Are you a person that likes excitement, and watching people do amazing things with a round ball that you can hold in your hands? Or, are you someone that likes to watch all the fortunes and misfortunes that can happen in a round of golf? Have you heard the great names of Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan? These men are said to be people who changed the sport they played in for all time. Both of these men are great athletes and they were very dedicated players. I am comparing these two because it’s amazing the different things you can accomplish in two completely different sports. Also, these players broke records and gained achievements that had either never been done, or very few people had accomplished in the sport. The difference in the two sports that the athletes played (basketball and golf) is quite a big one. In basketball, the object of the game is if you are on offense you want to put the ball into the round hoop while you are being guarded by opposing players and you have a boundary you have to stay in. If you are on defense, you want to prevent the offense from scoring into the hoop and if a shot is made, you throw the ball from out of bounds and then you are on offense. In golf, you are not on a team you are playing for your own …show more content…
Michael was pretty much a Tiger, just playing a different sport. The thing about Michael is unique though, he wasn’t always a guy who could run circles around everybody, in fact Michael was cut from his high school varsity team. The thing different about Michael though from other people is he was so determined the next year in high school to blow everyone away, he did so much work that the next year he was the best on the team. Then, Michael went to college just one year before he entered the NBA draft. He was selected by the Bulls and he went through his NBA career dominating, because he just had the will and determination that he wanted to beat everyone on the court that he put tons and tons of work
He was also selected to be an NBA all-star as he averaged 30 to 40 points per game. While when it came to Michael’s second year in the NBA he broke his foot early in the season and was forced to sit out. While having his year off from the game, he decided to go back to school to finish his final year of college. His 3rd year wasn’t all so great either as the Bulls had another losing season, but they still made it to the playoffs. Michael would also score 63 points to set an NBA playoffs record. As the 1989 season approached the Bulls had plenty of players to help Michael on the court. The Bulls would lose in the second round of the playoffs, though to an eastern powerhouse in the Detroit Pistons. As for the next three seasons, the Bulls would lose to the Pistons in the playoffs. The pistons had a great plan to keep Michael from being a terror on the court by something called the “Jordan Rules.” The Jordan Rules invented by the Pistons meant to rough him up or play him tough. Michael was pushed around by the Pistons because he wasn’t very hefty. While in the 1991 and 92 season the Bulls blew by the league not even the Pistons could stop them as the Bulls would go back to back beating the Suns and the Trail Blazers. While in between the two seasons Michael and many other star NBA players took place in the 1992 Olympics the team later became known as the NBA Dream Team. There was no chance of anyone
When Michael arrived to Unc he was nervous and excited. Everyone on the team was a high school star. Michael had an advantage he knew the team's offense because the high school he attended Laney High used the exact same offense as them. The first few week Michael played good till he twisted his ankle and was out for 2 weeks. Michael made it as a starter for his team. He was very nervous and excited. At the start of the game Jordan shot a jumper and he missed it but the butterflies in his stomach went away. Michael scored 12 points in there win. Throughout his career in college he averaged 17.7 points per game 1.8 assist 2 rebounds and he shot 54 percent.
Most players that enter the NBA draft early are 19 or 20 years-old. They are going to end up playing against 25-year-olds that are stronger, faster, and that have had more experience than they have. Along with more experience, they will not be as physically fit because one or two years of college will not do it, and high school will not do it. For example, Lebron James. He is considered one of the best to have played the game, and he went straight out of high school. Imagine if he had gone to college, he would be so much better. So if they leave after the freshman or sophomore year, they will be about five or six years behind and that will make it harder to get a spot on the bench. If they do not make it to the bench, then they will be in the D league for 2 or 3 years to help develop their skills. “The D-League uses a tiered compensation system that's based on experience. Players with ample NBA
To Michael playing basketball in the NBA “seemed something of a distant dream'; (Halberstam 20), but even after he was cut from the varsity team Michael still practiced every day. Michael’s practice paid off in his junior and senior years when he was the best player on the varsity team. After high school Michael was off to the University of North Carolina where for three years he would have some amazing accomplishments in basketball.
Like Muhammad Ali is to boxing and Michael Jordan is to basketball, Tiger Woods is considered by many to be the greatest golfer of all time. Due to his incredible playing on the course, his young age, and the endorsement deals he signed with major advertising companies, Tiger Woods’ fans place him on the “best of the best” list in professional sports. Society places an enormous amount of responsibilities on its champions or favorites. “ Sure, he is good on the course, but how well does he support society? What does he stand for”, the public says. There is more to Tiger Woods than a good golf swing or how well he can say “ Buy these shoes” in front of the advertisers’ cameras. Even though Tiger would never say it, his influence over the game of golf and society as a whole far outreaches the twenty-six years he spent on the planet so far.
