My most important contribution to my school has been being involved in marching band. I have been in the Pride of Morehead marching band for four years now. Marching band is one of those organizations that begins prior to school starting. We have two weeks of band camp. During this time period, we teach the freshman how to march, memorize music, as well as learn who they are. We also begin to learn the drill for the show. During this time we make new friendships with younger band members. As I have gotten older, many of my friends have graduated and left band. As a senior, my only significant friends were seniors. Most band members would disagree with this, however, the color guard is superior to the band because the guard has to work harder, has more interesting equipment, and a better offseason activity than the marching band.

One of the biggest decisions of my high school career came my sophomore year when I decided to try out for the role of drum major in my high school band. This decision was very tough to make due to the fact that I was a sophomore, and although I already had three years of experience under my belt as a band member at Northview High School, I knew that it would be very tough to earn the respect of my peers if I succeeded in becoming drum major. Out of the three years I had spent in the band, the biggest influence on my decision to try out came from my very first marching season, between August and December of 2012. A community is a group of people who share something in common whether it be location, interest or a common goal. Communities are what bring people together and that is exactly what happens in marching band. Marching band is a way for people to find their place and make friends. It is very important not only for growth in music, but also for growth in character and friendship. There is only one requirement for marching band and that is to be able to play an instrument and be willing to practice hard. The people who join marching band do not need to have similar like and dislikes, majors, or even anything remotely in common.
There are many famous and important people who were a part of the Civil War and drummer boys are some of those people. R.C. Murphy said, “When most people think of the Civil War, they think of famous generals or battles fought or how politics entered into an Army operation. But when I think of the War Between the States, I think of quite possibly the most important member of either side--that is the drummer.” Drums and drummer boys played a crucial role in wars, mainly in the Civil War. The first time that drums were used in America in battle was during the Revolutionary war and they were used for several different reasons. Drums became crucial during the Civil War. Adult soldiers were not the ones that were playing drums in battle, but more on that later. There are a few drummer boys that stand out among the rest because of what they did during the Civil War.
I have done so by participating in numerous activities, and when I commit to something, I put all my effort into it, to the fullest extent of my ability. This allows me to be able to meet and cultivate relationships with new people at Roswell High School that I would not have met otherwise. In forming these newfound friendships, I have been able to mature socially and emotionally; I learned to nurture my ability to empathize with others and to express my care and compassion for others more easily. This has allowed me to realize my true heart for people, and I have used these skills, along with my enthusiasm and sense of humor, to encourage an environment of school pride.
I have been a member of marching band ever since I was in eighth grade. Marching, and music itself, was almost part of my DNA, with my entire family having been involved in musical organizations before me. My journey into the world of marching band began as a timid, reserved, and anxiety-filled girl who did not know anybody else involved in the organization. I was convinced that I was going to hate it, and came home from most of our summer rehearsals in tears. That was when older members started reaching out to me; they invited me to lunches and dinners during band camp, and sat with me during breaks so that I did not have to be alone. It is about who I am off the podium. For the past five years (I marched up as an 8th grader), I have been proving something to these people, so that they trust me in this position. The character of drum major or leader is one I have been perfecting since I was a freshman. For a long time I was just an actor trying to be a character. Eventually, I had acted the part so much that I became it, and it was my role. I give respect to receive it. I build real relationships of with members to achieve trust, accountability, and effort. When people are torn up inside because of their home life, which is quite frequent in Lenoir City Tennessee, I am their shoulder to cry on, or a set of ears to vent to, or a buffer to dull their anger. When people are frustrated with me for some reason, I seek them out and learn what I can do different. When there are five flavors of gum stuck to the floor of the band room at 11:30 on a Friday night, I get on my knees with a plastic fork and start scraping. When the band director constantly yells at me for this that and the other, I take into account the criticisms and practice harder. The band and the director see this character I have transformed into, or maybe the one I have always been, and that is why I have the honor of standing on the podium and wearing the gloves. In years present and past North Atlanta’s marching band has been high achieving and highly valued. It is a program that is under the leadership of Adam Brooks. Brooks is the heart and soul of the band program at North Atlanta. His passion for music began much in the same way that his students’ did. In addition to band teacher, Brooks is also the teacher of the year for 2012-2013. In regards to his musical talent A French horn player by trade, Mr. Brooks has studied with multiple esteemed professors including Donovan Wells, Director of Bands at Bethune-Cookman, James Poitier, Associate Director of Bands at Bethune-Cookman, and Dr. William Rogan, world renowned Horn performer and instructor. My high school marching band has impacted my life in multiple ways, one is by providing me with multiple opportunities to be a leader. Going into to senior year, I continued to have major roles in the band. Other than helping my bandmates improve their skills, I also had to make major decisions regarding the well-being of the people around me. Every year, the Anaheim Union High School District holds an event called “Band Spectacular,” which is a showcase displaying all of the high school marching bands in the district.
