Introduction Technology is changing how we think and act at younger ages. The term “technology” doesn’t only mean manufacturing processes and equipment necessary for production, it also defines a social space and could be a social problem which makes a real impact on social reality. Different types of social software affect a variety of aspects and have both positive and negative impacts. It's important to be aware of how a digitally-driven life is changing our education, sense of self, relationships, social interaction, consumerism, and ways of doing business around the world. Types of social software “Social software is the integration of communication and collaboration technologies that allow people to meet, interact and share ideas, artefacts and interests with each other.( Aelita,1)” Social software technologies include email, wikis, blogs, and knowledge sharing functions such as collaborative editing and document management. Some social tools also integrate real-time features, including instant messaging and web conferencing with voice and video. (See Table 1) Educational Impact The advantages of using the social network make it an excellent learning tool through dialogues and collaborations. Class Materials and online cooperation among students foster the creation of a class-room-like learning environments which has many potential benefits that they can acquire. The communication and interaction in learning is reinforced by adding the social networking to the school community; therefore, it results in the overall enhancement of the learning environment. Because we have so much at our fingertips, we don’t ask our brains to remember the same things, which is what makes our brains robust. “We just don’t see a need to remember as much because it is going to be right at our fingertips. The neurological component of this is that the regions of the brain that we don’t use or that we don’t stimulate end up getting pruned off. And so if we aren’t asking the memorizing portions of our brains to work, those portions will gradually lose their function.”
The evolution of technology has had a great impact on our lives, both positive and negative. Technology is one of the most important things in everyone’s life. Technology improves every day. in regards to today’s youth, they were born with all the new technological inventions as opposed to our parents. In “Quality Time, Redefined” by Alex Williams, published in the New York Times, the author talks about the positive and negative effects on technology. I enjoyed this reading because it related my personal day to day life. Even though some Americans acknowledge that technology is a part of their everyday life, they do not see the negative outcome of technology, they are blinded only by the positive aspects.
A more scientific aspect on why our brain is affected by the large sea of information that is available to us is touched upon by Eric Jaffe. The writer explains that “the barrage of new media distractions is placing new demands on cognitive processing, and especially on attention allocation […] While cause-and-effect is difficult to parse here, in some sense it doesn’t matter. If all this digital media is causing people to multi-task more frequently, then their learning ability will suffer” (Jaffe). New media and information makes it that distractions are much more numerous according to Jaffe. Consequently, the ability to learn is negatively impacted because less concentration means less time for information to actually be processed and stored into minds.
Whilst Facebook was not initially intended or created for education purposes it has the ability to generate potentials for social learning. According to Pappas (2014), in a learning environment a lecturer or facilitator can create a closed or secret group in Facebook to share course material, pose questions, create a poll to seek feedback and ultimately promote collaboration amongst members. This is also true in the case of the research carried out as part of this project, a closed Facebook group was created and used to share articles, Ted Talks and course material and sought feedback and comments from the participants in an attempt at promoting and encouraging collaboration.
