What my band fam means to me is a group of well-rounded individuals who I can rely upon and who have come together because of a common love for music. Us twelve seniors come from different backgrounds, have different opinions, share different interests, besides the one interest that keeps us all close to one another, music. Without music, we may not have bonded with one another. We would be like any other ordinary student in the high school, only creating friends with those whom they share interests with. We are different however. The bond we have created is unlike any other in our high school. Our bond is formed through creating beautiful music with one another. Apart from becoming close to one another, we also share success, both musically
Keeping each other and themselves alive the band learns to survive by finding shelter, finding food and finding collaboration. They are also people who learn how to overcome hardships and gain more ability from their experience. Knowing people who are the smartest are not always the ones that survive, but instead are those who learn to adapt and manage change.
Band is family. When your student walks onto campus, he or she is instantly adopted into the strongest society on campus. They will be spending their school days among the top achievers on campus, with fellow students who look out for one another and steer each other away from trouble instead of towards it. Teachers, staff, parents, and volunteers watch over all the kids as if they were their own.
In closing, the undoubtable influence of music, more specifically of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society is responsible for a number of changes to the status quo. These range from sexual liberation and racial desegregation all culminating with other influences to create an intergenerational identity. Despite the desperate attempts of older generations to smother these influences, these changes ultimately shaped the years that followed, molding the country into what it is today. Along the way these changes as well as individual involvement in them has also eased the lives of many through empowerment and a feeling of community and purpose. Despite a lull and renewal Rock ‘n’ Roll continues to serve as an agent of influence and change in today’s youth culture and continues to burn in the heart of past generations of loyal fans.
I'm in the band. No, scratch that; I'm more than just in the band. I am the band. Unless, of course, that makes me sound conceited. In which case, I describe myself as an integral component to the marching band. The band would never be the same without me! I admit it: I'm a band nerd, a music nut, and a clarinet geek. You can describe me with whatever phrase you want. Regardless of how you look at it, I'll always be a band geek, and I'm proud of it!
George Helmholtz, as the head of the music department at Lincoln High School, is very determined with his regular students and the gifted musicians of the band. Each semester and year at school he dreams of “leading as fine a band as there was on the face of the earth. And each year it came true”. His certainty that it was true was because he believed there was no greater dream than his. His students were just as confident and in response, they played their hearts out for them. Even the students with “no talent played on guts alone” for Helmholtz.
There were many ethical dilemmas in “The Band Played On”, many of which had to do with money. One of these ethical dilemmas was connected to the owners of the blood banks. They didn’t want to test all their blood for HIV/AIDS because it would cost a lot. Dr. Don Francis then stated “How many people have to die to make it cost efficient for you people to do something about it.” This also came up when the characters started talking about when doctors become businessmen. In the beginning of the movie, a French doctor was threatened to stop treating HIV/AIDS patients because it was scaring other “customers” away. Although not stated in the movie, I also believe that the situation President Reagan was in was an ethical dilemma. If Reagan actually did help fund AIDS research in his first term, his party would see him negatively because he was helping the gay community, which was not something his party supported. If he did this, he would be seen as a hypocrite and probably wouldn’t have been re elected.
A community is a group of people who share something in common whether it be location, interest or a common goal. Communities are what bring people together and that is exactly what happens in marching band. Marching band is a way for people to find their place and make friends. It is very important not only for growth in music, but also for growth in character and friendship. There is only one requirement for marching band and that is to be able to play an instrument and be willing to practice hard. The people who join marching band do not need to have similar like and dislikes, majors, or even anything remotely in common.
