Introduction
Jesus, in addition to being identified as the central figure of world’s largest religion, is widely recognized as a historical figure. While historical Jesus scholars do not have any verifiable information about his childhood, Jesus was human, and thus must have been a child. The Gospel of Luke presents a story about the boy Jesus. While it is unlikely that this story holds any historical weight, it does provide an image of Jesus that is relevant and valuable to the Gospel of Luke. In Luke 's story of the "Boy Jesus at the Temple," Jesus simultaneously acknowledges that he is human and divine by demonstrating his loyalties to both his parents and God. According to Joseph Fitzmyer’s commentary in The Anchor Bible, the text appears to serve as a transition because it is “in reality an independent unit, which does not depend on anything that precedes in the infancy narrative and which could be dropped without any great loss to the narrative.” At the same time, there must be some significance in the fact that Luke left the story in while the other canonical Gospels to not have it. Some of the details presented in this passage show readers and expanded view of Luke’s understanding of Jesus’ character. Fitzmyer later proposes that the story is “Luke’s way of getting across to his readers the difficulty of understanding who Jesus is or was.” Jesus, even as a child, had a complex identity that developed in a variety of ways. Perhaps the most transitory verse from this selection is Luke 2:52: “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.” This verse quickly bridges the gap between this story and Jesus’ adult teachings, echoes a similar verse Luke uses before this story (Luke 2:40), and specifically addresses Jesus’ humanness and …show more content…
In verse 41, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus attend the Passover festival. More importantly, they make this “every year” and “as usual,” which demonstrates the family’s consistent observation of Jewish tradition (LK 2:41-42). In the Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, the entry on “Family” examines Jesus’ Greco-Roman world in which “children learned the laws of the covenant and …families celebrated the Sabbath weekly and kept numerous feasts and sacrifices throughout the Jewish year, worshipping at home as well as in public.” With the guidance of his parents, Jesus, like any other twelve-year-old boy, learned to obey Jewish law and practice the traditions. Luke’s chosen age for Jesus, twelve, also plays a significant role in this Jewish context of the story because, “at twelve Jesus would be in terms of the culture of the day beginning to make the transition from childhood to adulthood.” Fitzmyer furthers the importance of Jesus’ age because Luke is “emphasizing the training of the young Jewish male…he is now shown to be one trained in the Torah and its requirements and fulfilling his obligations, even in advance.” Here, Jesus is like any other Jewish boy his age because he receives the same kind of training. The life of Jesus is one that is often discussed and debated among scholars and authors since the time Jesus walked this earth. Gerd Theissen’ s work, Shadow of the Galilean, takes the unique perspective of a grain merchant who has been enlisted by Pilate to find out information on various religious sects and report back to him. After Andreas, the grain merchant’s, first report he is given the task of finding out more about this Jesus who is gaining quite a following. Pilate and the Romans want to know if he is a threat to them. This book follows Andreas as he goes on a journey to find out more about Jesus from various sources for his report to the Romans.
This is when the story transitions to Antipas and Luke exchanging letters and begins the conversation about Jesus and the Christians. The first letter Luke sends to Antipas brings the attention to Jesus Christ and how Antipas should read the narrative of Luke. This is when the author lets us know how the gospel of Luke was introduced to Antipas and his experience with Jesus Christ. The majority of the book is the letters being send back and forth between Luke and Antipas; talking about the subject of Jesus Christ and the Christians. In one letter, Luke tells Antipas that the Christians believe this Jesus to be the, “Jewish messiah, or Christ, and the human incarnation of the most high God (p.37).” The author wants us to know What Jesus was known as to the Christians at this time and how important he was to the community. However, Antipas wrote back to Luke asking him if he felt uncomfortable with his association with the Christians. During this time, Christians were looked at as rebellions to the emperor of Rome and how they worshiped a different God. The book of Luke, found after the books Matthew and Mark, focuses on the ministry of Jesus Christ but it also gives us a look into His birth and growth in totality. In this chapter we see a historical account of some of the journeys that Christ experienced. It is important to keep in mind that the Bible and all of its books do serve as historical accounts but each book is unique in the fact that they incorporate a theological timeline. The Bible is, conceivably, the most important book that has ever been written. It gives the world eyewitness accounts to historical events that helped not only shaped a region of the world but the whole entire world. It is nearly impossible to go through some formal societal education and have never once read a part of the bible or have heard a story that adapts from the stories within the bible. The bible has helped formed institutions, associations and so much more. By reading the Gospel of Luke we are truly reading what is meant for us to read as Christians. The principal plot in the book of Luke is the life of Jesus Christ, his sacrifice, His ability to beat death and remain perfect as the son of GOD despite being human as well. Jesus is seen as the perfect savior for humans in the book of Luke. Luke not only gives multiple examples of the power of Jesus but also it gives us a look at The Lord’s triumph over temptation. Luke also depicts Jesus as a man/GOD who had a very deep concentration on people and relationships. The book of Luke gives Jesus a loving characteristic but doesn’t shy away from showing that at times Jesus got angry too. This paper is written to discuss the many different ideas that have been discussed over the first half of Theology 104. This class went over many topics which gave me a much better understanding of Christianity, Jesus, and the Bible. I will be addressing two topics of which I feel are very important to Christianity. First, I will be focusing on the question did Jesus claim to be God? This is one of the biggest challenges of the Bibles that come up quite often. Secondly, I will focus on character development.
