A popular quote used by many guard members is that “Color Guard is god's gift to the marching band”. No matter your religion, the message of the quote is clear. Many guard members feel that the marching band needs them. Most band members would disagree with this, however, the color guard is superior to the band because the guard has to work harder, has more interesting equipment, and a better offseason activity than the marching band.
Wind and rain are environmental factor that mother nature never forgotten during the marching band season. However, when it comes to these weather problems the band has it easy. When it rains everyone is miserable, but there is a difference between being unhappy with the rain and being effected by it. When it rains the band members get wet, and so do their instruments, but that does not affect the way they play. The rain can not damage any of the instruments because they are all metal. They other unfavored weather is the wind. Just like the rain, the wind does not affect the band

members. All of the instruments are heavy enough that as long as you are holding on to them, they are not going to go anywhere. The band members like to complain about the wind and rain, but their instruments are not affected by either. The only thing that the wind and rain effects is there attitude. Environmental factors, such as wind and rain, plague all marching band seasons, well, the color guard at least. It has already been shown that the band is not affected by the weather. The color guard, however, are very affected. The wind is the worst of them all. Just imagine, thoughing something that is 3 pounds in the air with wind speeds of 35mph or higher. What would happen? The weight would blow away. Well, the color guard has to do the same thing, however, they have to catched and stay in the same spot. The other environmental factor that affects the color guard is rain. When it rains the silk on the flag gets very wet, which makes it sticky. With a routine that involves lots of tosses and stripping the silk, have the silk wet makes everything a lot harder. The pole also gets wet and slippery which makes holding on to the pole much more difficult. Then if you combine to two, one with think disaster would happen. However, the judges do not take weather into account so the guard is expected to be just as great in the day or shine. This makes the guard work harder which in turn makes them better. There are a lot of equipment, or instruments that go into marching band. Although they are all important to the marching band show, they are not as exciting as the guards equipment. In percussion there are the marimbus, rack, vibraphones, synthesizer, and the xylophone. In the drum line there are the snares drums, quad drums, tenors, and the symbol line. In the brass section there's the trumpet, french horn, trombone, and the tuba. In the woodwinds there is the flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, english horn, oboe, piccolo, and the saxophone. With all of these instruments you would think that the band's instruments would be better than the guards equipment, however, in this case quality is better than quantity. Even though the band has lots of instruments they all play into one song, which means the individual sounds do not stand out. This makes the guards equipment more interesting to watch because of their uniqueness. The guard might have less equipment than the band, but the guards equipment is more exciting and eye catching than the bands. The main piece of equipment that people usually think of are the flags. This is true. Guard members mostly spin flags. The flags are the best way to bring color to the show, because it gives a visual to the band's music. Other equipment that the guard has is a rifle. This is a wooden rifle that is painted white. These give excitement to the band because they are a good way to represent more hard and serious music. The last piece of equipment that the guard uses is a saber. A saber is the most advanced piece of equipment. It adds a suspenseful feel to the show because sabers are usually used to toss very high in the air. This adds a suspenseful feeling to show because the audience doesn’t know if they will catch the saber or not. Overall all of the equipment used in guard and band alike are important to the completion of the show, but the guards equipment is more exciting and eye catching. After marching band season, the guard takes the exciting route and has winter guard, and the band takes the, frankly, boring route with concert band. This is what people usually think of when they think of band. Imagine you are in my shoes. I walk into the cold theater room and sit down with a plop because the seat is lower than I expected. I shake it off and read the brochure. I see a list of songs; all “classics” like usual. The show is about to start so I try to relax when my knees run into the seat in front of me. Outch. The show starts and I look for my percussion friend. However, I can not see her because she is in the back. The only thing I see is the back of the conductor. I sit there for what seems like hours. Suddenly everyone stops playing. I was naive enough to think the song was over. No, just the end of the first of the five movements of the first out of the 4 songs. If this does not count as unexciting then I don’t know what would. The band is okay during marching band, but their off season activity comes nowhere close to the excitement of winter guard After the marching band season the band has concert band, but the color guard has winterguard.
Winter guard is an indoor guard season that goes from December till April. During marching band, the color guard has to create a routine that goes with the music the band chooses. However, during winter guard the color guard can choose the music they and create a routine that shows our full potential. This way the guard can choose the theme, and what equipment they want to use. Also, concert band is long and there is nothing to look at. Winter guard is completely different because the show is only 4 minutes long. The guard realizes that no one wants to sit for two long and watch the same thing for a long period of time. Winter guard is perfect because you get to watch an exciting show, that is short enough to keep you interested, but long enough to enjoy the show. This shows that the winter guard is much better alternative to marching band than concert
band. The guard is better than the band because of the guard has to work harder, has more interesting equipment, and a better offseason activity than the marching band. The guard has to work harder because they have to accommodate to the weather. The equipment including flags, rifles, and sabers are more interesting than the band instruments. Also, the guard has winterguard which is a much more exciting off time activity than concert band. So next time you attend a marching band show, really watch the guard and band; then you will see gods gift.
Large bands, full of unique instruments and amateur musicians, were required to play at festivals and ceremonies. Similar to the evolution of the Wind Ensemble, the Concert Band is derived from military purposes. Instruments, such as the trumpets, horns, and drums, were often used for signaling. In contrast to Wind Ensemble musicians, these Concert Band musicians never played their instruments for military enjoyment.
