The Lost Letter of Pergamum is a series of letters from Antipas, Calpurnius, and Luke. Throughout of the book, both Antipas and Luke exchange letters back and forth about the teachings of Jesus Christ through the narratives and eyes of Luke. Antipas begins to grow interest in Luke when he first brings up his narratives of Jesus Christ and how much of an impact he made on the Jewish/Christian community. Luke encourages Antipas to attend meetings with Christians in Pergamum and others in nearby cities. After to going to these meetings, we realize that Antipas begins to change his mind about these local Christians and Jesus. In the author’s preface he states, “My hope is that readers of this narrative will not only enjoy the story line for its own sake, but will also profit a better appreciation of the historical context of the early Christian writings and, thereby, develop sharper instincts for understanding the writings of the New Testament in their contexts (p.10).” The author wants the reader to understand how the word of Jesus was spread throughout the city of Rome and how it impacted people during the New Testament. This is when the story transitions to Antipas and Luke exchanging letters and begins the conversation about Jesus and the Christians. The first letter Luke sends to Antipas brings the attention to Jesus Christ and how Antipas should read the narrative of Luke. This is when the author lets us know how the gospel of Luke was introduced to Antipas and his experience with Jesus Christ. The majority of the book is the letters being send back and forth between Luke and Antipas; talking about the subject of Jesus Christ and the Christians. In one letter, Luke tells Antipas that the Christians believe this Jesus to be the, “Jewish messiah, or Christ, and the human incarnation of the most high God (p.37).” The author wants us to know What Jesus was known as to the Christians at this time and how important he was to the community. However, Antipas wrote back to Luke asking him if he felt uncomfortable with his association with the Christians. During this time, Christians were looked at as rebellions to the emperor of Rome and how they worshiped a different God. Luke replies by accusing their emperor of being more concerned about his own well-being than the welfare of
Andreas then heads to Chuza’s house where he discovers that Chuza’s wife has become a follower of Jesus. She expresses to Andreas how peaceful and loving Jesus teachings are. Andreas figures that Jesus is not a direct risk to the Romans, but his teachings on the Kingdom of God do express a destruction or ending to the Roman’s oppression of the Jews. Andreas decides to send a report to the Romans that Jesus is an itinerant philosopher and poet who holds similar views to Greek traditions of loving God and one another.

Barabbas is Andreas’ friend, so he decides to propose ways of rebellion to the Romans. Pilate decides to have a meeting with Andreas about his proposal leads. Pilate manipulates Andreas’s proposal by giving the people of Jerusalem the decision which criminal to keep from execution: Barabbas or Jesus. In the end the people chose Barabbas which meant Jesus, including two other criminals, was sent to be crucified. The story concludes with Andreas recognizing Jesus’ power after so many of the people in his life have been changed by Jesus.

Antipas is a civic leader of Rome and Luke is the writer of the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. This book was written to give the modern reader a glimpse into the context of Christianity and the first century church. Longnecker conveys the life of Christ through the letters and the effects of his life on the culture. Throughout the book we see clear differences between the Roman Empire and Christianity and by the end of the letters we witness Antipas go through a dramatic change in heart and character.
The book of Luke, found after the books Matthew and Mark, focuses on the ministry of Jesus Christ but it also gives us a look into His birth and growth in totality. In this chapter we see a historical account of some of the journeys that Christ experienced. It is important to keep in mind that the Bible and all of its books do serve as historical accounts but each book is unique in the fact that they incorporate a theological timeline. The Bible is, conceivably, the most important book that has ever been written. It gives the world eyewitness accounts to historical events that helped not only shaped a region of the world but the whole entire world. It is nearly impossible to go through some formal societal education and have never once read a part of the bible or have heard a story that adapts from the stories within the bible. The bible has helped formed institutions, associations and so much more. By reading the Gospel of Luke we are truly reading what is meant for us to read as Christians. The principal plot in the book of Luke is the life of Jesus Christ, his sacrifice, His ability to beat death and remain perfect as the son of GOD despite being human as well. Jesus is seen as the perfect savior for humans in the book of Luke. Luke not only gives multiple examples of the power of Jesus but also it gives us a look at The Lord’s triumph over temptation. Luke also depicts Jesus as a man/GOD who had a very deep concentration on people and relationships. The book of Luke gives Jesus a loving characteristic but doesn’t shy away from showing that at times Jesus got angry too. In conclusion, this book was intriguing. It gives historical context and shows what the Roman Empire was like. It also demonstrates Christianity in a new way. The transformation of Antipas is, however, the most intriguing part of the book: a noble man of Rome who became a Christian and gave his life to save another. This book offers an intriguing story to a man mentioned once in John’s Revelation.
Luke Timothy Johnson uses Prophetic Jesus, Prophetic Church in order to make a strong point that when studying both Luke and Acts as a unit, rather than reading the canonical order in the Bible, gives us one of our best prophetic looks at the Church for all ages. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls has been hailed by people of many religious and cultural backgrounds as the greatest discovery of manuscripts to be made available to modern scholars in our time and has dramatically altered our understanding of the origins of Christianity. One of the main characteristics of the gospel of Mark is it’s length. Mark is much shorter than Matthew and Luke, but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. The author of Mark does not slow down the gospel story and makes sure that only important and relevant details are included. When Mark is compared with Matthew and Luke, it becomes obvious to see what Mark has eliminated.
