"A vulnerable person is one who is not afraid of failing or sharing those failures with others. Vulnerable people realize they learn more from times of failure than success." A characteristic that many may look down on, however, a trait that one can be respected for nevertheless. Characteristics are traits that are unique to every individual and make them who they are; it defines an individual and builds their image whether into a strong or weak person, however, each individual should be respected and valued equally. As unique and special each individual is, everyone has a role model that they look up to. On an impulse to save herself and the others, Yusra and three other strong swimmers jumped into the water and started pulling the boat to safety. This act of courage, perseverance and resilience is the reason why Yusra would be a perfect example of the characteristics that were mentioned previously. Once in Germany, Yusra began training with the swimming club in Berlin with the support of the Olympic Committee. With the support she has been chosen as one of the athletes to compete in the Rio 2016 Olympics with the Refugee Olympic Team. In the article “Swimming for Her Life” by Kristin Lewis the main character Yusra Is a 18 year reefuge who is a olympic swimmer who faces many problems early in life. She and her sister had to flee their country because of terrorists and war. There where not many countries that would allow refugees into their country. So they had to hire a smuggler to get them to germany. While they rode on a boat to greece The motor stopped working so yusra and her sister had to jump in the water and push the boat for three hours. After they got to Greece they had to walk for 25 days to get to germany. Finally they got there and they were very luckie to find a refugee camp. Then when the olympics started they announced that there would be a refugee swim team.

The age of overwhelming strength and stamina governing sports is over, and the age of the mentally tough athlete has arrived. Athletes are no longer the superficial jocks and robots programmed to accomplish one goal, victory. Modern athletes ranging from the high school to professional levels are faced with many pressures and temptations, normally outside the realm of their sport. These pressures can inhibit an athlete’s performance substantially; therefore, the pressures need to be dealt with by psychologists. The effectiveness of sports psychology is demonstrated through the fields many theories, applications, and variety of techniques and procedures.
Due to the nature of sport, athletes will always be faced with the possibility of becoming injured. Empirical research has demonstrated that injury has a psychological impact on athletes (Quinn & Fallon, 1999). Indeed, sports practitioners often witness negative psychological impacts such as depression and in extreme cases suicidal tendencies in the injured athlete (Jevon & Johnston, 2003). Injuries have a dramatic impact upon an athlete’s life (Deutsch, 1985), Crossman (1997) interviewed athletic trainers and established that 47% of respondents believed that every injured athlete suffered psychological trauma. Walker, Thatcher and Lavallee (2007), explain there is a need to advance current knowledge of the way injured athletes psychologically respond, with deeper understanding it would be possible to aid rehabilitation professionals and help the athlete cope better psychologically. Psychological issues have an important role in the athletes ability to recover from injury (Arvinen-Barrow, Penny, Hemmings, & Corr, 2010), understanding how an athlete responds will have multiple practical implications. Ford and Gordon (1997) suggest that if an athlete experiences negative emotions then it will lead to non-complinace of the rehabilitation process. In order to understand athletes psychological responses to injury several frameworks have been suggested. These include the: integrated model of response to sports injury and rehabilitation (Wiese-Bjornstal, Smith, Shaffer, & Morrey, 1998), the Bio-Psychosocial model of sport injury rehabilitation (Brewer, Andersen, & Van Raalte, 2002), the staged-based grief response models (Kubler-Ross, 1969) and the stage model of the return to sport (Taylor & Taylor, 1997).
Young athletes account for about 4 million injuries a year in the U.S. according to an article published in the Los Angeles Times (2010). US Today reported that approximately 1.35 million student athletes’ injuries were severe enough to send them to the hospital emergency department. Athletic injuries range from the simple ankle strains and sprains to more serious injuries such as: fractures, contusions, abrasions, and even concussions. The unexpected injuries can cause great physical and emotional challenges for these student athletes. Besides having to deal with the physical and emotional stresses they must also have to deal with the financial turmoil the injuries triggered. Recovering from sport injuries require more than undergoing rigorous physical rehabilitation. Physical healing which can take months is quite different from the mental and emotional healing which can take years to recover from.
But rather than focusing on the game, he is more concentrated observing the fathers of the young players. While he sees excitement and pride on these men’s faces watching their sons playing, he also perceives frustration and helplessness. Values such as personal responsibility, integrity and respect for one’s self and others are replaced with greed, selfishness and ‘I win-you lose’ mentality. It is sad to think that sport and brilliant sport stars will become emblems of greed and selfishness.
Over the course of an individual’s life there are many traits acquired which are things that contribute to the way he or she interacts with others, overall these traits help with the development of one’s personality. Character traits or qualities make up a person, whether it's their personality or attitude or the way they portray themselves to others. Every person individually possess traits and qualities that not only describe, but define them making every person different. Many of the admirable traits that I possess make me the man that I am today, contributing to my interactions with others and the career path I intend to pursue. Throughout my life, many events have revealed my true character traits which include determination, optimism, and faith.