Band is an elective given in elementary schools through college schools around the world. Many schools come together and compete with one another. School bands also perform at football games, basketball games, and in parades. Most school marching bands are accompanied by a color guard, a group of performers, who add a visual interpretation to the music by using props, flags and rifles. A school marching band apparel includes a military type of style, the school's colors, along with the school's name and mascot. It is important to have band as an elective in schools because it helps kids display their emotions and maybe for some it is a hobby. Band directors have said that having band helps young emotional development, helps contribute to a more intellectual culture, builds teamwork and self confidence. It is hard to imagine being in this amazing class and coming upon these out of the box stereotypes and misconceptions of being a nerd, lazy or unathletic. These stereotypes and misconception mainly come from basically movies, shows and books things that are being aired. For example, a kid show, spongebob, kids from ages three to twelve are watching these shows maybe even teens and adults. A spongebob episode fifteen, season two is titled “band geeks”, putting this low degrading name on the group of kids performing at football games with instruments
wardrobe, band members wear is a little different from what is trending in the modern society. Ripped skinny jeans or shoes, hoodies in the dark shaded colors are common type of clothing members wear. Additionally, many seem to understand that band individuals have poor hygiene due to how many men have long hair and not a clean cut shave. As said before, many of the stereotypes are not fully wrong. According to Makewav.es, in the article Misconceptions About Rock Music, by Maddie Smith and Talia Alvarez, who both stated, “Will not try to defend the fact that some artists in the industry, like Danny Worsnop and Ronnie Radke, are recovering addicts.” The authors explain that some truth behind what is said about alcohol or drug consumers on band members is true. It has been indicated that not just the act of a small groups has produced a negative image on people who play
What changed my life the most was probably band. I've been in band for about 3 or 4 years now,and I really enjoy it. Band has helped me out in a lot of ways and will continue helping me until I no longer need help. In band, originally I wanted to be a percussionists like my older brother but they told me I was quite good on trumpet, so naturally I chose trumpet. I still play trumpet along with horn,baritone,etc..
The band has taught me many valuable lessons. My technical skills have grown as well as my social skills. I’ve learned to treat others with respect; additionally, I now understand my unique learning style. I am a much faster learner due to being taught work in a short amount of time which has helped me tremendously with school. I used to not care about my grades in middle school, for I had nothing to work towards. I just went there turned in some work and called it a day. Now I have something to keep me on my toes, and my grades have become tip top, thus I am now able to be a part of this organization. My confidence has exceedingly grown since last year. I was very self conscious about who I was, for I had nothing to help me embrace who I truly am. I have been taught major things about self discipline this past season. Success is a road paved with mistake and failure. Through these mistakes, I learned self control and perseverance. Going back to freshman year I didn’t think I would be as skilled
My most important contribution to my school has been being involved in marching band. I have been in the Pride of Morehead marching band for four years now. Marching band is one of those organizations that begins prior to school starting. We have two weeks of band camp. During this time period, we teach the freshman how to march, memorize music, as well as learn who they are. We also begin to learn the drill for the show. During this time we make new friendships with younger band members. As I have gotten older, many of my friends have graduated and left band. As a senior, my only significant friends were seniors. I decided to reach out and make new friendships this year so the freshman would feel more comfortable. As a section leader, I have
It is impossible to fully comprehend the appeal to the Gulf Coast High School Band Room unless you are actually a member of the band. All members of the Gulf Coast High School marching band spend the majority of their time in the band room, which is like a second home for most. The room itself does not appear to be anything special. It is a large room with a high ceiling, bright fluorescent lighting, and pink and green padding on the walls. The hallway maintains a terrible odor which nobody can quite determine the source of, and the white, vinyl tile floor is covered in a layer of disgusting things one can only dream of. Still, for some reason it remains a haven to about twelve percent of the student body. At first glance, it does not look like anything special, but when you open that big, gray door and step into the “band world” it becomes clear that it really is an amazing and wonderful place. It feels like the center of the universe.
My involvement in my band Subtle Words has positively influenced me and aided me in my transition to adulthood. I first began to show interest in music in the fourth grade and it has helped impacted me since. I’ve been involved in various musical groups including choral, men’s choir, concert band, and jazz band. Since my freshman year, I have played in several different local bands. It wasn’t until I started my current band, Subtle Words, that I became a more responsible and capable person of leading.
There are many people believe that their time in music programs has brought them lifelong friends and a sense of family that is hard to find elsewhere. In the article "Twelve Benefits of Music Education" it states that, "In order for an orchestra to sound good, all players must work together harmoniously towards a single goal, the performance, and must commit to learning music, attending rehearsals, and practicing." This is true, for each individual student must do all of this in order to make the group sound better as a whole. Most programs like band or orchestra involve students working with other students to create music that they wouldn't be able to make by themselves. If some people don't practice or learn their part, they make the whole group sound terrible. It is also crucial to constantly listen to other people to make sure every part lines up with one another. Having to be aware of this all the time helps people to learn teamwork skills needed for not only school, but outside life. In addition, music helps to develop the social skills high school students need. In the article titled "Band Benefits" it states that, "I have seen many kids come out of their shell through playing in a band. Weekly band rehearsals become an oasis in an often stressful and complex world and many times the friends you make in the band become like
