For more than a century now, two major companies of soft drinks Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have been battling. Both companies have very long history in inventing, advertising, and selling their soft drinks. The birth of Coca Cola began in May 1886 when the first coke formula was invented. It was invented by a pharmacist who lived in Atlanta, Georgia called John Pemberton as drink at soda fountains. The name of the drink “Coca Cola” was a suggestion given by Pemberton’s bookkeeper Frank Robinson (Bellis). Pemberton wanted his invention to bring him commercial success, however, Coke did not do well in its early years (Martin). The man died in August 1888. After Pemberton’s death, a business man named Asa Candler bought his formula for $2300 and rescued his Coke business (Bellis). In 1891, Candler became the sole owner of Coca-Cola (Martin). Coca-Cola became one of the most popular fountain drinks in America by the late 1890s (Bellis). However, Pemberton would never see this commercial success he had been looking for during his lifetime since his life ended in 1888 before Coca-Cola became popular. After the 1960s, soda fountains became less popular and coke began to be sold in bottles. On April 23, 1985, the “New Coke” formula was released (Bellis). The Coke we drink today is the “New Coke” that comes in bottles. The birth of Pepsi cola began in 1893. That was when the drink was first invented by Caleb Bradham, who was also a pharmacist, but lived in New Bern, North Carolina. The drink was named “Brad’s Drink” and was sold in Bradham’s pharmacy. It was renamed “Pepsi Cola” in 1898 when pepsin and cola nuts were added to the drink’s formula. The new name was trademarked in 1903. Coke continuously out-stands Pepsi, even though they share a very similar taste and colour, however Coke should not be the drink that receives all the love and attention for what it offers. Despite their similar soda colour, the drinks actually contain some different ingredients, which produce a different taste, and affect the body differently. From this ordinary pharmacist, named Dr. John S. Pemberton, came a distinctly flavored syrup that was tested and retested several times. After taking it to the local pharmacy down the road in Atlanta, Georgia, he sold about nine servings a day (Pendergrast). Little did Dr. Pemberton know that his product would skyrocket to about ten billion gallons a day almost two hundred years later. In 1892, Candler and his brother John Candler, Frank Robinson and two other associates formed "Coca-Cola Company" in Georgia. Candler was a master at marketing. He handed out coupons for one free glass of Coca-Cola. He also promoted the beverage by painted walls, Clocks, outdoor posters, serving trays and fountain urns. Coca-Cola is a name that is known across all seven continents. Coca-Cola is one of the largest beverage companies in the world. It all started back in 1886 when Dr. John S. Pemberton became curious and creative which led him to make a unique soft drink. He created a flavor of syrup. He made a syrup from sugar and then combined it with carbonated water and created the first ever Coca-Cola. Dr. Pemberton took his combination of syrup and carbonated water back to his home time Pharmacy, Jacobs Pharmacy, where they tasted the combination and thought it was “excellent.” They then began to sell the new product for five cents a bottle.
