In the short story, The Kid Nobody Could Handle, by Kurt Vonnegut, the main character of the story is George Helmholtz. He lives in a small town with his wife, is the head of the music department at the local high school and the director of the band. He is the most important person in the story because he is the only one, not psychiatrists, and foster parents, to make a difference in Jim’s life. Throughout the story, George is determined and hopeful, lonely, and fixated with the beauty of music. George Helmholtz, as the head of the music department at Lincoln High School, is very determined with his regular students and the gifted musicians of the band. Each semester and year at school he dreams of “leading as fine a band as there was on the face of the earth. And each year it came true”. His certainty that it was true was because he believed there was no greater dream than his. His students were just as confident and in response, they played their hearts out for them. Even the students with “no talent played on guts alone” for Helmholtz. After George catches Jim Donnini trashing the laboratory, he tells him that if all the schools were destroyed there would be no hope left, “The hope that everybody will be glad he’s alive”. His determination does not just touch his music students, all through the story he tries many ways to get through to Jim, finally at the end he succeeds. “George glanced at Jim Donnini, who sat at the last seat of the worst trumpet section of the wors...
The narrator's disapproval of Sonny's decision to become a musician stems in part from his view of musicians in general. His experiences with musicians have led him to believe that they are unmotivated, drug users, seeking only escape from life. He does not really understand what motivates Sonny to play music until the afternoon before he accompanies Sonny to his performance at a club in Harlem. That afternoon, Sonny explains to him that music is his voice, his way of expressing his suffering and releasing his pent-up feelings.
As a child, George was the rowdy and rambunctious sort. He played games in the streets and did not pay much attention to his school work. He was often in trouble for not completing his homework or for getting into fights. (Malchis) He did not consider himself interested in music as a child, since such an interest branded one as a sissy in his neighborhood. However, one day when he was ten, George heard a wonderful sound near him. He discovered a classmate playing Dvorák's Humoresque on his violin. George was immediately entranced and waited one and a half hours in the rain in order to meet this boy and talk to him. The boy, named Max Rosen, quickly became friends with George and immersed him into the world of music. (Malchis)
The story's first encounter with music is after the narrator has learned of Sonny's arrest. He is thinking about the boys he teaches, and how they could all be "sucked under" (419) just as Sonny has been. He hears their laughter in the schoolyard and notes its "mocking and insular" quality, a noise made by disillusioned youth rather than the untainted, joyous sound one expects of children (410). One boy whistles a tune, a cool and moving, complicated and simple melody, "pouring out of him as though he were a bird," and the music manages to soar above the harsh sounds of disenchantment (410). Clearly this music is joy and salvation. Because he concentrates on this simple music, one boy does not curse and den...
The program ran this year at the New Smyrna Beach High School Barracuda Band this year could be summarized by one word: sound. The sounds produced by our ensemble during marching season had crowds across the state cheering us on, and earned an overall superior at our Marching Music Performance Assessment. The sounds during our concert season have been even more impressive, earning a straight superior at our District Six Concert Music Performance Assessment and sent thirteen performances to our state level Solo and Ensemble. This year the program was also sound, in the sense of it settling down. A previous year of bumpy roads and crash landings finally came to a smooth journey, and this was caused by many factors. Some of our more negative members left our ensemble, either via graduation or variance, other members came to terms with our situation and decided to battle for the band and no longer against it, and our leadership team for the 2013-2014 school year was much improved in comparison to our previous team.
When I was first elected as section leader in the TWCP Marching Band my junior year, I had a copious amount of hope in the people around me. Even though we did not share the same beliefs and interests, I felt that with my leadership position, I can still help those newer members thrive in band and make their time worthwhile. I was the first chair bassoonist in the top band and had placed well in multiple prestigious competitions, so I was confident in my abilities. This task was a relatively simple one for me. Always understanding of the younger students’ interests, I knew exactly how it felt to be in their position. Band was enjoyable for me, I lived for the competition
Definitions of reflection vary depending on the discipline of the author. Having reviewed the literature, Bulman (2008, p.2), a nurse, defines it as “reviewing an experience from practice so that it may be described, analysed, evaluated and used to inform and change future practice”. It is a personal process requiring honesty, openness, self-awareness, courage and a willingness to act on criticism. It acknowledges that feelings and emotions influence actions. Critical reflection involves in depth examination and questioning of personal, social, historical, cultural and political assumptions and perspectives that are embedded in actions. It is an active process enabling one to make sense of events, situations and actions that occur in the workplace (Oelofsen, 2012). It transforms a situation in which there is confusion and doubt to one that is clear and coherent (Dewey, 2010).
Reflection is a vital tool for learning and development, both in and outside of the healthcare profession. As health care professionals we must develop and keep up to date with the latest treatments and technologies in order to be able to deliver the safest and most effective care available to our patients. Donald Schon has led the study of the effects of reflection in health care since 1987. And with the addition of Kolb and his learning styles, reflection is now fundamental in the development of health care professionals.
