Steinbock/What’s Wrong with Adultery?
Adultery is a horrible sin to commit, but it can actually be avoided, although many people in today's society respond differently based on their religion and culture. When a person commits adultery they fail in keeping his/her commitment to their partner. When adultery happens the trust is broken in the relationship and the other person will feel deceived and betrayed.
When a man and a woman come together and bind in holy matrimony, two people become one. In marriage, two people come before the pastor and under God with their partner, to recite promises that are vows. In many religions such as Christianity and Catholicism, sex should be for left only for marriage. Sex is an emotional experience that is for married people to enjoy sexual pleasure together. Love and trust are sacred for the foundation of marriage.
In order to understand adultery we must understand what it is and how does it start. Adultery-is the breaking of marriage. In the Ten Commandments the seventh commandment states “Thou shall not commit adultery”. Marriage and adultery are choices to be put into consideration before putting it into action. Adultery isn’t always about sex. Adultery in general can be looking at someone with a lustful eye. Usually in a marriage when a partners needs aren’t met they look for someone else outside of the marriage who can meet up to their expectations. It all starts with un-met needs such as money, lack of intimacy or none at all. Women are emotional beings who they are likely to with cheat once they find a man who is on the same emotional level with them. Men are likely to cheat if they feel unappreciated and not valued by their wife.

...roclaiming their love and faithfulness towards each other. When you commit your body and soul in your marriage your lifestyle will be stable and secure for your children to grow up in. Parents are role models for their children. As children grow up they will model the same behavior from their parents when they are adults.
Morality is doing what is right in making decisions and not mistakes. Adultery is a choice that is made followed by an action. Adultery can be avoided by thinking in a rational way instead of acting on one’s feelings. Adultery is never the answer for fixing an relationship, but instead it destroys the trust that your spouse has in you. If your not happy with the person your with you should leave your spouse instead of cheating. If you cheat this will make your spouse unlikely to trust you ever again because they will never forget what you did.
The original sin of adultery is what starts the events that end up ruining the characters' lives. "Come up hither, Hester, thou and little Pearl...Ye have both been here before, but I was not with you. Come up hither once again, and we will stand all three together!" (p. 133). Though it is never said out in the open, you come to the realization that Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale have committed the sin of adultery and when Hester becomes pregnant, she is convicted for that sin. "I'd been in the arms of my best friend's / wife" The man and his best friend's wife also commit the sin of adultery and when he cannot give an alibi to a judge because he does not want anyone to know where he was that night, he is convicted for murder and executed. Adultery is what ends up destroying the characters lives because none except for Hester are willing to admit to the sin of adultery.
The Greek word for adultery is moicheia, and the adulterous man is called the moichos (Carey, n.p). According to Euphiletos, moicheia was the “greatest of wrongs,” (Lysias, 45). This is an extreme issue in their society because it diminishes the power of the husband because he is her kurios, and failed protect her. Adultery was always considered to have been committed upon the woman because she is weak and unable to control her desires. However, moicheia was always done with her consent. In Xenophon’s Hieron, it is stated that adultery corrupts a woman’s affection to her husband, as she becomes attached to the other man both personally and sexually (Carey, n.p). Therefore, a key issue in adultery was interfering with the connection of the
The subject of adultery was first introduced soon after Alcee asked Calixta if he may take refuge from the approaching storm within her house. That was also the first point when the author lets us know that Calixta “may” still have feelings for Alcee. This was shown clearly in the story when it says, “ His voice and her own startled her as if from a trance…” Immediately after this the description of the setting changed from a outdoor relax feel to an indoor tense feel. This also lead to the feelings of both characters towards each other, which was shown when the room was described, “ The door stood open, and the room with its white, monumental bed, its closed shutters, looked dim and mysterious.”
The association between monogamy, fidelity, and marriage has been the concern of religion over the years. It is said that Saint Augustine, who lived from A.D. 354 to 430, spread the Christian idea that adultery is a moral transgression for both men and women. Even the Ten Commandments forbid adultery. This attitude toward adultery, Fisher says, has long influenced the Western view of monogamy (84). In other words, religion has tried to moralize monogamy by injecting the belief that adultery is sinful and monogamy is permanent. Therefore, monogamy in a biological sense, contrary to the religious sense, does not necessarily connote sexual faithfulness of the partners, nor is it necessarily long term.
...beral - perhaps amoral - society, adultery can be justified if we are truly in love or somehow deceived in marriage. There are many in our society today that would teach that adultery is not a great sin, but rather the guilt is the sin. They would say, "I am no devil, for there is none." In general, if you declare something not to be a sin, or at least a justifiable sin, you can do away with the guilt. According to Christian theology, however, there is a catch that states, in 1 Corinthians 32:12, "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." When we know of our self-deception perfectly, hell has arrived, the day has passed, and we are no longer able to repent. From a Christian's perspective, you can deny or disagree with what God declares to be sin, but only temporarily ...
