Golf is different than any other sport I’ve ever played. Golf challenges the body, mind, and soul. The average person doesn’t think a lot about golf, or thinks that it is not a challenging sport. Once they have played it is a different story. Golfing is not just taking a swing at the ball, it involves several tedious techniques and strategies such as; making sure you are aimed where you want the ball to go, your hands are in the right spot on your clubs, your knees are slightly bent, etc. In the book “The Mind at Work” a member of the UCLA Graduate school of education and Information Studies, Mike Rose, states “With time and practice, all this becomes routine, automatic.” We are asked to compare Rose’s work with intelligence that we as students have acquired through our lives thus far. Something that I have worked for and learned about since I was young is golf. I …show more content…
You work like hell. But you learn a lot.” In my experience, I have learned a lot but the most important thing that I have learned is forgiving myself on the golf course; forgiving myself on the shots I do bad on or have a bad round. I tell myself that I will do better next time. Golf is as big as a mental game as it is a physical game. For example, I was at the biggest golf match of my junior year. I started the first hole off with going straight into the woods; as a result, I had to take a stroke. This patterned seemed to continue throughout the first nine holes. As I was eating lunch in between holes I realized what I was going wrong this whole time. I was thinking about my first hit; however, all I needed to do was forget about it. ……….. In conclusion, I got second place in district continuing to sectionals. Regardless of all the thoughts in my head. Forgetting about them made it a lot easier to enjoy the game and to play a good round. As a golfer, I’m thankful to have gained this quality as a life lesson not just on the golf
Contrary to what most think, an “Arnold Palmer” is not just a blend of tea and lemonade. One day, all might be able to swing a golf club like Arnold Palmer. Golf has been around since the thirteenth century and was introduced by the Scottish and Dutch. The main goal of golf is to reach the hole in the fewest amount of shots possible. One main difference between golf and many other sports is the lower the score the better. Regardless of the fact that the game was once banned, golf is now enjoyed by many (“The History of Golf”). Despite the images in common golf commercials, the golf swing is endlessly complicated.
Due to the nature of the game of golf, self-talk is a major practical psychological component that is beneficial for golfers to use. The average round of golf takes about four hours, but only about two minutes is actually spent swinging the golf club. Thus, there is a substantial amount of time that can be implemented for “inner time”. During a round of golf, golfers give themselves hundreds if not thousands of suggestions using self-talk (King, 2002). This is when a golfer may dig into his or her conscious and subconscious thoughts. In other words it is beneficial for golfers to use self-talk. Instances throughout the golf game in which self-talk may be useful include when a player is walking from hole to hole, approaching the ball, viewing the angle, and post shots. Self-talk in these cases allow the player to think about what he or she may implement or improve on in his or her next shot. In turn, the golfer’s game should improve if positive self-talk techniques are applied to the golf game.
I guess it started when I was about twelve years old. My father took me to this place called a golf course. I did not know why or what we were here for, but I was interested in finding out. We entered a building called a clubhouse; then, he paid for a bucket of practice balls. I followed him to the driving range. Once we got there, he got a metal stick from his golf bag and gave it to me. I grabbed the stick, and he showed me how to hold it. Then, he told me to swing it. I swung it back and forth as careless as I could. He then said, "Son, you have one of the nicest golf swings I have ever seen." I did not even know what I was doing with that stick, but I guess my dad saw something I didn't. My father then decided that he was ready to teach me how to use the three clubs of golf: a putter, iron, and wood. He handed me the putter, and we went to the green. He explained to me that a putter is used on a green to get the ball into the hole. I took a few smooth swings back and forth to get a feel for a putter. He said, "Hit this ball until it goes into the hole." I was impressed with myself because it only took me six hits to get it in the hole. He laid twenty balls on the green, and he told me to hit every ball in with one shot. It took me about three hours, but I accomplished what my dad told me. He thought I was ready to try the next club, so we headed to the next location. We went out onto the fairway, and he handed me an iron. He laid out some more balls on the ground and told me to hit them towards the flag on the green. The first ball I hit did not even get close to the green. The rest of the balls I hit went either over or on the front of the green, but I never let another one fall short. My dad said, "Keep practicing until you hit all of the balls on the green." I kept practicing until all of the balls were laid up around the flag.
Knowing all the rules in golf is a very good trait to have. By learning the rules, you have an advantage against other players when there is a ruling in your favor that will save you a couple strokes. Also, whenever you are involved in a situation in which you know that if you find your lost ball, it will cost you more strokes than if you didn't find it. Having knowledge of the rules is a very distinctive quality to have because it can save yourself many strokes as well as saving your headaches later on.
Imagine the sun bursting through the trees for the first time of the new day, the smell of freshly cut grass still potent to your nose as you tee the ball up for a round of golf in the cool mist of a spring morning. "That is what brings you back every time, the smell of the air, the coolness of the whether and the beautiful surroundings that make every shot enjoyable." (Suess, PI) This is the game of golf in its finest and most exquisite time to many people and many people it has touched in its long history. Throughout this experience I have learned a lot about golf and about how it effects the mind and body. Also learning that golf isn’t just a game that you may lose some weight from, but it can improve so many other things on your body and in your
What do you want to be when you grow up? This is the question asked often by many adults of children and young people. Answers vary across the board for some children dreaming of becoming an astronaut to little girls aspiring to become a veterinarian; however, the overwhelming answer of children is to become a professional athlete. Many kids grow up envisioning themselves as the next Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, or even the next David Beckham or Mia Hamm. But how many times do you hear a child say they want to become the next Tiger Woods? The thought of golfing, especially as a child, puts many to sleep. It is uncommon for a young child to fall in love with the sport of golf. Most people take up golf later in life as a hobby, yet
"Every day on the golf course is about making little adjustments, taking what you've got on that day and finding the way to deal with it." - Tiger Woods. Not only does this quote relate to Golf, but it can be related to what Tiger stands for as an individual. Tiger, even at a young age was treated as one of the best golfers ever to have lived. He was beating professionals such as John Daly at the age of 13 years old. Also at that young age he was being recruited by many high level colleges, including Stanford, University of Las Vegas or UNLV, and Washington University. College was only a small step for Tiger, he had his mind on a bigger goal. Becoming the best golfer to ever walk the earth. Although not everything was easy for Tiger. Tiger faced difficulties like racist remarks,a lack of money, and a lot of sructinity. These were just small pebbles on a dirt road. Tiger knew in order to be the best golfer in the world he would have to take it one step at a time, or as he would say one shot at a time.

This is the reason that the mental game is the toughest part of the sport and the toughest thing to handle throughout all sports. Golf requires a lot of challenging skills. On the website Honest Golfers it says “ that one of the hardest parts of golf is mastering all of the equipment” This is a huge thing in the game of golf because there are 14 clubs in a normal golf bag and you have to know how to use all of the clubs and what they do, also even if you know what every club is used for you still have to know how to use them to your strengths and what you can do. The need to know how to use your equipment is way harder than any other sports equipment. In golf, even though there isnt any running involved, you still have to be in peak physical strength.

In general, a sport is usually some form of physical game or activity performed by two or more people. One such example would be golf, often dubbed the "rich man 's sport" throughout its history. When discussing the impact that different technological advancements in the materials used in golf have had, I 'm mainly looking at how these adjustments have improved performance.