...ble in the world and all the objects in nature requires such an impression of wisdom, happiness and simplicity to survive. He urges people to use the pleasure of nature with some self-control because nature always has the colors of the spirit and says that the nature is the component of universe. According to Thoreau, Emersosn and Transcendentalism Emerson’s “Nature” summary and analysis Emerson states that “a man may grasp the underlying meaning of the physical world by living harmoniously with nature, and by loving truth and virtue”
It is impossible to fully comprehend the appeal to the Gulf Coast High School Band Room unless you are actually a member of the band. All members of the Gulf Coast High School marching band spend the majority of their time in the band room, which is like a second home for most. The room itself does not appear to be anything special. It is a large room with a high ceiling, bright fluorescent lighting, and pink and green padding on the walls. The hallway maintains a terrible odor which nobody can quite determine the source of, and the white, vinyl tile floor is covered in a layer of disgusting things one can only dream of. Still, for some reason it remains a haven to about twelve percent of the student body. At first glance, it does not look like anything special, but when you open that big, gray door and step into the “band world” it becomes clear that it really is an amazing and wonderful place. It feels like the center of the universe.
Fast food has been a very common solution for on the go eating because a restaurant is located at almost every corner and the convenience of drive thrus give people the luxury of not even having to get out of their car. Sutter Health indicates that over 25 percent of Americans consume fast food daily. It is not a secret that fast food has been blamed for being one of the major causes of obesity. This brings up the question how exactly does fast food affect specifically your everyday activities when it is consumed. Numerous arguments have been made about how fast food can hinder your daily progress and why it should be avoided or maybe be eaten but only in moderation.
The birth of Pepsi cola began in 1893. That was when the drink was first invented by Caleb Bradham, who was also a pharmacist, but lived in New Bern, North Carolina. The drink was named “Brad’s Drink” and was sold in Bradham’s pharmacy. It was renamed “Pepsi Cola” in 1898 when pepsin and cola nuts were added to the drink’s formula. The new name was trademarked in 1903. Bradham had succeeded in selling his drink for seventeen ye...
The term reflection means the examination of personal thoughts and actions. For nurses this means focusing on how they interact with their colleagues and with the environment to obtain a clearer picture of their own behaviour. This means it is a process in which a nurse can better understand themselves in order to be able to build on existing strengths and take appropriate future action (Somerville, 2004). Reflection is a way to bring your own intuition along with empirical knowledge together. Reflective practice in nursing is guided by models of reflection. Reflective practice model serves as a framework within which nursing or other management professions can work. Reflective practice model is also a structural framework or learning model that serves the purposes of a profession and is particularly applicable to health related professions. Reflective practice enables practitioners to learn to value themselves as significant people with values and feelings that are important factors in giving care. Whilst reflective practice allows the nurse to recognise the value of their experiences, they may also need support to work through a difficult situation. This is where reflection aids nurses in dealing with these challenging experiences (Johns, 1995). Reflection on experience offers nurses the opportunity to reflect on caring in practice in ways that its nature can be understood, where the skills necessary for effective caring can be developed and most significantly, where the values of caring for people can be highlighted, both to the individual nurse and the world in general (Johns 1996)
This book discusses the life of Glenn Gould who was a profound pianist known for his classical music, Peter Ostwald a late violinist who wrote “The Ecstasy and Tragedy of Genius of Glenn Gould” believed that Gould was extraordinary gifted and that his music gained much appreciation among the people in the community. He not only saw Gould as a genius but also as a companion who struggled to find peace in his life through the sound of music. Gould didn’t act like a normal child he isolated himself from others because he felt that others around him did not share the same passion for music. His father noticed when he was born that instead of crying, “Glenn always hum” (Ostwald, 1997). This showed that Glenn was born with a passion towards music from the very early stages of life. Gould formed behaviors of an ambivalent attachment style towards his mother and behaviors of a secure attachment towards his father this impacted his ability to form long lasting relationships with people during his childhood progressing into his adult years. (My thesis)
With the times changing PepsiCo and other soft drink companies realized that when people go to have a snack they look for a drink as well, and with consumers looking for the healthy option soda company’s like PepsiCo were losing customers” (p.1). This is a creative and effective marketing strategies by the Pepsi Company since, they could realize the wants and thought of providing the need. In this case, the want was a drink with a snack, and their plan was to provide the most suitable drink with the snack, so that more people will buy their product, and their brand will promote. Since the consumers were looking for healthy soda drink instead of any kind of soda, this strategy didn’t work so well because they were losing customers like some other companies. However, it didn’t stop Pepsi Company to use this strategy, rather the company came up with a new strategy provide the healthy soda drink with the snack and be profitable at the same time. According to Ryder (2013), “PepsiCo introduced the “Power of One” in which PepsiCo purchased the two largest bottling groups, New York based Somers Pepsi Bottling Group (PBG) and Minneapolis based Pepsi-Americas. This merge gave PepsiCo direct control over 80% of its bottling network” (p.1), their new strategy
American life is quick paced and busy. Americans want quick reliable transportation, quick internet connection, quick money, quick healing, quick weight loss, quick energy, and even quick service from the restaurants they eat out at. When a busy person is looking for a quick, easy food, fast food is usually the best option. The main food at a fast food restaurant is usually a burger and French fries. Fast foods restaurants are popular in America because they are inexpensive and served very quickly. There’s no problem with eating fast food every so often, but if a person is eating it almost every day, it can lead to serious health concerns. Americans love to eat. However, it is important to understand that what goes into one’s mouth can affect the rest of the body. Fast food has brought a change into American lives. Hunting for food was once a full time job for humans. Today, such thoughts have become ancient. Food is delivered at the footsteps of your door. In addition, fast food's easy access has strongly contributed to the epidemic of obesity. Furthermore, the marketing of fast food through the media has become big business.
