You will walk away with this knowing how the mind and body is affected by playing a round of golf and the benefits of just playing. Contrary to what most think, an “Arnold Palmer” is not just a blend of tea and lemonade. One day, all might be able to swing a golf club like Arnold Palmer. Golf has been around since the thirteenth century and was introduced by the Scottish and Dutch. The main goal of golf is to reach the hole in the fewest amount of shots possible. One main difference between golf and many other sports is the lower the score the better. Regardless of the fact that the game was once banned, golf is now enjoyed by many (“The History of Golf”). Despite the images in common golf commercials, the golf swing is endlessly complicated.
The game of golf is one of the oldest of today’s modern sports. Its exact beginnings are not known; however, some historians trace golf back to the Stone Age while others claim it originated from the “idle antics of shepherd boys knocking small stones into holes in the ground with a crook while their flocks grazed nearby” (Peper 1). Researched back to the time of the Roman Empire, it is also believed the sports-oriented Romans played a forerunner of the game of golf called paganica. This sport involved the use of a bent stick and a ball stuffed with wool played in the open countryside.
Golf is a very physical sport. You use 17 muscle groups in the swing of a golf club. Sports require coordinated muscle use and using 17 groups of muscles takes coordination. Golf also can burn lots of calories. If you play a nine-hole course without a golf cart and no catty (someone who carries clubs for you), you walk 2-2.5 miles and you burn 721 calories. Professionals play in a four day tournament where they play 18 holes each day. After the tournament, they would be burning around 5,000 calories in total. This
Bowling and Golf both share unique aspects of their individual sport. Bowling is considered an anaerobic activity, while golf is an aerobic activity. In bowling, one usually does not get sweaty or become suddenly out of breath, however, in golf, since one is consistently walking to retrieve their ball to where they the ball landed, both sports have their own purposes of exercising. In addition, in a Chicago Tribune article, Bowling may be a sport, but is it work?, by Marla Krause, interviewed the head coach of a boys' bowling team at New Trier High School in Winnetka, he says,” As exercise, it may not be like running or swimming," Durkin said, "but it takes some leg and upper-body strength to throw hard and hook the ball.” As this course taught

Golf, as Defined by Mark Twain, “is a good walk spoiled”, and too many in this day it is becoming more and more common to be looked at in this way. Golf, beginning around 1996, entered a new era, and that is the one controlled by a sports icon, named Tiger Woods. What used to be a game for elderly gentleman sitting at the country club, playing nine holes a day on a fairly easy golf course, took a whole new shape. Golf became a game of long tee shots and amazingly accurate approach shots, taking the game to a new super low scoring level, that seemed to be only feasible by tour pros, which seem to never miss. With all this change, golf is beginning to lose interest, yet why? Is it because it is too difficult? Not any fun? Or is it just too expensive? Well in all honesty, it may be all of these things and more. Yet, I believe, it is time everyone over looks these hurdles, hops over them, and on to the golf bandwagon, and understand how to enjoy the game, more than ever before.
Imagine the sun bursting through the trees for the first time of the new day, the smell of freshly cut grass still potent to your nose as you tee the ball up for a round of golf in the cool mist of a spring morning. "That is what brings you back every time, the smell of the air, the coolness of the whether and the beautiful surroundings that make every shot enjoyable." (Suess, PI) This is the game of golf in its finest and most exquisite time to many people and many people it has touched in its long history. Golf is a lifestyle and not just games to people that are avid in playing. The game of golf has a history that is rich in technological advances and personal accomplishments, which through time has shown to shape the sport into what it has become today.

Abstract: Society is affected every day by many different kinds of sports. These sports often govern society's way of life. People all over the nation turn their TVs to sporting events, such as golf, during the weekends. Scott Stossel states that "more than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on the weekends." Parents use sports as a teaching tool for their children. Kids learn teamwork and discipline from team sports programs and sports have also helped many students with their grades. Kids who want to compete in school sports are taught to keep their grades up or they won't be able to play, but the greedy coaches and schools often look around grades to keep their "star athletes" in the games. Adults have been affected by sports in their bank accounts. Tax increases for funding a new stadium, golf course and even school programs have hurt the middle class Americans. Sports have taken control of small communities and soon will take control of society

They both depend on the swing of your body; grips of your hands, the strike zone of the ball and both are a mental game. Tennis and golf are also very different in many ways. The types of balls used to play the game, materials used to make the balls and equipment used to hit the balls. Tennis is a team sport and an individual sport. The benefits of sports range from physical, mental, and social. Exercise keeps people fit, develops healthy muscle tone, and reduces heart and lung problems (Oak, Manali). Sports studies have shown that “youth are motivated and engaged in ways that do not happen regularly in any other parts of their lives. Their experience of sports stands out from nearly all other activities, including socializing and schoolwork, in providing enjoyment where they are exerting concerted effort toward a goal” (Larson, Reed, and Sean Seepersad). People who play sports bond over a common interest. This opens up children to meeting new kids and socializing with many more. In Kindergarten, I played baseball. Even though I did not truly understand all the mechanics of the game, I met new friends and began to develop motor skills. This was very useful starting at an early age and pushed me to stay active throughout my life.
