With todays use of technology, it is certainly one of the largest and utilized components within today’s society. There are several specific characteristics that the digital world has to offer – with some examples being technological devices themselves, programming and social networking within teaching communities. According to the UK Department of Education (2013)
“Many sectors, such as medicine, manufacturing, entertainment, travel, finance and retail have been changed fundamentally by the effective and innovative use of technology.”
The statement given by UK Department of Education reinforces the fact that in the digital world today, technology has become an important component of our society by convincingly improving in major areas such as medicine, entertainment and finance. The large use of this technology has also had a considerable impact on education, and will certainly have an effect on the type of teacher I will become. This is because teachers have become more reliant on digital technology that will continue to increase throughout the future.
An important characteristic within the digital world today is the technological devices in which we utilize and have access too. Digital technology is defined by WhatIs (2005) as “electronic technology that generates, stores, and processes data.” Specific examples of technological devices are those such as laptops, iPads and even calculators. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly (2012) provided in their article “The role of ICT in Western Australian Education: Living and Working in a Digital World” the modification to technology in education from former education to present education. If adults and children do not understand on how to use a technological device, they may not understand programming which is a growing characteristic of the digital world. Programming is used on technological devices; therefore understanding on how to use these applications is applicable. As a future teacher I will need to understand on how to use many more programs – as programs will continue to expand and develop within the teaching profession. Social networking the last characteristic discussed is a proven large component, as social networking helps to develop educational resources – which influences myself as a future educator to have a large collection of ideas to apply in my future classroom.
Over the past few decades technology has advanced quite a bit. The use of calculators, computers, and other techniques in many fields has increased significantly. In a large scale, technology is replacing the method of instruction in the field of education. Many people believe that adopting technology in learning process can increase productivity. However, David Gelernter, who is a professor at Yale University as well as a leading figure in the field of technology, suggests to limit the use of technology in the classroom in his article “Unplugged: The Myth of Computers in the Classroom” which was published in the New Republic magazine in 1994. In this article he offers well illustrated analysis which makes the readers to regulate the use of technology in the classroom. He thinks that the technology comes in a way of building strong foundation of basic skills. He insists that computers should be used to aid the learning process, not to replace cognitive thinking.

Whether it is an ebook, laptop, iPad, computer, or Smartboard, they all have brought teaching literacy to a new level. These tools are not going to leave our classrooms, if anything they will impact the learning at new and higher levels. There will come a day, and I think it will be soon, that every student will have access to their own technology devices at school and at home. Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). However, technology should never substitute the fundamental learning in our educational systems. Specifically, in primary school, building a firm fundamental education is crucial. Seeing children still using fingers to do simple math in second grade is not a good sign of academic improvement. People who are against technology’s involvement in education believe technology would make the children of the future less intelligent and more reliant on technology rather than their own self’s.
