Communication with others is something we perform on a daily basis in today’s society. People talk to form and grow social bonds and to increase the likelihood of understanding one another. How we use language often signals to people their importance to us. As men and women, our identities are constantly shaped and refined by the type’s conversations we have. Our values are evident in the conversations with our family, community, society, country and church. In addition, through our profession we are continually refined by the people we talk with. Sharing information makes life more manageable, talking helps to grow social bonds with others, and choosing what we talk about allows us to manage how others perceive us. A common idea is that males, as the dominant sex, are more likely to communicate in a more aggressive fashion when advocating for themselves when it comes to a promotion, raise or opportunity. Masculine people expect competition in social and professional relationships and work to avoid communicating weaknesses and vulnerability. They avoid communication personal and emotions concerns. Masculine-type people also tend to communicate affect by including their friends in concrete activities and exchanging favors. Therefore we can conclude from the above research that the common idea persists that masculine-type people tend to communicate with each other, shoulder to shoulder, in a more direct way than women. Although, men do stand to lose the communication comparison with women in regards to a widespread conviction that women have superior verbal skills. This is supported by the fact that “Men on average, use 7000 communication signals per day and women use 21,000” (Giles, 2014, p.1). These general gender communication differences affect all men and women in every context. It is widely known that men often express themselves to fix a problem, converse for competition, and talk to resolve problems. When considering basic matters in language, such as in meaning and communication, this is the most fundamental component of arguments, even more fundamental than propositions, inferences, and conclusions. We cannot make sense of an argument without being able make sense of the language, meaning, and purpose of what is being communicated in the first place. Communicating occurs when we use language to cause or prevent an action. Also, language may be used to communicate feelings and emotions. Such expressions may or may not be intended to evoke reactions in others, but when emotional language occurs in an argument the purpose is to evoke similar feelings in others in order to sway them to agreeing with the argument’s conclusion. In her article “But What Do You Mean” Deborah Tannen, claims that there is a huge difference in the style of communicating between men and women. Tannen breaks these down into seven different categories; apologies, criticism, thank-yous, fighting, praise, complaints, and jokes. With each of these she compares men to women by explaining the common misconceptions that each of the genders do. The different style of communication can cause some problems at the workplace and even affect the environment. Why is it so important to understand the differences between men and women’s communication? Being able to understand and identify the differences between men and women’s communication will help initiate and maintain healthy relationships. For example, men and women have different ideas of what is an “effective” first impression. Women tended to use “appearance enhancing strategies” to attract attention; men rated theses attempts as most effective (Frisbee, Dillow, Gaughan, & Norlund, 2009). However, men also used “appearance enhancing strategies” (Toma & Hancock, 2009) but women rated “using resource enhancing tactics or dominance over the competition” as most effective (Frisbee, Dillow, Gaughan, & Norlund, 2009).

Through our research, we found that in a male dominated society, adapt to the male styles of communication. As we have previously stated, the styles of communication between genders differ greatly. Men tend to use conversation to obtain data whereas women use conversation to create connections. Through our research, we also came up with some solutions for bridging the communication gaps between males and females. To reduce miscommunication, males and females must learn to interpret the messages being sent to them. They must learn to understand the speakers' motives and background. In effective communication, one must realize the experiences of the speaker and listener, and work to create a common understanding of the messages being created. Males should try to understand the female need for connection whereas females need to understand the male need for data. If the two cultures can learn to combine their styles by offering information while creating a connection, the male and female communication gap will be bridged.

Communication is the process of conveying information to each another using words, actions, or by writing the information down to be read by another person. A lot of attention has been dedicated to the thought that women and men communicate very differently from one another. In this paper I am going to discuss the gender differences in communications between the opposite sexes. Many believe that gender plays a major role in communication but in all reality, that isn’t the case. Several factors play a part in how someone communicates with another person regardless of their sex. On a daily basis, we come in contact with individuals that we have to communicate with, wither it be for work purposes, educational purposes, or social practices. As active humans we cannot escape the idea of socializing or communication, therefor; we make it a daily routine who we communicate with, how we communicate with them, what we listen to and how we listen it. With this routine habits are formed, some are strengths but others are weaknesses that diminish the communication quality. It is extremely important for individuals to recognize these strengths and weakness within their communication routine. Men and women are more different than one can imagine. Though the main difference is in physical appearance, another difference is their sense of communication. Women appear to talk more than males, but like to keep their conversations more private. Males, on the other hand, will talk less, but do not mind their conversations being more public. This is just one of many examples of men and women being completely opposite of one another in terms of communication. Each gender has their own expectations of the opposite. These expectations are not usually met due to communication differences, which leads to criticisms such as, “Men do not listen” or “Women will never understand” to form. Women have an interpersonal and warm style of communication that involves a sympathetic and emotional feel in their conversations (Goman), which men can misunderstand or misinterpret. When men communicate verbally, they are a lot blunter than women are and they say exactly what they mean.
