For project 3, One Bar, my largest painting to date, and a continuation of my cell phones in historical paintings, I used a previously used canvas. I sanded the previous work until smooth, and primed it with oil primer. Sketched out a cropped image of Gericult’s Raft of the Medusa, it has been in my mind for a couple years to do this painting with the survivors holding cell phones instead of pieces of cloth and trying to get reception from a distant cell tower instead of a rescue ship.
The elements that I focused this work on were composition and color, and texture. I cropped the original Raft of the Medusa, in a manner to give a triangle shape with a line of 3 cell phones pointed obliquely towards the summit of people on the raft. I played
with the colors, not wanting such a low key palette, and made the colors more brilliant, especially the water. In doing such a large piece, I took the opportunity to use larger brushes and used more paint, this allowed some texture to show that had not been in my previous work. I was of coarse influenced by Gericult, but also indirectly by John Singer Sargent’s style of a looser brush stroke. In looking at the website Artsy, I came across George Morton-Clark, Morton-Clark has incorporated cellphones as a main component of his work, I was not influenced so much by Morton-Clark’s style, but content. The strength that I am most proud of at the point in painting is the proportions and rendering of the figures in my work. The weakness in this piece is the lower, yellow part of the sky is a bit too bright for the rest of the image.
Ron Mueck has a particular unique set of skills from the commercial world that he can apply to his art. The amount of surface detail Ron uses in his work brings the audience closer and personal to their feelings of emotions. This is achieved by the detail that he displays with scarps or cuts, the vein’s on a hand which causes the spectator to be mesmerized by the art. When you stare at his art for a long period of time, you will then begin to understand the beauty accompanied with the elegance of his style. Playing with scale, sets the audience up for an experience of an emotional shock that will mentally disrupt our understanding. Making a life size scale of someone or something seems to boring for Ron. The technique Ron uses is interesting in the sense that he creates these mannequins that are extremely hyperrealistic that when you are in the presence of one of them, you may believe that they are alive. Even know they could stand anywhere from 1 to 8 feet high.
Examining the formal qualities of Thomas Birch’s painting An American Ship in Distress was very interesting. This paper will analyze and illustrate what I saw in this particular piece of artwork. We walked and walked looking at each art piece, which were all well displayed. Then as I looked at the back wall, a large oil canvas painting looked right back at me. I could feel its pain and so then, I decided to do my paper on this piece. The painting was The Ragpicker by Manet. (The Ragpicker. Edouard Manet.1865.Oil on canvas.) One idea to keep in mind is the inspiration behind Vox Balaenae. Crumb was ispired to write ?Voice of the Whale? after hearing the sounds of whales singing underwater. Vox Blanaenae represents sounds of nature , rather than therfor I feel that I believe that an analysis of Vox Balaenae should be done from a greater distance with less complex analytical tools. The piece is an overview of the begining of time through the end of time. Crumb makes this very clear by naming each of the variations after archeologial periods of time, Each movement represents a step in the evolutionary process , therfor the musical evolution should be observed and listened to in a similar manner. Crumb very appropiatly chose the form of theme and variation to bring the evolution of nature to music. Theme and variation requires that a theme , such as the Sea Theme , must pass on some element of itself to its variations. This mirrors the idea that at the begining of time there was one single ?thing? , and everything else flowed from it. This was Crumb?s goal, and if you listen to the piece , he achieves it. The observation of the Sea Theme and the first two variations provides excellent examples of what Crumb was doing. There are several important aspects of Vox Balaenae that makes it very cohesive and effective.
This piece is acrylic, oilstick, and spray paint on wood panel that is 186.1 centimeters in height and 125.1 centimeters in width. This piece features a human-like figure in the center that is mostly half red and half black. This figure has a gray head with one yellow eye and one light gray eye and above its head is a black halo. The background consists of patches of various colors such as light blue, black, dark red, light green, beige, turquoise, pink, and yellow. On the bottle left corner there is a figure drawn that looks like a fish and has a strip of mustard yellow painted through it. Also towards the bottom right of the artwork, there is some drawn on letters that almost look like words but are messily painted over with a desert sand color. This piece is my favorite because I find it aesthetically pleasing. There is a lot going on in this piece that makes looking at it genuinely interesting. The colors that Basquiat choses for the background go very well together and overall compliment the figure in the center. I like how incredibly expressive this piece is and it makes me want to buy a canvas and start painting that I desire. I also like how the human-like figure is drawn. One could see what looks like an outlined ribcage on the figure, which makes me believe that the head is actually a skull. Upon further research I learned that Basquiat was
For as long as I can remember, there has been a woman, who goes by Medusa. She is from Athens, Greece. Medusa obeyed all the Greek gods & goddess, all except the goddess of wisdom, which is my official title. I am Athena, goddess of wisdom. Medusa is established as woman who is all about herself. Throughout my tale you will understand why they conceive this opinion.
The first painting analyzed was North Country Idyll by Arthur Bowen Davis. The focal point was the white naked woman. The white was used to bring her out and focus on the four actual colored males surrounding her. The woman appears to be blowing a kiss. There is use of stumato along with atmospheric perspective. There is excellent use of color for the setting. It is almost a life like painting. This painting has smooth brush strokes. The sailing ship is the focal point because of the bright blue with extravagant large sails. The painting is a dry textured flat paint. The painting is evenly balanced. When I look at this painting, it reminds me of settlers coming to a new world that is be founded by its beauty. It seems as if they swam from the ship.

Color is used by the use of a bright color, such as pink, and by using darker tints of green and blue to make the viewer focus on the pink body surrounding the island. At first glance the first thing you see is the pink. The artist uses this technique to focus on the theme of how beautiful the space can look when taken care of correctly. Space is also a well constructed element, as the island seems very close, while because of the distance the trees and surrounding buildings feel further away. The three principles of design that are incorporated in the piece are balance, scale, and emphasis and focal point. The piece is balanced as the island and its surrounding takes up a big part of the space in person, the picture contains parts that are much smaller in comparison. The pink color provides an emphasis to the piece. The focal point of the piece is the islands, the artists use the pink surrounding to guide you to focus on the islands themselves. I personally like the stick figures, remnants of prehistoric art, drops of written language, though I would have chosen stick figures missing body parts (half-bodies) to represent “a half”. Not to mention, Sol Lewitt’s instructions nearly split my brain with its daedal maneuvers. As a side note, I have yet to figure out what those almost symmetrical vine like structures represent or mean in your experiment, but I still thank you for providing such a unique, thought-provoking experiment for this week’s workshop.
Slithering serpents protruding from the skull of a yellow fanged, corpse like figure with, “looks that could kill.” When these words are heard, the mythological being Medusa is among one of the first things that comes to mind. Throughout the ages Medusa's story has been passed down from generation to generation and spread through means of media and literature. In the poem, “Medusa”, by Carol Ann Duffy, the author depicts a woman undergoing changes due to her uneasiness for her lovers wavering loyalty. The character, or speaker, has a suspicion that her lover, whom she holds close, has betrayed her. The woman represents a subsequent change in one's state portraying a monster, victim, or even a villainous figure as an effect that fears establish consequent to one's well being and state of mind from betrayal resulting in jealousy.