The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the origin of nearly everything the Christian Church teaches about Jesus. The Gospels, in turn, serve as the scale or test of truth and authenticity of everything the church teaches about Jesus. It is said that the Gospels are the link between Jesus of Nazareth and the people of every age throughout history who have claimed to be his followers. Although the Gospels teach us about Jesus’ life they may not provide concrete evidence that what they speak of is true there are several other sources.

The Bible is a large and rather confusing book of laws, parables and true stories. The most important story in the Bible, in the story of Jesus ' birth. These two passages which tell of Jesus ' birth are, especially because Christians, at least the majority of them, base their beliefs on it, along with his death. Matthew and Luke are the only two books out of the sixty-six in the bible which give detailed descriptions of the monumental event. There is the main idea in American culture that the Birth story is clear, that there are not any issues between Matthew and Luke 's stories. The story of historical Jesus is not an easy story to tell. There is very little evidence for historians to go by and no sources that are from the actual time of Jesus. Years after his death there were attempts to document what Jesus had said and done during his life and the preaching’s he taught (Fisher, 2008, p. 295). We know Jesus was born during the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus. Historians believe that Jesus was born and grew up in a village called Nazareth, even though the Gospel states he was born in Bethlehem (From Jesus to Christ, 1998). Nazareth was located in Galilee, which was ruled by Rome at the time (Fisher, 2008, p. 299). Sepphoris was a major city, located near Nazareth, which had great Roman and Greek culture. Recent excavations of Sepphoris tell scholars that it was a sophisticated environment. It is believed that Jesus may have had a more mainstream up bringing then being a “humble carpenter” from a low social status, or peasant, like the Bible states. Since there is so little evidence of Jesus there are conflicting theories about who Jesus actually was and how he was raised. Some historians believe that Jesus was part of the artisan class and worked in the city of Sepphoris. They also believe he was tri-lingual, speaking Aramaic, Hebrew, and Hellenistic Greek, so he could do business in the city of Sepphoris and his ministry work (From Jesus to Christ, 1998). It is also known that Jesus was Jewish and was a preacher of the Jewish texts. One of the main characteristics of the gospel of Mark is it’s length. Mark is much shorter than Matthew and Luke, but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. The author of Mark does not slow down the gospel story and makes sure that only important and relevant details are included. When Mark is compared to Matthew and Luke, it becomes obvious to see what Mark has eliminated. The author’s omission of Jesus’ birth, lineage, resurrection, and ascension denotes careful planning and purpose in the gospel of Mark.
The really crazy thing though, is that Jesus always wanted to be a servant to the human race, he was the son of man, and in the biblical sense, son is a lower status than father.
Jesus, a name known by billions throughout the world. To each, this name means something different; savior, friend, philosopher, prophet, teacher, fraud, fake, liar. Some even believe that He is just an imaginary character from the minds of those who wrote about Him. The Westminster Dictionary of Theology describes apologetics as, "Defense, by argument, of Christian belief against external criticism or against other worldly views" (Apologetics 31-32). Though there are still many mysteries that surround the ongoing debate about Christianity, evidence can now prove some of what Christians took by faith before. Now, more than ever, there is information to prove the existence of this man that walked the earth more than two thousand years ago. Little remains of His life and works except for that which is contained within the pages of the Holy Bible. Throughout the past century alone, there have been numerous discoveries, both scientific and archeological; to further prove the existence of a man called Jesus and reinforce the Bible as a legitimate historical document. The validity of Christianity and Jesus Christ himself has been the center of religious controversy for centuries. Though His identity has not and probably never will be proven, He did exist. This paper will use apologetics to prove this so. Sufficient evidence proves the existence of Jesus and forms a firm basis for Christianity.

The New Testament teaches about who Jesus is and what he did on the earth. John wrote the last of the four gospels which recount Jesus’ life and what is to come. The gospel of John is somewhat different from the other three gospels, in that it is more symbolic and less concrete.
