or not. This also affects your fantasy teams. From a business standpoint the media delivers far more then anyone could have imagined, which is valuable when it comes to whom they are sponsoring.