1. From a Chinese perspective, adultery is an awful thing that should not be mentioned because it is considered a shame of the family. Any woman who commits adultery must be guilty. However, Kingston does not agree with that. In fact, she even showed sympathy to her aunt.
...). Whatever motivation there is to cheat on a spouse, there is not an acceptable reason to do it.
Infidelity is depicted as an extremely negative thing in the United States, and is often blamed for trust issues, psychologically damaging the spouse and their children, tearing apart marriages and families and more. People who commit adultery are often shamed and told how wrong what they did is and what a terrible person they are for doing it. According to the Journal of Martial and Family by the Associated Press, however, 41% of “marriages where one or both spouses admit to infidelity, either physical or emotional.” Clearly, while infidelity is generally viewed negative by society, many people either decide that it is not as negative as it is portrayed, or do not care and do it anyway. “The Lady with the Pet Dog” and “The Storm” both go against the typical view of adultery being a negative thing in a relationship by showing that it can actually have a beneficial outcome and leave some, if not all people happier.
If we look at the beliefs of Christianity, its subjects believe that God will see something that is frowned upon thus closing their chance at heaven upon becoming deceased, or even lead to certain consequences in the near future known as karma. Though it is not proven that there is a heaven or God, many hold strong to their beliefs on the subject, though they cannot see said upper hand.. Due to the belief that God is watching, his believers know that committing sin (such as adultery and wrath) is such a move that could potentially be “frowned upon.” However, they also have the choice of going to confe...
Ever wonder what the consequence would be of something such as cheating on a partner in today’s society. You won’t get in any trouble with the town or with the law. You might have a few people that dislike you but nothing more, but in the story The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne one has more than that if he commits such a terrible crime. I Believe sinners that have committed adultery are not the worst of the bunch, they just slipped and did it out of temptation and desire.
While the dictionary defines fidelity “the act or fact of having romantic or sexual relationship with someone other than one’s husband, wife, or partner”; my definition would naturally be a bit different (Fidelity, n.d.). In my opinion, there are different types of cheating and is not limited to just a romantic or sexual relationship with another person. An article by Alyssa Siegel explained some types of cheating which I also agree with. There’s emotional fidelity which is when the partner finds someone else for the sensitive aspect of it when they should be sharing it with their actual partner. Physical which is obviously inherently sexual and can be considered as an affair (Alyssa Siegel, 2013). Having “open” relationships such has not having
The first form of adultery is Accidental Infidelity. This can happen to the more careless person, but at the same time, to the person whose values and commitments are tenuous. They lack self-control and respect for both themselves and their spouse. Any situation where they are left alone with the opposite sex is an opportunity for an “accident” to occur. It was shocking to find out that most cases of infidelity occur with couples who are less than twenty -five years old, one would have thought early marriages where happy and care free (figure one).
These questions arise from our own desires as Christians to reflect a biblically sound attitude towards sexuality and relationships. That same desire to act according to biblical scriptures is subject to opposition from today’s culture and views about sexual relationships, gender, and roles. A new definition of marriage, sexual orientation, and sexual practices is challenging our relationship with God and our view of human sexuality. Bishop John Spong defines sex and its impact on relationships: “Sex can be called at once the greatest gift to humanity and the greatest enigma of our lives. It is a gift in that is a singular joy for all beings and enigma in its destructive potential for people and their relationships.” (Spong, 1988)
The fourth and final step of the marriage process is to become one flesh. According to free dictionary.com, become means “to grow or come to be,” or “to be appropriate or suitable; to develop or grow into; to be appropriate; befit.” Becoming is a process that takes time and work. Tim Keller states that in order to call a union marriage, “sex is understood as both a sign of that personal, legal union and a means to accomplish it. The Bible says don’t unite with someone physically unless you are also willing to unite with the person emotionally, personally, socially, economically, and legally. Don’t become physically naked and vulnerable to the another person without becoming vulnerable in every other way, because you have given up your freedom and bound yourself in marriage.” (Keller pg. 215) God’s design is supposed to occur on the wedding night as they complete their marriage vows by having sex. It is clear that “they will become one flesh” is a indirect term for sex but it is also more than sex. The become one is to be on the same page, mind and accord. It is correct to compare it to one brain, making one decision and taking one action. Together one path, and they share one authority, one heart, one body, one mind, one thought, one church, and one God. The spouses become one flesh in every sense of the word. All these areas of oneness are important because division in any of them will cause them to stumble.