The details of intense experiences are often times not easily lost to others who acknowledge secondhand wonder when it is conveyed passionately. In other words, there are stimulating occurrences within even the most mundane lifetime that provide incredible sensory and a life changing incentive. Furthermore, this experience has the overwhelming power to convince others to pursue that event’s awe. An example of such an influential event is expertly playing an instrument and marching deliberately within The Pride of the Devils in front of a populous crowd. The primary reveal of The Pride’s strength is portrayed within the time-withstanding moments of the pregame exhibition as well as the enduring image of the half-time show. Because of the precise
Why should 12-14 year old girls be able to wear their school provided cheerleading uniform to school? You open the closet trying to find something to wear to school, but then you remember that tight, uncomfortable outfit that you have to wear to school that day. Your cheerleading uniform! You want to run away but you already know that you have to wear it or face the consequences (even if that means getting kicked off the team!). Twelve through fourteen-year-old girls should not be able to wear cheer uniforms to school. There are many complaints about the uniforms that girls are forced to wear. Some complain that they are very uncomfortable especially during the cold and windy weather. It’s like they are in prison! Students have clothes that express them in detail, color, or even style. People should never be separated from what they like, and schools should definitely
I was smiling and laughing while many on the plane were vomiting. This was the most fun I’d had on a flight, but not everyone seemed to share my excitement. They had good reason for anxiety; we had endured a turbulent, and were now circling Columbus unable to land. This started my experience at Winter Guard International World Championships in my junior year.
Is Color Guard a sport? Many people like to ask this question. Personally I think Color Guard is a sport. Here’s why, first the definition of a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. The definition alone tells you that Color Guard is classified as a sport, but some would still argue with that. I really don’t see how anyone could argue with that, because there are facts there to prove it. You do hardcore physical activity, have to have skill, and your team competes against other schools. Color Guard is also something I take very seriously because it sculpts you into who you are, it makes you strive for what you want. It makes you want to
There is something that generally is very noticeable in every band: the gender imbalance. The gender imbalance is can be described by looking at a band and noticing the people in each section. Some have all males or at least a great majority of them, like percussion (which is drums) or low brass (tubas, baritones or trombones). While others such as high woodwinds (flutes or clarinets) have a majority female population. There are a few sections you may be able to look at and see this, such as trumpets or saxophones, but even this depends on the marching band. This is a huge problem in the marching band world and it needs to be fixed so that more people will join or continue on in their music. The reason this is a huge problem is because when someone breaks that gender imbalance, for example a guy plays the flute, then people start to target that person. He could be teased or bullied which could make him quit band. Not a lot of girls try out for low brass or percussion because they guys in the group will most likely see them as inferior and give them all kinds of crap every day. Marching band is supposed to be a community that is like a family and people should feel comfortable with whatever that choose to play. With the current gender problem, that is not happening and therefore the community as a whole is
We have been asked to post/retire the colors for an event. So I am asking all of you if you are interested in being in the Color Guard for this event. If so reply to this email please.
I have been a member of marching band ever since I was in eighth grade. Marching, and music itself, was almost part of my DNA, with my entire family having been involved in musical organizations before me. My journey into the world of marching band began as a timid, reserved, and anxiety-filled girl who did not know anybody else involved in the organization. I was convinced that I was going to hate it, and came home from most of our summer rehearsals in tears. That was when older members started reaching out to me; they invited me to lunches and dinners during band camp, and sat with me during breaks so that I did not have to be alone. Eventually I made other friends my age, and I did not need to cling to them as much, but I still considered
Marching band is a very broad field to participate in. High school and college band both have specific criteria they have to meet during marching season. But what are the differences and likenesses between high school and college band? In high school band, there is one show to perform and there are many long, grueling hours spent perfecting and fine tuning it. The show is not only for halftime spectating at football games, but also band festival and regional contests. High school band has a more stern outlook because the entire season is spent working for placement, whether it be superior or not. Some bands have a more difficult time working considering obstacles such as size. Bands can range anywhere from only thirty to two hundred. With upperclassmen
Practicing the song and motions for the Waseca Marching Indoor Concert is nerve-racking, especially since this will be the final opportunity to practice with the high school band. I walk into the dim gymnasium and line up with the woodwinds. When all of the other musicians are in line with their sections, a bass drummer signals for the music to begin. I completely forget about my uncertainty and focus entirely on the music and the motions. While I play I remind myself what the next move is and I verify that I am moving with the woodwinds. After the song is over I am confident that I will do well for the Indoor Concert. Being in the Waseca Marching Band is difficult considering that it is necessary to memorize the actions and the music, and
becomes the best they can be. It has been said over and over again that there is no “I” in team. This certainly rings true in the guard. Everyone wants to help each other out if they can. Teamwork is very important skill to have to be a successful person, being a member of winter guard teaches that skill.
Military life is like civilian life in many ways. For the most part you still work a regular job, you have to keep your life, housing, bills, car and other things in order. You will have a boss, work with other people, and have to exhibit initiative if you want to get ahead in your job.
Marching bands became extensively throughout the nineteenth century due to the surplus drums and brass instruments formerly used by the military after the civil war, especially amongst black and Creole musicians. Thus, the syncopated polyrhythm of African music was mixed with traditional marching music and other popular musical styles, and became...
The military was built on long standing values and customs and courtesies such as saluting, being willing to die for your country, professionalism, and respecting the uniform that you wear by wearing it proudly. All service members are proud of their uniform and what it stands for, but many people don’t know what a uniform is. Oxford Dictionary defines uniform as something that is not changing in form or character; remaining the same in all cases and at all times. Synonyms of uniform are unchanging and constant. If we have a line up of military members in uniform under this n...
In addition, another reason why the use of uniform is favorable is that they decrease the number of incidents of students being attacked for items of clothing such as shoes and sweaters. Besides that, students wearing expensive or fashionable clothes are exposed victims of theft because of envies. Thus, it may also help reduce the amount of theft that may occur. Furthermore, members of gangs usually have a specific color or style of clothing used to differentiate themselves from one another, and by imposing the use of uniform, it will help avoid the social conflicts between