Throughout the history of golf there have been many players that carry a sense of dominance, but none greater than Tiger Woods. His competitiveness and the way he strives for excellence is one of the main reasons Tiger is beyond talented. Woods has the most decorative career resume along with being the face of a multi-billion-dollar company Nike. He has gone through lots of ups and downs in his career. Although his career is filled with incredible accolades. Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer of all time, and the first billionaire sportsman, but he also struggles with his actions off the course.
Since the advent of the professional sports world, athletes have been praised for their extraordinary abilities and outstanding character. Those who receive the rare opportunity to play sports professionally are admired and leave people inspired all across the world. Arthur Ashe is one whose work ethic, passion and trailblazing career in the tennis league has inspired many. Ashe’s career in the sports world not only influenced many to follow in his footsteps but his character has impacted millions of people to this day.
Michael Jeffrey Jordan is known all over the world today as the greatest basketball player ever and the best sneaker designer. When he was a young boy nobody would ever have guessed what he would become. Michael did not dream of being a professional ballplayer. He just wanted to be the best player in the park. He eventually had good coaches who led him to be a great player in high school and college, which led to his unbelievable success in professional basketball.. Later Michael would play as a pro in baseball, too. It was a brief change of sport, and he soon concluded that his future was in one area only - basketball. He even led the United States Olympics basketball team to success more than once. There were a lot of great players before him, but Michael Jordan would go farther than any of them. Even though
Golf is a very physical sport. You use 17 muscle groups in the swing of a golf club. Sports require coordinated muscle use and using 17 groups of muscles takes coordination. Golf also can burn lots of calories. If you play a nine-hole course without a golf cart and no catty (someone who carries clubs for you), you walk 2-2.5 miles and you burn 721 calories. Professionals play in a four day tournament where they play 18 holes each day. After the tournament, they would be burning around 5,000 calories in total. This
Golf is different than any other sport I’ve ever played. Golf challenges the body, mind, and soul. The average person doesn’t think a lot about golf, or thinks that it is not a challenging sport. Once they have played it is a different story. Golfing is not just taking a swing at the ball, it involves several tedious techniques and strategies such as; making sure you are aimed where you want the ball to go, your hands are in the right spot on your clubs, your knees are slightly bent, etc. In the book “The Mind at Work” a member of the UCLA Graduate school of education and Information Studies, Mike Rose, states “With time and practice, all this becomes routine, automatic.” We are asked to compare Rose’s work with intelligence that we as students have acquired through our lives thus far. Something that I have worked for and learned about since I was young is golf. I
Michael Jordan is a former professional basketball player, who played for the Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards for 15 seasons. He has an amazing record of winning 6 NBA Championship titles, 5-time NBA Most Valuable Player, 6-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player, 14-time NBA All Star and much more. Because of him, Chicago Bulls went from one of the weakest teams in the league, to a six-time championship winning team. Not only was he a great athlete but also he had great sportsmanship and was seen to be a role model to millions of people. “Jordan can certainly be considered a sports hero.” (Ayemang, 2012, p.2) Michael Jordan exemplifies how athletes should have the drive and dedication like him in order to accomplish something great and
Golf has gone down a long road to get to the widely popular sport it is today. Golf is a sport where the player uses a long shafted club to propel a small, hard ball around a large area of land known as a course, using as little strokes as possible. Par is the number of strokes a first-class player should normally require for a particular hole or course. There are many different parts to a golf swing such as: grip, stance, swing, and position. There are two basic golf clubs: irons and woods. Golf became a pastime in Great Britain in the 17th century and spread to all around the World. King James II’s Act of parliament banning golf from Scotland because it was a distraction to archery lessons and military training, was the first written evidence that golf ever existed. People still played golf at the time, even though it was
"Every day on the golf course is about making little adjustments, taking what you've got on that day and finding the way to deal with it." - Tiger Woods. Not only does this quote relate to Golf, but it can be related to what Tiger stands for as an individual. Tiger, even at a young age was treated as one of the best golfers ever to have lived. He was beating professionals such as John Daly at the age of 13 years old. Also at that young age he was being recruited by many high level colleges, including Stanford, University of Las Vegas or UNLV, and Washington University. College was only a small step for Tiger, he had his mind on a bigger goal. Becoming the best golfer to ever walk the earth. Although not everything was easy for Tiger. Tiger faced difficulties like racist remarks,a lack of money, and a lot of sructinity. These were just small pebbles on a dirt road. Tiger knew in order to be the best golfer in the world he would have to take it one step at a time, or as he would say one shot at a time.
The greatest athletes are not only determined toward their goal but they also have a reason to do what they do.They have a purpose that drives them to overcome any obstacle life sets them.Michael Jordan,Muhammad Ali and Buster Douglas are archetypes of successful athletes due to the fact that they had a purpose that was greater than themselves. They are destined to succeed at any price because their why is greater than any setback.
Michael Jordan is good at the game because he practiced hard to get where he is now. He is dedicated to the game just like any other person that loves the game. That’s also how he got so good at basketball, he worked on his shooting, dribbling, and his defense, rebounds.
