mHealth which stands for Mobile Health, is a term used for practicing public health and medicine using mobile technologies. The health sector in the emerging markets faces many challenges like high disease prevalence, low number of health care workers and limited financial resources. Even though the remote areas of the emerging markets lack in modern technologies like internet the Mobile Technology has been an exception. Mobile Phones have managed to reach even the remote areas with people having low or middle-income. This rapid rise in mobile phone penetration has motivated the idea for combining the mobile technology and the health sector. This led to the idea of mHealth. Education and awareness Mobile phones have been used as vehicles for health promotion and prevention messages. Problem addressed: Why SMS? All mobile phones are SMS-enabled. Texting is cheaper and affordable by the people in remote areas. The Short Message Service (SMS) can offer a low-cost method of providing efficient reach out about a number of health issues. SMS messages are sent directly to users’ phones to provide health information, disease prevention and treatment methods. Example: SMS alerts for infant vaccinations in India. When the parents register the birth of a child with the hospital they will be integrated with the SMS vaccination alert system. Alerts on vaccination dates and details on their importance will be automatically sent to the mobile numbers of parents. The SMS alert program was started in 2011. This is a government driven program. It is jointly sponsored by Information Kerala Mission / Government of Kerala. This program has been huge success and is now adopted by many hospitals. Functionality: The service uses mobile devices to connect students who are interested in acquiring knowledge and learning with the experts in India. It provides premium education content and learning experience. The subscription rate is Rs. 2 per day which can be done via SMS. Students can view video tutorials and play MP4 videos. There are many categories provided like Education, Jobs, Hobbies, and Sports etc. Strengths: The service was able to cover the core competencies like – affordable, lightweight, mobile, simple, and human-centric. Students can access the content anywhere in their mobile and browse the contents according to the categories. Thus we can see that the potential for mobile devices are promising in the emerging markets and they can be used effectively to improve the global economy.
